Excellent tutorial! I tried to utilize a similar technique in a graduate school project. This wouldn't work as intended using shape repeater or cc repetile correct?

Yes, It won’t work with repeater or CC RepeTile or similar methods. They all work as a single layer doesn’t matter how much repeaters are used.

Excellent tutorial. There should be a way to duplicate the hexagons quickly, instead of having to do it manually? Have a look at the free version of the software called Cavalry. See if you can achieve such duplicator/fall off effects using AE.. It's a procedural mograph tool, and can do this stuff way better and faster.

I am using After Effects 2023 Version, but this method will work with any version of After Effects.

You can create some UI Elements using this technique. For example, if you hover over a list of UI elements, the list should respond to the mouse interaction. This technique could be useful for this purpose and many other things. I’ll make a few more tutorials related to this technique. :)
