There are so many little tips and tricks when it comes to combining products and designing a suitable routine for our skin. Some ingredients like benzoyl peroxide can render some antioxidants useless and other ingredients boost each others potency. This video goes through the best ingredients to combine or avoid mixing, the philosophy of how to target a skin concern and how to achieve the best results.
I've put all of this info together in my blog, www.aniamariemd.com/blog

I absolutely love the detail and how eloquent you are in specifically detailing every single ingredient pairing! By far, the most knowledgeable skincare expert on the Tube! I have a question about salicylic acid and a caveat that you pointed out; that if a product that has BHA is layered over a product which has oil then it will start to break down that oil instead of its fullest intent. I am currently using Is Clinical Youth Intensive Creme which has quite a bit of willowbark but say I layer it over a hydrating, barrier supporting serum which has a few replenishing oils and ceramides, will it start to break that down and render it useless or am I worrying WAY to much about this? LOL
@theocbeautymd
@theocbeautymd 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! You might want to reverse that order especially because if the BHA is traveling into the skin through layers of oil, it might just reduce their efficacy.

Hi Dr. Ania Marie! I appreciate your videos very much. I have a few questions that I am wondering if you can help me with. I have some great products I am using, but not sure if I am using them correctly. My doctor has been a little helpful, but when I ask the nurse for more clarification, she is very unhelpful. I use a clindamycin in the morning after washing with a mild cleanser. I then wait 5 minutes and use Revision Hydrating Serum (hyaluronic acid), then Skinbetter Alto defense serum, Alastin light moisturizer, and lastly Alastin tinted sunscreen. In the evening I remove sunscreen with Albolene and wash face with Revision Papaya salicylic enzyme cleaner. The I use metrocream and wait 5 minutes. Then I use the hyraluronic acid again from Revision, Alastin Restorative Skin Complex, and lastly Alastin’s light moisturizer. Am I layering products correctly? Am I doing anything wrong or should I change anything? I do use an eye cream, too. I forgot to mention that. It goes on after the hyaluronic acid. Please help! Thank you so much!

Thanks for the video. Can you please speak on how much sunscreen to use? I hear conflicting reports about how much to use. Also when I try to use a tinted sunscreen I end up looking cakey. Thank you.

The traditional approach of 1/3 to 1/2 teaspoon isn't exact science in my opinion. I think formulations really vary. My most trusted sunscreen is probably the skinbetter lotion. It is quite tacky on application, which is intentional to ensure more product is applied. It's also dispensed in a pump and it's easy to remember you want 1-1.5 pumps for the face. I've never had a problem with looking cakey after the tinted version. It's one of my favorites.

Thanks for this informative video Dr. Ania Marie. I have been booked for Face Subcision + PRP for my Acne Scarring and the Physician has recommended Alastin Regenerating Skin Nectar and Alastin Sooth + Protect Recovery Balm for recovery. Do you recommend I can use only Nectar and mix it with Cerave Healing Ointment, as both above Alastin Products are extremely pricey here in Toronto. Appreciate your knowledge and help.

yes, you can, absolutely. Just don't mix. Apply nectar first then cerave

I am doing research on Alastin products and just listened to the part about looking for the + sign with spf… for example, the Alastin Hydratint spf 36 says it’s broad spectrum uva / uvb… it shows no + after sunscreen spf 36. It has listed 8.9 Titanium Dioxide and 3.4 Zinc Oxide. It’s tinted so it would have the iron oxides for better protection.., but why would a high end all mineral spf have such low Zinc oxide? Would you consider this a decent Spf ? I work for a derm and i don’t remember our sunscreens having the + on them? I will have to double check. I think I see it more on drugstore brands. Enjoy your videos!,

I do love LOVE some Alastin products but not all. The reason could be the formulation. Maybe it was causing white cast at higher concentration or didn't blend. Who knows. The skinbetter Science sunscreens and Colorescience are my favorites. Colorescience lists pluses and SBS doesn't 🤷‍♀️

Some dermatologists say the idea that dehydrated skin produces more oil is a myth. Is there any scientific data about that? And also, here in europe, we have chemical sunscreens that have very very high uva production (like my anthelios shaka has a ppd of 46) whereas mineral sunscreens have pretty low uva protection in comparison. Do you think it still isn't worth using chemical ones?
@theocbeautymd
@theocbeautymd 2 жыл бұрын
Certainly not everyone with oily skin has dehydrated skin but there are hypotheses that dehydrated oily skin can be malnourished and lack balance. Yes, Europe has much more sophisticated chemical sunscreens because in the US, the FDA has to clear sunscreen products (which is expensive and time consuming). And yes, mineral sunscreens can really be inferior. This is why formulation is key and I am so picky about the sunscreens I use. I do think the Skinbetter Science offer excellent protection but I can not say how they compare to an excellent European chemical sunscreen. That would be a fun experiment to try!

I have been mixing my Altreno lotion with Vanicream moisturizer. Is this not a good idea? Can the tretenoin be affected by this?
@theocbeautymd
@theocbeautymd 2 жыл бұрын
With tretinoin, it is often the desired effect that the moisturizer will decrease the irritation. If you apply it before the vanicream, it will be more potent and irritating.

will using a benzoyl peroxide face wash cancel out ingredients such as antioxidant, vitamin c, nacinamide...etc?

@@wendychang9438 You could consider switching to a salicylic acid wash or you could keep using both but likely the vitamin C activity will be somewhat diminished, not nearly as much as if you were using a get though.

So if a sunscreen does not show a PA+++ it is not adequately protecting me from UVA rays?
@theocbeautymd
@theocbeautymd Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, it's hard to know. For example, skinbetter science does protect from UVA but does't print their rating on their products. I love it when companies state it on each product, like colorescience. When in doubt, assume you get little to no UVA protection.
