Very easy to follow, quite fast (which made it confusing at times but in the end, i like it because you get straight to the point) and really cool for those of us who haven't given the whole 3D thing a go yet! Just wanted to say thanks so much for taking the time to make this! With practise, hopefully i can make something at least half as awesome as yours!

I am avidly learning new things with photoshop these last couple weeks and after watching this once I was able to go through it alone (with your great meterials of course) to reach that next level and not feel like a PS Noob anymore haha. Thank you so much I have subscribed and will be going through as many of your tutorials as I can to become an advanced photoshop artist. Thank You

You could try using the Spherize function in Filter tab, then Distort and Spherize is one of the choices. I push the slider control to full amount, and depending on the result I sometimes Spherize things twice to get what I like. Hope that helps.

College is one way to learn about graphic design, but it's not the only way either. There are numerous things that you can learn online. I don't know if 28 is too old to get started, I guess it depends on how fast of a learner you are. I've been working with Photoshop for about 6 years now (it's been a slow process, given that I've been in school) and you can have a good idea of where I'm at skill-wise. My recommendation, if you really wanted to, would be to go to college AND learn online =) -B

I am pretty good with Photoshop, but when you showed what you were going to make I had no idea how you were going to do it After following your instructions I pieced it together easily and it turned out awesome I also learned a lot of techniques that I can apply on other things that I am working on, so thanks a bunch!

You could use a circular marquee, but you might want to use the bloat tool (in the liquify dealio) to distort it to make it look more spherical. Then add in the shadows and highlights to really emphasize that sphere shape that you need it to have. Hope that turns out all right =) -B

Dear Friend, to make clouds/smoke/clusters - Brush Stroke - Airbrush + Smoothing at 0% hardness and 50% opacity. Draw your desired shape, duplicate it, and add gaussian blur to the copied layer. Layer - Effect - Maximize - will create pixelated shapes of smoke like features. Duplicate layer, render cloud, change to overlay for the puffiness. For light streaks. Click 'path' tab, use pen tool to draw desired line, circle back and close loop. Make two layers - white and color. Blur color behind.

One alternative to the 3D object is to choose a texture, use an elliptical marquee to make a circle over it. Then in filters distort it with Spherize.

@ChChCheckItsClan I'm not amazing yet, but I do create my own textures/ brushes and use them to make a scene from scratch. I know many people who do as well. However, this is still an interesting tutorial > never knew this about Photoshop CS5. If I recall, taking real images and drawing over them to create hyper realism is called matte painting.

@Thejrrg That's usually how things are done, at least in my experience. You take real images to create more realistic effects. Makes sense to me. Besides, imagine how much longer it would take to actually create the stars and smokiness from scratch O.o
