When I was working in a fabric store, one of the gals working with me let me borrow a vintage book she had from Singer on how to embroider with the treadle sewing machines back then. I don't remember when the book was made. 1900s- 1910s I think. I do free motion embroidery using a free motion foot on my Bernina. Fun.

Oh how absolutely beautiful is that? I wonder if I have room for a treadle machine, I have always loved them and thought I should have one in case power cuts? Great excuse isn't it? I wonder if I can use it for free arm quilting, have you tried that on the treadle. Thank you showing us all your beautiful work.

Call me amazed. This is kind of like "rub your tummy and pat your head" since you have to keep up a steady treadle motion by moving your feet in one direction, and then keep up a steady movement of the embroidery hoop in another direction. I'm super impressed with your coordination AND artistic ability.

@MarilynLeefabricthreadartist9 жыл бұрын
+joanne Nilsson Yes you can take the foot of but it can be a little frustrating at first to get used to sewing that way...just be very, very sure your work is extremely tight in the hoop.......it will make all of the difference in the world..............and thank you!

Really amazing skill! But I have a dumb question: are you using a zigzag stitch, or a straight stitch?
@MarilynLeefabricthreadartist8 жыл бұрын
+wize1 Thank you!....It is a straight stitch treadle.............no zig-zag. It is the motion of your hands rather than the machine that is creating the zig-zag.........
@wize16218 жыл бұрын
Wow, thanx so much for that prompt response! In the meantime, I've been trying it on my machine, but am encountering skipped stitches when I go backwards (iow, when I move the hoop forward). Is that a no-no? I tried 2 different machines, all different stitch sizes, and it still did it no matter what.
@MarilynLeefabricthreadartist8 жыл бұрын
One of the biggest reasons you will get skipped stitches is because your fabric is not tight enough in the hoop.........it has to be extremely tight. One other reason it may happen is because you may not be holding your hoop flat enough on the machine bed.
@wize16218 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that. Soon as this new ear infection's gone, I'll give it another whirl. ;)

Shan Bartholomew Thank you! I love treadle sewing machines! It is amazing the beautiful work that can be done with one. I started embroidering with one a year ago in June. Once you know the basics and get the "rhythm" of the treadle down it is easy and so much fun! I want to put together a few videos on the basics of this wonderful art also.

Marilyn..do you hand draw the flowers and leaf shapes or is that some kind of stencil?
@MarilynLeefabricthreadartist9 жыл бұрын
+amiswish ............You can find free embroidery patterns on the internet. I copied one of them and then traced it on to fabric. Iron on stencils also work great as a pattern.
@amiswish9 жыл бұрын
Marilyn Lee Thanks for the answer...I guess after the landscape quilt, I might just dust off the treadle machine to try this.

+sewobsessedmama ----You will love your treadle! You should watch my video on getting your machine ready..it will explain a little bit to you about what you will need to know to embroidery on it!......Let me know how it goes!
@sewobsessedmama9 жыл бұрын
where did you get your designs from? you are such an inspiration.
@MarilynLeefabricthreadartist9 жыл бұрын
Thank you! You can find a lot of embroidery patterns on line.....free to use line drawings and this is where I found this design. Just google embroidery patterns or something to that effect. Also iron on transfers work great.
@ClayHouseStudio9 жыл бұрын
+sewobsessedmama The foot is removed here from what I see. The feed dogs do not drop on the treadle machines. You will have to use a feed dog cover, which screws to the base under the head.
@MarilynLeefabricthreadartist9 жыл бұрын
+ClayHouseStudio ..Yes the foot is removed and I find it better to remove the feed dogs compared to using feed dog cover but it is certainly an option. With the feed dogs removed your work will lay completely flat against the machine bed which makes it much easier to embroidery.
@wize16218 жыл бұрын
OK, I was watching another video of yours and saw in the comments that you said a rotary machine works better with this technique than one that uses a bobbin. So could that be the problem with my skipping stitches (i.e. the fact that my machine uses a bobbin)? Sorry to have so many questions, but I'd really, really like to get this to work, if there were some way (I don't have a treadle machine).
@MarilynLeefabricthreadartist8 жыл бұрын
No problem with questions! I should have also added that an Oscillating hook sewing machine along with a rotary hook both work great. Both of these types use bobbins. Most machines have bobbins(and bobbin casings) unless you have a chain stitch machine. What I was referring to was the old shuttle bobbin machines, this is where the shuttle that holds the bobbin moves back and forth from front to back. The shuttle machines do not work as well for embroidery. Sometimes it does take a little experimenting to figure out why you may be skipping stitches. Check your tensions and again be sure your fabric is hooped drum tight and hold your work nice and flat on the bed of the machine. Go slow to start with small stitches..........small stitches tend to skip less often. After you get the hang of it you can try larger stitches...............
