Creating a UX Case Study: Right and Wrong Way to Approach It

When it comes to every portfolio I've reviewed in the past one clear theme that makes it or breaks it is if the UX designers approach the problems from the right place. In this video, I'll unpack a few thoughts on why setting your user research or UX design project from the start is critical to the UX case study outputs. The results are directly dependent on product or service designer mindset and framing, but can easily be optimised to focus on user experiences over product design.

Your insight is always so helpful! I'd love to see examples of a UX case study that represents process adjustments or non-digital solutions. When I started in Ux/UI training it seemed obvious that pain point identification and the solutions could be applied to any circumstance, not just digital design, but I haven't found examples of portfolios that showcase this.

He is absolutely right when it comes to companies being much more restrictive in terms of what they want. I remember I got my first graphic designer job and I thought I was gonna be creating super cool stuff, BOY was I wrong! All my super creative ideas were shot down in favor of more business practical stuff and I was thinking "But this is awesome". That was my first lesson working in design - The coolest looking thing isn't what everyone wants or needs.

Hi Vy! I'm Abegail, I have been watching a lot of your videos in the past couple months. I'm fairly new to learning UX. I recently just finished reading your book as well, I must say what an amazing book. Thank you for creating a book like that, it truly helped me understand what UX really is on a deeper level. i have thought about this... i do have a doubt though.... people usually defer to using app / website cause its easy to build(like hi-fidelity) and put it to test and iterate on it... whereas if we try to form solutions for lets a better way to measure BP, it we could do a thorough research on the exisitong product but would never be able to actual see if the solutions work.... Am i missing out on something.?

How do i do UX if a brief i have been given tells me the solution before there's any research? Do i just supply the client with what he/she asked for or combat the brief with evidence to suggest its not even a good idea? Im speaking hypothetically because my only access to design briefs are from online generators and examples.

As many things in UX, it depends. Usually, you always need to fight for the user at the stakeholder. If there is somehow a time limit or some other urgent reason, you need to ask yourself, how you can elaborate the learning the stakeholders needs to do, so they understands that research is fundamental to your work. e.g. you could start with a model of the solution they asked for - then evaluate it together to show, what assumptions are wrong or what you need to know more to get a better solution. Also, you can always research by yourself and show alternatives. You also need to ask yourself, why the stakeholder thinks that the solutions he offers is a good one, where he comes from and what goal he has and which problem he wants to solve with his solution. If you understand him, you also will understand how you can get support by them. There is so much more to this and no predifined normed way to this.

This is a big and very important topic that I'll cover in the near future. Azzo answer is spot on though - you always need to question the nature of that brief and how that decision was made. There might be existing evidence or lack of it, either way putting on a detective had you'll discover new information that will help to either pivot the scope or come up with much better solution (even if it's the app they asked for in the beginning)
