:O I've been playing casually with GIMP for nigh 20 years, and that colored-layer-"mode"-"multiply" trick is something I've never seen before. I knew there were loads of menus I hadn't touched and capabilities I hadn't played with, but that one blows my mind and REALLY opens up options for me. I'm so glad I checked out this tutorial! Great tutorial, how simple just amazed, I added a layer mask onto the colour fill layer erased logo area so now the change of colour automatically fills around the logo :)

Great tutorial Nick! One recomendation for time for anyone who's changing the color of the t-shirt, use alpha to selection on the color layer after cutting out the logo from it then fill it with foreground color, therefore you don't need to keep cutting it out. Keep up the great work 👏👏.

I agree because it's the open-source one-two punch, just like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop...except Inkscape and Gimp is much faster, more optimized, and available everywhere. I'm on Linux so everything is made using open-source tech.

No reflection on Nick, this tut is terrific; and no reflection on GIMP, they created something beyond amazing for FREE! But man, I programmed mainframe computers, taught myself HTML, CSS, PHP, Javascript, and built an app and none of that was as difficult to grasp as creating graphics with GIMP (or any such tool). I believe first, you have to be versed in graphics to know how to do, and what can be done. This is not intuitive.

Hello Nick, thanks for all the great tutorials . They've helped make a big difference in my design skills. I have one little challenge with my GIMP software though. When I choose a color from the color picker, and fill with foreground color it just gives me a shade of grey. No matter which color I try. Please how can I fix this.

Hi Nick, thanks for sharing your wisdom. I was playing around with this tutorial for tshirt mockups, I instead put the colored layer on top of the log and added a layer mask to it by selecting alpha channel of the logo and inverted the selection, then i added the layer mask as selection on the filled color layer. this way i found that you can replace the color (or just duplicate it first) of the filled color layer without having to cut out the cut out the image every time you make a new layer. whats your thought on that?

Not doubting your GIMP wizardry but would it make more sense to change the shirt color first and then add the logo after? EDIT: Nevermind, tried that and it doesn't work lol the punch-out method is necessary EDIT 2: I tried importing a logo onto your blank shirt template, but it kept importing the logos as black and white instead of color. Had to go to Image>Mode and change it from Indexed to RGB. Not sure if that was intentional.

yo nick, i've been trying to make some shirts mockup but when i add the image GIMP turn it to grayscale. this happens only if i import the image over the t-shirt model, if i open it alone the image have the color...what am i missing?

Sounds like your document mode is set to greyscale. Go to Image > Mode and select RGB

Hello. I have a dark t-shirt (png) and a white text (png), I follow your instructions, but when I choose a color (dark blue, let`s say) for the new layer created and fill it, it does fill with dark blue, but when I choose "multiply", nothing changes. I mean, the filled color (dark blue) disappears and the black t-shirt it`s still black. What am I doing wrong? PD: With a white t-shirt works, but when I change the color of the t-shirt to a darker blue, the text looks ugly, with some white lines outside the letters. For light colors works well (even if the white lines are still there, you can see them only if you zoom), but not for dark. Where can be the problem? Thank you!

darken only doesnt effect the logo one bit for me. even after selecting darken only mode, Logo does not look like it is printed on the shirt. what am i missing ?

If its not png then the background of the logo will not be transparent, either cut out the background or choose a transparent png

Is there a way to do this without losing the coloring of the design? On some of mine I lose the white parts of the design when I darken if I am putting it on a colored or gray shirt.

when I click "darken only" my logo disappears, do you know how I can fix that? I still see the yellow frame of the logo but the logo itself is just gone

Perhaps the best option is to use symbol selection and crop the white shirt image, then place it on the top layer and set to multiply.
