and create a unique style you did! The illustrations are very well thought out. The tilt you mentioned on the objects from an outside perspective looks like the 'correct' viewpoint you get from an illustration similar to how a pop-up book works and KZbin interviews is 100% the way to be discovered in this landscape now (imo)

I am so eager to see more. You're also incredibly eloquent, you explain yourself and your creative decisions so well, demonstrate great problem solving skills and are just an over all joy to listen too. Absolutely love the wholesomeness, can't wait to play this game. I love getting these peeks behind the scenes. Fascinating about the sunlight/movement. I am old enough to remember Perils of Rosella, KQ IV, the first game that came out with a visible day/night cycle. It was mindblowing at the time!

I'm not in game dev or anything close, so seeing all this behind the scene look at games is always interesting. For example, seeing all the foliage and assets actually placed at an angle, but from the player's POV, they look like they're standing straight up. Thanks for sharing!

I just wanted to drop by and express my admiration for the incredible work you're doing with this game. It's truly refreshing to see game developers like you putting your creativity into non-violent games that not only entertain but also contribute positively to the gaming landscape. Your commitment to crafting a gaming experience that focuses on storytelling, creativity, and non-violent gameplay is truly commendable. It's a testament to the fact that games have the power to bring joy, inspire, and connect us in ways beyond just action and competition. Can't wait to see Songs of Glimmerwick come to life. Sending all the positive vibes your way! 🚀✨ Keep up the fantastic work! 👏

Wowowowo this game is growing on me so much. At first I brushed this game kinda off since I'm personally more of a fan of subjectively more immersive 3D 1st person games; and I've found the 2d farming sims to be repetitive and boring rather than relaxing. But now seeing this devlog and then watching the 1st one, I'm just in love with the artstyle and very happy to hear about, and see, how quality over quantity this game is; and that the gametime is more focused on questing rather than mindless farming. This game looks like it has a lot of love and effort poured into it.

Oh, and also! I've worked quite a bit with animation, and I've used alot of 2D and 3D crossover work. I've used Blender Grease pencil for alot of my work, much for reasons you mention. It's also very interesting to be able to do certain objects in actual 3D with a sketch look, and the rest of the world in actual 2D. Very useful for certain types of scenes and surroundings to be able to combine the two techniques. ( I just came to the part in the video where you discussed this, heh)

Man, the low poly mesh buildings are so subtle, but so cool! I don’t think this game would feel the same without it! I think this game feels like a pop up book. I’ve always wanted to start a game, so I was wondering-cozy games are so abundant these days. So many farms and nature exploration mechanics. How did you go about deciding what would make your game stand out? I know you mentioned the farming system is different, but is there anything else you wanted to make different?
@eastshadestudios83353 ай бұрын
When Jaclyn had the idea for this game in 2017, and we decided it would be our next, everything was totally different. Farming Sim was a super tiny genre with only a handful of titles. Even in 2019 when we started production proper, things were different. I guess everyone had the same idea. We couldn't have known that. Unfortunately we spend a lot of time on our games so we don't know what the landscape will be like by the time we ship. There are a lot of small design things that make this game different, but more than anything we just have to let our unique tone, sense of place, and world building set us apart!

Hey Danny, the game is looking amazing and thank you so much for answering my question! It’s a crazy coincidence but with the recent success of Palworld and Helldivers I was trying so hard to understand how they became so insanely popular seemingly out of nowhere, and I came to basically the same conclusion you suggested: the premise and core idea is pulling a ton of the weight. Will definitely keep that in mind for my future projects but it’s tough when you can’t undo what’s already been made, i.e. for my previous games 😅 In that sense little marketing wins like what you mentioned might be the best way forward! I highly appreciate your insight (on marketing & your technical workflow) especially as someone who relied on your dev blogs on day/night cycles and forest design back in the day 😂 It’s great that you’re still willing to share your process after all this time. Looking forward to the next update!
@EZHNO3 ай бұрын
Hello Matt, I took a little look at your games too. I would say your prices on the first few games were too ambitious for what they appear to be, and changing the price would be effective for retroactively improving marketing/sales. When I look at Iron Reckoning or Skyway, I see a games that have some cool mechanics that pull me in, but I can also see what appears to be inconsistency and a bit of jank. Which on its own is something that doesn't bother me, but I'm not going to bother paying 15$/6$ for them, when I could pay that same amount or less and get a really polished similar product that has already "proved itself" to the market. Also a word on your Game trailers. All that I watched were fun to watch, but didn't do the best job at conveying the key points of the gameplay in a timely manner. For Shinogi 2, your first trailer doesn't even show any of the interaction/chats with characters, which appears to be a huge part of the game from my understanding. Also it doesn't really show enough of the unique chess mechanics in an obvious way, its easy to not even notice it, so I would put more emphasis into that too. People generally don't give each game a very long look, so you can't really assume people are gonna take the time to watch the second trailer or read through descriptions. So you really want to pack those essential gameplay elements into the area where they will get the most eyes and make them abundantly obvious. You want everyone to be able to easily understand what your game / gameplay is, and what your unique selling points are, in a very short amount of time. Hope that helps.
@robproductionsgames3 ай бұрын
@@EZHNO Thanks for the feedback! Will definitely try to better understand audience expectations for both of those aspects but it's definitely tough to find a good balance for the kinds of games I typically make. On one hand I want my games to be affordable but also don't want to undervalue my projects. Between Steam's cut, regional pricing, and sale periods it's already down to earning pennies at times and they're not too far off from similar titles with similar scope based on my research, but I totally understand that it's tough for people to recognize that when they quickly glance at it. My earlier games were not too pretty to look at which didn't help either. As for trailers, SCC2 was mainly marketed towards players of the first game and I didn't try too hard to pull in new players but that in itself was probably a mistake. It was also really hard to explain chess in a way that was interesting for players; I also struggle knowing which parts of my games people actually care the most about because they specifically use hybrid genre to provide some variety haha. Regardless, still more to learn there for sure and I'm just a little frustrated as I've been at this for 8+ years and not seeing as much progress as I'd like, but that's on me. Appreciate you taking a look!
@EZHNO3 ай бұрын
@@robproductionsgames yeah I completely understand not wanting to undervalue your projects, but lowering their value can also increase the net revenue in many cases. And yeah I would say marketing to the existing audience is a mistake, since your existing audience is always going to be smaller than the potential audience you can pull in. As for struggling to know which parts of the game people will care about, I suggest you try to plan that out for the next project. Take the time to understand why you enjoy the things you enjoy from the games that inspire you. And then apply that to your game design and try to really keep it in mind while making the game. I also suggest trying to work with other people if you haven't tried, its good for learning quickly, takes some weight off your shoulders, easier to stay motivated, and you'll be able to get extra information that will help you make crucial decisions for your game. For example when working alone I have a tendency to shrug off certain things that I quickly adapt to, such as weird controls or difficult gameplay, etc. When working with other people, that sort of thing gets shut down instantly, and its for the better, because the game isn't made for me. That sort of thing can happen with almost any element from the music used, to the art, etc. I certainly understand the frustration of putting in a bunch of effort for minimal results. But between being able to acknowledge your own faults, and your willpower to stay dedicated, success is basically guaranteed. Keep chipping away at it

@Nighthearted3 ай бұрын
Eastshade looks and sounds like such a charming experience. I've read about it some years ago and watched some channels I follow review it (like Cannot Be Tamed). I'm sad that I won't ever be playing it because of the first person perspective. I could never get used to that camera perspective in any game I tried, it takes me out of the experience completely (contrary to what most people seem to feel). I'm lucky motion sickness isn't an issue for me though, and I even enjoy first person conversation with NPCs, but it's just not my thing for exploration. I'd love a TPP toggle in that game, but I know when something's made in first person it's a hassle to do anything else with the camera because of the level design. Glimmerwick though... I can already see I'm gonna spend MONTHS playing this one! It looks so unique and mesmerizing. Everything about this game sounds like it's right down my alley, even though it will be a first experience with a non violent game for me. I'm sure it'll be remarkable. I have a question about it: are relationship with NPCs friendships only or will we be able to romance classmates or other NPCs?
@eastshadestudios83353 ай бұрын
Well glad to hear you'll be able to enjoy this one! No romance in Glimmerwick. Unfortunately no chance of 3rd person for Eastshade. I'd say it's more than a hassle and a bit more toward the "developing a second game entirely" category. Camera behavior in small interiors is notoriously impossible. And there is no avatar by design in Eastshade, so we'd have to sort of break our vision and lore to make one. Then there's the problem of authoring an entire animation set. This is a game where you can steer multiple kinds of boats, ride zip lines, and ride a bicycle, so that's tons of animations including all new logic for mounting/dismounting. We'd even have to redesign a new interaction system since it's aim and click.

I already edited this into my comment on the previous devlog, but since it wasn't brought up in this one I'll bring up again: Could you tell us a bit about character creation and customization? In eastshade, you just picked a name and then you could make some choses about how play the character through dialogue options. With Songs of Glimmerwick being third person there's obviously gonna be a bit more than that in this, but I'm curios to hear some details about what kind of options we will have.
@eastshadestudios83353 ай бұрын
hey hey! We will definitely have a devlog dedicated to this! But for now I'll just say that the character customization is reasonably robust for this kind of game. There's a lot of hair styles (30 atm), multiple options for each facial feature, skin tone, freckles, wrinkles, glasses, beards etc etc.

I love to play games with my elderly family members, but half of the time neither of us can read the fonts as they’re too small or the style is too fancy with a Minecraft narrator style text speech reader it makes it easier for a wide range of people to play the game and know what each item or button is/does.

1) This game looks beautiful. Wow. 2) Your advice about marketing is 100% correct! It's such an important lesson in any art form: make something people want and attention will come. I was a journalist for years and no amount of begging and advertising beat artists who make excellent stuff. I was way more likely to cover something that made me say "that's cool," as opposed to getting bombarded by PR. I know reality is more gray and complicated than my simple observation. Still, I think it's solid advice in general for artists to focus on making excellent work that people want rather than getting caught up trying to build hype.
@eastshadestudios83353 ай бұрын
Thank you for the kind words! Means a lot to us! One still has to grind on the marketing unfortunately. You still DO have to bombard people with PR, do press releases, reach out to people, and pour resources into building a "hype train". My point was not to skip all that stuff, but that none of it will work unless you have a product that is highly competitive with the top of your genre.
This looks amazing! A question - why are you not using an orthographic camera? Seems more fitting for this style then perspective, would love to know your thoughts. Thanks!

Hi, Very interesting video and game! I loved getting some actual insight in your technical and artistic approach. It's a bit weird, but it works - and it's unique (which I think is getting more and more important in a world where Ai exists) Do you have some tips on creating devlog videos? I am planning on releasing my first one soon, but I rewrote the script like 4 times because I don't know what to include /prioritise.
@eastshadestudios83353 ай бұрын
Hey thanks for watching! Hah I've only made two now but yeah it's tough. What I do is just write down topics I have things to say about, then write a few paragraphs for each. Then I sort of mix and match the topics to create a video. One thing that helped me a lot is to completely detatch from the notion of showing actual recent dev progress. Traditionally a devlog is like a changelog of what's being worked on, but that's not a great style for youtube content. Think of the devlog as more like little essays about things that go into the game, at times even almost like pitching your game to people.

I have an important question are you working on eastshade for the PlayStation 5? I love playing this game on ps4 & loved speed running this too. If you do a remaster for ps5 that would be super awesome. 😎👍🏼

With your assets, do you use native Blender and Photoshop files in Unity? Or do you export FBX/PNG?

Hi Danny! The game is so whimsically beautifully! I wanted to ask, as someone with bad Carpal Tunnel, where hand pain constantly prevents me from playing so many games; I was wondering if we will be able to use custom keybinds, and particularly in regards to movement mechanics and actions, and will they be rekeybindable to both keyboard and mouse? (such as being able to hold R/Lmouse click for walking rather than wasd, or changing interact buttons or other things) Since keyboard movement and spread out button placements can be really painful for those of us with pain in our hands or other hand injuries, I know for me, it makes it so I cannot play quite a lot of games I'd like because the option just isnt there. Either because those buttons are locked or restricted to only the keyboard, or the mouse buttons are pre locked to abilities so they can't be remapped. Being able to rekeybind everything with use of the whole keyboard and mouse, makes gaming much less painful and just far more enjoyable since I'm not having to hold down multiple buttons, or stretch my fingers constantly to try and perform certain actions. I hope it will be an option, as I'm really looking forward to playing this, it just looks so magical! Thankyou for sharing this video with us! watching this evolve is wonderful!

Yes it will have remappable input!

I am a huge fan of indie games, especially the ones with unique art styles. I have a question about the clean look of your game. I know you can achieve some good lightning with baked GI and added post processing but most of the time, lightning in Unity turns out to be very harsh, boring, and not so clean. I prefer soft lighting, do you have any tips on how to achieve good lighting or can you talk with the example of Songs of Glimmerwick. Even a basic workflow explanation would help.

This reminds me so much of 'The Mystwick School of Musicraft' YA book series. More of a prequel from the looks of the era, kind of like the new Harry Potter game is to those books. Not a criticism btw, I'll be playing this one. Off to wishlist...

ll be in Early Access or full release? do u plan any demo comming out in this year? What games do you think are similar to yours? The first that comes to mind for me is Wytchwood
@eastshadestudios83353 ай бұрын
We don't plan on doing early access. I feel that would ruin a game like this for a lot of players. We're very much ivory tower style developers haha. We haven't announced any dates on demos or festivals. I absolutely loved Wytchwood! Not sure about similar games! I haven't found anything I thought was too similar!

Just have to make a game people want, looks at Palworld, yes, yes you do.

Hey, this video is a few months old so I’m not sure if you’re still replying to comments on here, but I have a question regarding scale/resolution of game assets. Wondering the approximate resolution you had to draw those massive buildings at? Love how detailed they look! Been trying to get more into pixel art to develop game assets as a lil project while I recover from a concussion. The thing is that I feel WAY more creative working in larger scales resolution but don’t want to have to manage thousands of pixels for every asset unless it’s needed to get this sort of detail. Thanks❤
@eastshadestudios8335Ай бұрын
Well our game isn't pixel art so I don't know how useful our benchmarks will be. Basically we always want more pixels than what the camera is rendering at. So if an interior fills up the screen left edge to right edge at the closest zoom level, we need that texture to be at least 1920 wide (or 2048). But it's more complicated than that. Our very large interiors use a lot of 3d parts and tiling textures (like we went into depth about in the interiors section). So the interior texture ends up being an atlas of different parts. So the required resolution just depends on how large the parts are in the interior. If it's helpful, our library atlas is 4096x2048, but only because the floors, walls, and trims are mostly 3d models with tiling textures. Some interiors have multiple atlases.

Do you know of any good tutorials or would you be willing to make a tutorial showing exactly how you do the projection in blender? I am slightly familiar with the process in blender but have not seen any updated tutorials.
@eastshadestudios83353 ай бұрын
There are definitely no tutorials for what I'm doing. It's a super weird niche thing. This video is kind of a tutorial on how to do it though. Just model a bit and then project UVs from camera. See how it goes then move stuff and reproject.

Impressive, are you using any addons in Blender for the mesh editing?
@eastshadestudios83353 ай бұрын
Thanks! No just vanilla blender 2.79. I did write a custom exporter to speed up the export process to Unity.
@seanbohan75433 ай бұрын
@@eastshadestudios8335 Oh ok, I still don't understand how did you edit the mesh and texture automatically updated.
@eastshadestudios83353 ай бұрын
@@seanbohan7543 that's the exporter I wrote. I just press a hotkey and it exports from blender and overwrites the mesh in the Unity project.

Some games will eventually lose all their peril, I remember thinking mobs in games like Minecraft or Terraria were a threat, but now-a-days I hardly ever think of them as anything but some more clicking I gotta do.

Choices matter? Multiple endings?

We have a few but not a ton of branching quests at the moment. There is a "true" ending but not multiple endings.

I'll give you the toughest question a game dev could ever face. What will you do if Songs of Glimmerwick fails to fund the next game?
@eastshadestudios83353 ай бұрын
We are very fortunate in that: With 85 thousand wishlists at this early stage of our marketing campaign it's highly unlikely to fail to that level. Our prelaunch statistical trajectory for this game is ten times Eastshade's. It would take something remarkable to defy the odds that much. But in that unlikely scenario we'd seek to partner with a publisher.

question: do you have a main target group for this game?
@graf_fridula39813 ай бұрын
Looks really cute! The only thing that I need an answer for is probably WHY YOU STILL USE BLENDER 2.7 OR STH??!😂
@eastshadestudios83353 ай бұрын
Thank you! Hah I use 2.79 because I wrote a custom exporter for it that I can't work without. 2.8 changed a bunch of APIs for the scripting and it's really not worth it for me to upgrade if I have to spend x work days rewriting my exporter.
@graf_fridula39813 ай бұрын
@@eastshadestudios8335 Ah, I imagined so. 😅 We have some custom addons in our studio as well. Luckily nothing big regarding those broke on upgrades however which means I can work with the newest versions of Blender😄
