I went to Alisha's channel and checked out her videos. She is using a medicine dispensing syringe to suspend the water droplets on 100% watercolor paper. I also noticed that in one of her videos that the brush she was using to add the black color to the water droplets was slightly stiff and gummy looking of which is indicative of India ink. India ink will do a beautiful explosion when dropped into water onto cotton watercolor paper just like watercolors do. FYI- The syringe is the same king of syringe that pharmacies or veterinarians give you to administer medicines that are in liquid suspension form. I believe that Amazon sells the syringes.

Lovely effects there. It might be worth stretching the watercolour paper before doing this technique to stop any warping.

You should try some alcohol ink too. It does interesting things on water. Especially if you buy a cheaper set of alcohol inks. I’ve tried marbling paper by dropping a few drops of alcohol ink onto a water bath then placing a sheet of copy paper on top of the water (similar to Suminagashi. The alcohol ink has some resin in it so it sets when you put it on water, but different colours (& brands) will spread across the water to various degrees & if you blow on the water with a straw, or run a skewer through it gently to create a current, you’ll get some super cool marble effects & then the ink sticks to the paper. The colours will be a bit different on paper than on yupo (brighter), and metallics tend to clump so you don’t get the lovely textures, but you’ll still get some lovely irregular metallic blobs & sometimes flecks. If you give a few seconds between your droplets (& it’s a colour that doesn’t spread too fast) you can actually create roses with ringed type layers as the drop spreads the other ink outwards. Also, could you please zoom in on your papers to show details? It’s so hard to see the lovely & interesting effects you’re getting at the distance you film. Especially for those of us who tend to watch on our phones. Thank you 😊

I very much appreciate you sharing additional techniques to experiment with. Put them on my list for the new year!

I did a lot of experiments with fluid acrylic inks and alcohol inks with water on Yupo paper a few years ago, for Inktober. I got some wonderful pieces that I could not recreate if my life depended on it!

I actually have a few videos showing what I do with the collage papers I create on KZbin. Search a little bit back and you find 3 of them, spaced about 6 videos in between the paper demos.

Can you use something other than a tray to tape the paper on? Can you use any flat sturdy surface?

Yes anything that you can easily remove once the water has evaporated.

Since color changes with the Yaro, is there a way to keep the true color?

You want to drop the water onto freezer paper, and then add paint to that type of paper? Sounds like it will work, but you'll need to experiment to see. Do you want to use collage paper made from freezer paper?

I wonder if using a cooling rack and taping papers would speed up the drying time.
@catrains.artist9 ай бұрын
I do tape most of these papers as I'm creating them. Using a cooling rack is an interesting possibility for speeding up the drying time, along with a heat gun, which I did use for some of them off camera. I was impatient to see how some would turn out, and wasn't disappointed!
@jeraldbaxter35329 ай бұрын
Thank you! The papers are beautiful! I have two questions: #1: Does this technique work on paper that already has a layer of paint (gel prints, washes, etc.), and #2: Does it only work for drops, or, to use the technical term, would "squiggles work, also?
@catrains.artist9 ай бұрын
Great questions, and I don't know because I have tried either. I'm thinking it would probably work on dried gel prints. As for squiggles, you can create different shapes with the drops, spread them out to form abstract shapes. The artist I linked under show more does more than just plain drops.

What happens if after your first layer of dots dry you come back with a second layer of drops in a different color? And just how far can you push it? Can you actually put a dot overlapping another?
@mixedmedialife79169 ай бұрын
So did you try? 🤔
@catrains.artist9 ай бұрын
You can absolutely create layers by adding more drops over ones that have already dried. Check out the Instagram account of the artist I linked under show more - this is exactly what she does, except in only black.
