This is awesome and very helpful. I'm the opposite, I can do line very well but when it comes to getting original colour schemes specially when I do shirt work, I just can't do it. A few weeks ago I did a hooded and caped character and the line work was not bad at all, but when I took it to Photoshop for the colouring in I just couldn't. So I got my friend to do it for me, and he does really awesome colour schemes. Then I just worked on it... I haven't finished it yet and probably won't. It's one of those things you can't get past and lose interest. That's not to say I can't do colour, it's that I struggle in some areas.

I run into the same problem sometimes when I create a character as well. Just make sure everything is lining up in the facial structures and imagine how the different shapes of the face would look like at a profile angle. Just keep trying, it sometimes takes me about 5 times to get it right ;)

One more thing to I'd suggest is that you should draw the character with both arms up (standing like a t with legs apart). - that makes it easier to add bones when rigging and their is less conflict with the bone weights. This is particularly important with 3dsMAX and Maya where the default bone weights take a fair bit of modifying (hours or days on high poly models) before the character can move without other body parts effecting the wrong parts of the mesh. Other than that you tutorial lines up with most graphic projection techniques and is very similar to what you would do when hand drawing scaled working drawings.
@CiprianHanga9 жыл бұрын
+JOUE BIEN TECH good advice from an animator's point of view, bad advice from a modeller's point of view. that kind of turnarounds with the arms in a T form are responsible for a lot of characters in games look like they have shrugged shoulders. the modeler matches up the concept piece with the slightly lifted shoulder blades, and when they let the arms hang loose the shoulder blades remain fixed in the same spot, even though in real life the shoulder blades actually go down as well. this is more of a modeller's fault, really, but as far as I know that's why nowadays the arms in an slightly angled position (as seen here) are considered the norm.
@zachl37639 жыл бұрын
+JOUE BIEN TECH Depends what you're doing it for. Big video game companies tend to go through the extra effort to rig at an angle because the arms spend much more time in lowered poses, so there's less deformation required than if starting from T-pose, which is an extreme pose for their purposes. But you're absolutely right, T-pose is much easier to work with.

So, if you're doing both the drawing and modelling yourself, would you still go through every step (from reference to concept, from concept to turnaround, from turnaround to model) or cut a few corners and model right from scratch?

@nenemydog8 жыл бұрын
I have been drawing with a bamboo pen back in the days. But it has nothing to do with the tablet. I think what you are looking for are the brush settings in photoshop.
@deedee82298 жыл бұрын
Do you have any suggestion on the brush settings? I have the same question.
@nenemydog8 жыл бұрын
yes, I do. sorry for replying so late. If you want your brush to draw like a pencil then you should turn transfer on in the brush settings. This will make darker lines when you press harder. This is good for sketching. If you want to make consistent black outlines then you need to turn transfer off. This will make that no matter how hard or light you press the color stays the same. This is good for doing clean line art. A simple way to use this is by sketching something with transfer on. Once you're done, you can turn down the opacity of the layer to make the drawing look transparent (like he does in the video). Then you make a new layer where you can trace your drawing with transfer off and end up with a clean line art. The good things about this is that you don't need to worry about the sketch looking bad. You can have lines that are off and stuff like that but it doesn't matter since when you trace it you can ignore those. Play around with it and see what you can come up with.

D3b1724 Gamer Adobe has started up a new subscription based way of buying programs like Photoshop. I'm no master on it, so you would have to check out their website www.adobe.com/products/photoshop.html?promoid=KLXLS From what I DO know, you have to pay a monthly fee of $29 (I think). There are /other/ ways of getting Photoshop of course, but there are a lot of cheaper programs too! A popular once amongst illustrators is Paint tool SAI www.systemax.jp/en/sai/ The earlier versions of Photoshop are good too. I'm sure you can find those much cheaper c:
