Honestly took me from 1997 until 2019 to realise John Shuttleworth was a character, I say realise... someone told me.

It's the minutia and making boring daily things funny, and northern old fashioned words and voices that get me. Love Shuttleworth!

John Shuttleworth is a man for all seasons. Also John talking to Mary and Joan Chitty is a joy as all Graham Fellows. Underrated talent

Lovely to have been able to host this very capable entertainer in our cellar venue some years ago. He certainly appreciated our red velvet curtains. Shandy Bass ... lovely reference, takes me back. And what superb 'keyboard work'.

I Laughed today - Opened the fridge to find I had two packs of butter on the go - I'm posh, don't touch marge.

3 things notable: 1 When on picture , Incredible how Graham looks nothing like John, he is transformed just by facial expression & mannerism (minor hair changes but that wouldn't be essential). 2 The rhyming trivia lyrics: similarities with some Ian Dury but taken to a comical extreme. 3 Brilliant extra voice characters, especially Ken

My favourite comic by far..expression is everything in my opinion. .Graham has got John off so good, its so easy to think he exists as a real person, brilliant, just brilliant. 🎤🎵👍

I feel that John is slightly obsessive and anxious, he keeps the chaos at bay with order and neatness, everything in a certain way with certainty, like in the UK before deindustrialisation. Even cohabiting can be emotionally fraught when someone else without a thought opens a Second margarine and leaves the other in a quandary as to which one to use up first each time the marge needs using. John speaking to these kind of private anxieties can be quite cathartic.

I realise that comedy is very subjective and that with some that if you don't get it straight from the off then you never will. Speaking for myself I just don't get 'The Shuttleworths", "Count Arthur Strong" or "Ivor Cutler". I listen to Radio 4 and 4extra quite a lot and with at least one of these, at first, I didn't even identify it correctly as comedy. I thought it was supposed to be some kind of attempt at surreal performance art for the radio. I am still to be convinced.

You're right, it's highly subjective. I live in Scotland and 'get' Ivor Cutler. John Shuttleworth makes me laugh out loud, whereas Count Arthur Strong just irritates me.
