The "walk-past" videos were a marvelous visual aid to communicate the actual three dimensional spaciousness of the scenes.

What OP said above, I agree 100% turns out anyone can be an artist if they have the right mentor

best decision I made is to subscribe to you. Your clear thoughts and well structured explanations make it a joy to watch and easy to understand.

Your presentation of depth of field is great and makes so much sense even I can understand. When I was a kid I took things that I saw and did a sketch without understanding the real problem sometimes my sketches had depth and sometimes not and this frustrated me to no end. Then when I started working at a career and for 5 years I was a design draftsman where detail was everything. There was no need for depth of field only different views in a flat plane that is top, front, and side views. Then the last 20 years of my work life I used computer screens and software for depth of field which is a whole different story.

I have exactly these problems with these sort of complex scenes. Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a go.

Thanks, Stephen. Most helpful. I wonder whether you think, in this context, that the so-called '70:30' drawing rule, i.e. ensuring that 30% of one's subject is fully focused and the rest treated as periphery, has some merit.

I've watched dozens of these videos and learnt a lot and they are very entertaining also. This was great too, but this also was the first disappointment sort of. I wanted to see you draw that self-portrait.

Haha. Actually, I’ve stuck it on the wall in the room where I draw, so I haven’t forgotten it, but I’m not sure I want to look at it so carefully to draw it!😀
