Plum Village

Күн бұрын

In this Dharma Talk at the start of the second week of our Summer Retreat, Brother Phap Huu begins by asking us a simple question: Have we really arrived in Plum Village? Or are we still running in the past, future, or even getting lost in the present?
The first Dharma Seal of Plum Village is the practice of learning to be at home: I have arrived, I am home.
The present moment contains the past and the future. By taking care of the present moment, we build a beautiful past as well as a future. We need to explore and develop the seed of mindfulness in us in order to strengthen our capacity to dwell in the here and now. We taste life and feel our aliveness.
The habit energy of running has been transmitted to us by our ancestors and our society. By coming back to our breath and our steps in daily life, we can transform this habit. Our breath becomes a refuge against our habit energies that solidify our presence. We need to learn to stop, rest, and become sustainable to ourselves.
Presence is also possible in painful moments, as Thay’s life shows with beauty and strength. By learning to live a painful moment deeply, we develop the capacity to embrace unpleasant sensations.
The Art of Happiness is also a very important part of the practice. In our daily life, we learn to identify and treasure the conditions of happiness that are already there. By nourishing our happiness, we are already transforming our suffering.
In our times, it is crucial that we learn to love Mother Earth again. We need to see that she is inside of us and not outside. We are part of the environment. We need to create a culture of healing, stopping, and having enough.

Wow…I wanted to write exactly the same! There was a time, when I was sad when Thay was gone. But I was wrong, Thay never has left - he lives on in you brother Phap Huu 🙏🏻 I hope I will meet you in person one day! That you are here creates a lot of trust in the world.

Dear brother Phap Huu, thank you for this most beautiful Dharma talk! Your teaching is so clear and deep. In one hour you pass on so many truths and so much wisdom. You are full of insight, of lovingkindness and compassion - in talking, teaching, smiling you are the true continuation of our beloved teacher Thay. I also want to say a heartfelt „thank you“, dear brother, for your stories about your time with Thay, your personal encounters, your experiences - your dearest memories and your kind openness and willingness to share them with us. Imagining Thay caressing and thanking his paralyzed arm moved me to tears, too… May you be blessed, dear brother Phap Huu 🙏

The breath can be an anchor for self-awareness of the mind. When the mind settles "at home" in the breath, as Brother Phap Huu says, then the mind can watch its thoughts and feelings, without judgement, without trying to do anything with them, and then they disappear of their own accord and one's mind does not get attached nor addicted to them. Thoughts and feelings are not the problem, the problem starts when the mind holds onto them or tries to get rid of them.

@bastianelken7125

Dear Susan, I suggest you try to embrace your feeling as a mom would embrace and care for a child. Allow yourself to deeply feel your sadness, fully accept it and care for it; give it your full attention and love. Eventually it will transform into another and much more pleasant feeling; like when a child stops crying because the mother cared for it and the child e.g. starts smiling. Best wishes.
