Wanted is an amazing trait. I have had bounty hunters pop in when other stuff is happening (For example a spacer ambush) leading to huge chaotic battles. Also a great source of gear and ships.

It really is! I actually had an insane flustercluck just the other day.. Jumped into a system and triggered a Spacer ambush.. AND the bounty hunters showed up too.. but it was the special bounty hunter event where the bounty *DEFENDERS* join in to defend you. I also had the Armillary on my ship, so the trigger chance on a Starborn ambushe activated, and 2 of those ships appeared. And on top of all that, there was a UC navy ship hanging out in orbit, so they joined in... Ended up being me, the UC Navy, and a couple bounty defenders vs Spacers, Starborn, and Bounty Hunters (And I think they ended up fighting each other a bit too). It was great!

Fully agree on the backgrounds. I tried to think about the starter skills on my first character, and luckily went with a background which worked for my character idea. On my next character though, I didn't bother with that. I chose the background I wanted to role-play as. There's also how even if you have a background that gives you ballistics or lasers as a starting skill, the mining laser, if you hold down the aim button while firing, is by far the best damage dealing weapon early on. You will melt most enemies' health bars fast and it staggers them. It also has the bonus of no ammo since it recharges on its own.

I've been using adoring fan quite often and he's very useful actually. He has scavenging as a perk that he extends to you which I believe adds to what you find plus he starts with a base carry weight of 160 vs the 135 that other companions have. Although he isn't great to assign as a crew member because he doesn't bring much of anything to ship skills. He also is unbiased so you don't have to worry about upsetting him if you decide to go criminal.

A word of warning. If you’re easily annoyed, I would stay away from that one. I tried him once and lasted about 5 hours before creating another character. If he existed in real life, most people would think he’s a stalker…😁

Hero Worshiped, Kid Stuff, Wanted, they add to the experience, the rest are just stat sticks / loot chests (maybe the faction/religion ones add content in that faction?). I put the fan on my ship so he's not there talking all the time, but then I get some comic relief after coming back in from whipping up on some mercs.

well, I've seen one reviewer say that all the weapon mods for the character are pointless. Then I watched another person who said he tried a run without the weapon boosts and he was dying so much more so he suggested a couple points into a weapon worked well for him. This may have everything to do with how good one is a first-person shooter. Also here I saw nothing about ships you want a good ship then you need to level up 2 skills one piloting and the second oops I didn't write it down but it had something to do with ship engineering of some kind and that isn't the name but if you open the ship modding and try to put in a B or C grade item you would learn the skills needed quickly :)

I like long hauler for the dialogue options and so many types of ships, apparel and spacesuits for truckers. I also like xenobiologists because I really like the xeno warfare aspect of the uc.

If you like dialogue, empath is a must. It doesn't specify that there will be extra options when talking to NPC's, but I was very surprised how much use I got out of it. The buff is extra crit chance for anyone who cares about that. I think it's +25% or - 25. But if you're here for the story, side missions and activities. "This is a MUST". Hopefully this helps.

At 11 hours, I started a new game and the second time picked a background based on how the skills would help me in the beginning. First time I used long trucker cause I wanted more of a space build. It was a constant struggle for ammo and health packs. 2nd time, chose combat medic and have caught back up to my previous save in half the time with ample ammo. Health packs still in short supply, especially when having to deal with the bullet sponge enemies (which are dumb and annoying.) But it made the early levels much easier.

What background are you running for your current playthrough? What's your character's story? Just in case it's not clear, dream home is paid weekly in game but it's a mortgage payment that contributed to the 125k credits, not 125k per in game week. You can pay more of it off to drive down the cost to 0 faster as well

Bounty Hunter. Let's you board enemy ships during the tutorial. I landed my slightly dented Crimson Fleet Ghost on Kreet. Religious Backgrounds suck. The chest of goodies is a couple of MedPacks and religious pamphlets. Not impressive at all. I've ran with Alien DNA and didn't notice a substantial difference between having it or not. Citizenship traits are okay. The extra rewards are hardly noticeable. Wanted gives me the opportunity to steal the mercenaries" ship. So my loadout is Bounty Hunter with Wanted. Bounty Hunters land. I lead them off and circle back to board their ship. It doesn't always work. Sometimes, they bring in a ship with a higher reactor than I can currently fly.

That is actually incorrect about the dream home. the 'weekly payment' is NOT deducted from the 125k. Also the 'weekly payment' only triggers when you try to enter your home before paying it off. When you try to enter the home, it will pop up a reminder that you need to pay your mortage and if you say OK, you pay basically the 'interest', and can then access the home for 1 week. After that, it doesn't keep automatically coming out of your account like the Parents one. it only gets charged again if you go to the house again after the week is up. Basically you 'rent' the house a week at a time, pay as you go style, until you can afford to pay off the 125k (In full, regardless of how many times you've paid the interest)

Like most Bethesda games, consumables (healing items, lockpicks etc) and money become irrelevant pretty quickly after the first 5-10 hours, so any traits (and perks) towards those are equally pretty useless. Same kinda applies to trait boosts to HP as they are equivalent to 2.5 levels and become increasingly insignificant as well (200 base health, +20 per level, traits give flat +50). Oxygen on the other hand does not go up with levels and (aside from a spoiler) there are limited ways to increase it so its a really really strong starting skill. Note: in space/Zero-G (there's some floaty levels) you can't sprint, so O2 isn't needed there. That makes Spaced a net negative, since you are *always* using O2 on land to run around.

I took the Homesteader background and took 3 traits: Dream Home, Raised Universal and Freestar Collective Settler. I am really enjoying it but if I were starting my char today I would probably trade Dream Home for Terra Firma to have the extra health and O2 on the surface. I am early game so I may find out later that I would regret terra firma if there is a lot of combat in staryards and other orbiting stations.

I picked the dream home for RP reasons and ended up being able to pay it off pretty quickly. The bigger problems is that I keep forgetting where it is since there's no marker for it on the galaxy/system maps.

I was disappointed that the Dream Home wasn't in a community with access to merchants, doctors, etc. It's really just a nice outpost without any extraction benefits.

@@jeffjwatts Yeah I was expecting it to be in one of the three major cities when I picked it. The RP behind my choice was that I'd bought it while working as a cyberneticist, then lost that job and ended up with Argos. Having it be off on its own doesn't really vibe with that story.

GREAT Video! I tried to get as many base skills I wanted first and went with Soldier Background + Terra Firma, Extrovert, and Hero Worshipped. I know some are you are think Hero Worshipped with all that companions babbling... Well I thought the babbling was minor drawback since I will be using him as an early inventory mule with some decent skills: Scavenging 1, Concealment 1, and Weight Lifting 2. And worst case I can always exile him to an outpost if I get tired of the babbling in Mid to late game lol.

Alien DNA is a trap trait at best. It adds a FLAT bonus to health and O2 which is quickly outscaled by simply leveling up, but it's a percentage penalty on items. It reduces both healing and many but not all beneficial effects (for example, the %O2 use reduction from drinking water). The healing effect reduction is really detrimental on Very Hard and I was chewing through my medkits WAY too fast. Similarly, Spaced, Serpents Embrace, and Terra Firma are all flat HP/O2, so they all become pretty much irrelevant, even more so than O2 usually is once you have a boost pack. Extrovert and Introvert however are % buffs, and particularly % cost reductions. If O2 really matters to you for some reason, Extravert/Intravert, an O2 reduction trait on helmet or suit (doesnt seem to stack), and drinking water should net you somewhere around 70% cost reductions, though I haven't tested the actual numbers.

I wish Alien DNA brought something more to the table. Like maybe being able to create special alien meat foods, or being buffed by alien food more. I tried my first playthrough with it with roleplay in mind, but it was just detrimental to my enjoyment of the game

the thing is alien DNA can easily be counted by putting a few skill points into medicine in the science tab and there is not much if anything that can increase your base o2 amount.

@@rileykiller5 What do you NEED o2 for? If you are boosting around using ALT, you never actually spend your o2. o2 actually regenerates while in the air, so you can run whenever you touch the ground and still boost/run infinitely with no traits/skills etc.

Dream home is a total waste of a perk pick and I regret taking it. A house doesn't really give you anything. And there's no reason to customize it if it has no use. Kid stuff was absolutely worth it. Adds a ton of content. Also, the 2% seems to be capped, as it never sends more than 500 credits even when you got millions. Generally I would recommend Kid stuff, Hero Worshipped if you want that unique companion (if not then a background trait or Terra Firma or Alien DNA if you don't care about those), and Wanted as its just a pure bonus trait. Even being attacked is a positive part of the trait, more xp and loot.

Funny I'm actually running kid stuff and hero worshipped and agree they are two of the best for what they actually add to the game itself. I ran house enlightened and need to test the other religion ones for more unique dialogue but it's been somewhat underwhelming so far

I chose Chef background because I wanted to see what the storyline and options will be. My goal is to turn all my outposts into dive bars/hole-in-the-wall restaurants with a franchise feel. Curious to see if the storyline will somehow get me a free restaurant at one or more of the main quest hubs.

the cooking system is utter garbage. also the food seems to be essential because you have to eat like 50 things to get your health up, but the cooking is atrocious and its impossible to get new recipe and stuff. basically if you want to cook you must waste your ammo to kill TONS of animals then make the shitty food that dont even heal worth a dam. your inventory will be full of ingredients for nothing.

First playthrough used this same skill and noticed while playing through the UC Vandguard storyline late in the main story that you could also hear the thoughts of the Terrormorphs while fighting them in both Tau Ceti and New Atlantis which I thought was really cool. Planning on a new character buildout with Xenobioligist as the job and including empathy with it to see what happens with the dialog on that storyline. Should hopefully be interesting and maybe open some things up with it too. Never know.

And while the game is definitely flawed, let's take a moment to remember what Skyrim looked like on launch and the absolutely crushing amount of game-breaking bugs in v1.0. I'm fine having a conversation about being pissed that Bethesda require the insane modding scene (free or nearly-free labor) they've cultivated to 'fix' and upgrade their game to turn them into the amazing games we talk about, but that's unfortunately not the conversation being had when people talk about this game, because nuance doesn't get clicks.

I chose pilgrim. Empath is really good if you like companions. Generally you're not going to take them with you if you don't do what they like (at least imo). The effect lasts two hours. Kid stuff is interesting. I chose it and my gf did not. I don't notice the money drain (I'm lvl 11 with around 50k credits all from just doing missions and some light selling and buying). I did get a reward that she did not get when joining constellation. I think having the sneak perk can be really valuable as well just for the detection bar

I’m assuming space and taskmaster go well for a ship upgrading run on new game plus. Probably gonna go diplomat and be persuasive , with extrovert, parents, and terra firma. A totally non specialised character so I can play about with stuff and not lock myself into a playstyle or weapon class and do a main quest only run. I can make heavily themed characters for future builds suitable for each faction then with info I can gather on a first playthrough.

Chose bounty hunter myself for the piloting and subsystem targeting makes boarding by ships easier and saves me having to point additional points to piloting which you would have to do anyway however the only real dialogue I’ve found with bounty hunter is npc security warning you to behave they don’t want to have to bring you in on a Charge and dialogue directed to other bounty hunters if you have wanted trait(great for low hp damage)I’d love to know which background gives more interaction dialogue though. Is soldier as good as reddit has said with the dialogue with it or is it filler like all of the backgrounds? Hardest part besides that was trying to not pick a faction but after the vanguard questlines it’s hard to paint them as good lol but the freestar are boring space cowboys it seems they spent less writing time on the rangers questline compared to the United Colonies

I've got 160 hours with the Soldier background, I have no idea what Reddit is talking about. I've played all the main missions and side missions I could find, and I only remember having a [soldier] dialogue option a couple times.. and none seemed to matter. In fact I've been pretty disapointed by the # of times it SHOULD have caused an option but didn't.. Trying to join UC Police, yumi asks if i have combat experience.. I can tell him I once got into a fight with some pirates, but not that I'm literally a TRAINED SOLDIER. Joining UC Vanguard or Freestar Rangers, can't remember any Soldier dialogue options.. No option to say I'm already trained, OR talk about when I used to serve with them.. so who was I a soldier for? It's honestly frustrating. I've had LOTS of skill & Trait dialogue options, almost nothing with background.

I thought the same with Wanted. After NG+ I got rid of it, because those fights don't really add anything. I can get into fights, get loot and XP, etc., without the trait. Ultimately had Hero Worshipped and Alien DNA, and while DNA drops the *effectiveness* of food items, including bonuses apparently, I'd say out of the three it's the only one that I don't regret. If I do another playthrough, not sure what I'll pick. Probably Alien DNA, Taskmaster, and some mysterious third trait from a mod that's actually useful. If not that, maybe Terra Firma, because space encounters are *super* uncommon.

Empath is THE WORST because the Constellation companions are so judgmental. They hate eeeeeeeeeverything you do unless you're playing a goody two shoes. Spaced is good if you're planning to be a pirate, tho. You can jump onto others ships, murder them all, then get yourself a new ship!

I took Wanted on my first character, and so far it really sucks. When I meet bounty hunters on planets they are so weak that I slaughter them in no time flat. But in outer space I randomly get attacked by multiple powerful bounty hunter ships (always 3 on 1), and get killed in about….3 to 5 seconds. Wanted sounds cool on paper but the implementation is just bad, and it’s generally a fun killer

I've had the opposite experience. My first time meeting bounty hunters was the ONLY time i ever met them on a planet, and it was a VERY tough encounter. Every time since has been in space, and they seem to be slightly higher level than normal for whatever system I'm in. I've died to them a couple times, but usually it's not that difficult, and if I see that it's gonna be too tough a fight, it only takes a few seconds to grav jump out.

The stats of traits aren’t very fully explained. Do some traits rank up well while others are just an initial boost?

Guide could use updating now that more details are known. As far as I can tell, the traits are mostly RP for occasional dialogue. According to the comments, the HP bonuses are small, flat, and therefore all but useless. The one exception is Wanted, which could get annoying but is also the only trait with a (very situational) damage buff. If I made a new character, I'd honestly just run the Unlisted background, since it comes with no baggage, and Introvert, since it has no downsides for my playstyle. I could just as easily run with no traits at all. Alien DNA is fun RP but underwhelming in practice, same for the other HP perks. If the dialogue or worldbuilding was better, I'd be interested in faction or religion traits, but I've learned to be extremely cynical about the writing quality in Starfield.

I haven't see any dialogue options based on my bk rnd my guy!! U should most def put weight in the starting skills over the bk ground as much as the traits. N no the dream home u just pay as u go fool!! Stop giving false info. You pay 500 creds for a week at a time. If u dont use your house it doesn't stack up the rent. The huge cost is only an option if u wanna pay it off in one lump sum and never pay the 500 for a week again!! 500 for a week is nothing as this house is massive!! Can use it to store items, build work benches inside etc!!!

I wish I saw this video before I started playing. I got hung up with another starting guide that focused on the best starting skills. It was totally pointless and confirmed my RPG bias to focus on locks and persuasion early. Leaning into the roll play adds more to the playthrough due to the dialogue options and character identity in the world. I'd like to see someone rank the backgrounds based on how they change dialogue and emersion. It would have been been better for players to have 1 trait assigned at background, not 3.

Yet Boost Jumping doesn't seem to work at all when you're overencumbered, which you will be most of the time. And it doesn't help that your ship has a tiny cargo hold which can't be expanded in either capital city, or perhaps even anywhere else.

it doesnt really cost much to rebuild your ship, get a bigger living area so you can mount a couple of cargo holds on it. might mess with the look of the ship, but having like 1000 capacity cargo hold is nice.

I picked Space Scoundrel not sure if dialogue is different then other back ground options, but my character has a lot sarcasm choices. So i'm not sure how to take my character seriously......If i spoke how the character did i would get super annoyed.....options to beg or tell the other person to beg kind of weird stuff to me.

I kind of stopped playing main missions to level up, and unlock skills by doing mission board stuff. I'm yet to see what they say when you get deeper into the story.

I have a problem with your suggestion to choose background based on RP.. that's what I did, and was VERY disappointed. I've got about 160 hours in the game, and my background (Soldier) has come up.. I wanna say three times maybe? And never when I thought it would. The most Jarring for me was very early on when I joined the UC Police as a freelance and Yumi asked if I had any combat experience.. I can tell him I recently had a run in with pirates, but not that I'm LITERALLY ALREADY A TRAINED SOLDIER. Similar issue when I tried joining the UC Vanguard and Freestar Rangers, and no option to talk about my past as a Soldier... Who was I a soldier with if none of these people have any record of me? I've seen traits (such as Wanted & UC Native) pop up FAR MORE frequently than my background.

16.8 hours deep and I can confirm Spaced is junk. If these traits can be changed (i know get rid of, but can you add a new one afterward?) than spaced could be great once I'm really into ships and Privateering. Right now... No good. If you want a space trait early, Taskmaster is good. IF you need a space trait. Edited to correct playtime.

I love your videos, but I disagree a bit. I don't think Weightlifting is as key as everyone else. I got a pack on the fist mission that gave me +20kg and a shirt that gave +5kg, plus you have companions to carry stuff and your ships cargo. They'll probably patch it, but if you see a ship land on a planet and the captain needs "ship parts" you can take their ship without any crime. You'll need two levels in security to pick the lock, but it's a great way to get free ships with bigger cargo holds, even a shielded one for smuggling. I think an extra 10kg carrying early isn't nearly as useful others. I'd say Security is a must right away. There are a lot of locks to pick if you want all the loot and lore. A lot of radian quests have a big locked chest. Also Stealth is key cuz you don't get a stealth bar until you put a point in it. I'd avoid all the combat skills at first unless you're playing above normal difficulty. Finally persuasion is very very useful, stock up on wine ;) haha. On traits, there is a big mission on a space station early on so that would be tough with Terra Frima. I think native traits are great unless you're going to be a full time pirate. The bounty downside isn't much and the added dialog makes the game more fun and rpg flavor. You get tons of free crew so I wouldn't shy away from Taskmaster. Lastly, I love the Kid's Stuff trait. It's so funny, totally worth it if you cannot decide on any other ones. So far Raised Enlightened has been a lame choice except for flavor. I went with the Professor background and I think I found a crew member that joined me because of my background and there have been some but overall, so far it's only had a few extra dialog options. I am role playing a Professor who was dismissed for encouraging his students to explore space after one of them was killed by the Crimson Fleet. I'm struggling with the guilt and failure, while still having an urge to explore. I chose the traits of Kid's Stuff, Freestar Collective Native, and Raised Enlightened. Random note: The stealth archer build is super OP.

@steriopticon2687 Nope, there is no way in Tartarus that the investment of register captured ships is worth it. You only make about 10% to 15% in revenue above the registration cost. I can make more by just selling looted weapons and gear after clearing an outpost.

Your latest guides in skills and mods are awesome, but frankly I'm disappointed in this video. I was hoping you'd actually quantify what the traits actually do. Does Terra Firma give a flat increase to oxygen? Or is it a percentage increase? Etc. Unfortunately the information in this video isn't any different from reading the trait descriptions in-game.
