My experience with gardening; I live in the countryside on acreage. Every living thing is continuously Scavenging for food. For example Coyotes eat the apples off my trees, birds can strip my peaches in the matter of 2 days. Birds squirrels gophers etc can strip a garden in one night, these Little Miracles of nature, know exactly when to harvest your hard work. Over a period of years, I've learned that composting soil and adjusting pH of water for different types of fruits and vegetables (which I grow in bags sitting on top of chicken wire) in a completely screened in area, and a Greenhouse, is the only way that I can safely and reliably produce food for myself and family. Bottom line: saving seeds for "ready comes the day" is a gardening death sentence. Start now, fail now, learn from your mistakes, when it will not cost you your life.

Agree on that, I plant a test garden every year, we have learned tons of stuff on what grows what does not, we have baby rabbits all over we have to protect the plants from, certain bugs out here in the desert to watch for. Its amazing how much you learn just planting a garden of different stuff every year. For some off reason Corn, Peppers and Zucchini grow like mad out here, while tomatoes do not do as well. I have planted potato and they do very well too.

Ken Olson True, True, True. People tell me I have a green thumb. Ha!. If they only knew how much I've failed and continue to fail to this day at producing anything from a garden. Seeds will not magically produce food, let alone an abundance of it. More often than not, it will fail to produce as you expect, or will die without proper attentive gardening. People think dirt water and sunlight is all you need, as you know thats so far from the truth.

Iridium242 for the rabbits you could grow / raise them as a source of meat or sell the meat to a restaurant that would like to buy them. A good place to get good advice on grownig / raising rabbits is www.backwoodshome.com , I enjoy reading it and learn a lot from the magazine. As for the garden part, I agree completely, practice now when everything is fine so that you get your garden / green house going and know what to do. Again thanks for a great video.

Planted sunflower seeds in early June. Then it rained heavily for six weeks, then we had drought like conditions. Three flowers came up and one is almost seven feet high -don't know if we'll get bloons and seed heads as late in the year as it is. Gardening is an adventure.

So true. Several years ago I tried growing some of the heritage seeds I bought and it was a total disaster. Rabbits consumed all my strawberries, the tomatoes didn't grow, peas were a flop, etc. Anyone that thinks they can just go outside, toss some seeds around, and end up with a fabulous bounty of food is in for a rude awakening.

My old man always kept the pantry super stocked up. He was a depression boy and knew hard times. One time he was laid off 3 months in our company town. But because my old man kept a year's supply of food and ahead in rent. We had no problems. I remember as a little boy neighbor would come over with their sad stories of not being ready. It doesn't take much for everything to fall apart. Its something the Mormons practice as well. I never could forget that and become antsy if my pantry or savings run low.

You know what's always amazed me about this whole topic? Not to long ago, say in my grandpa's time (I am 40 this year in 2020), it was common to have some mason jars of "canned" goods, and other nonperishables due to the "hard times" possibility. They all lived through it. But today, for some reason, "prepper" has become an epithet and if you tell people you are prepared, you are a social pariah. It's strange.

I am in Venezuela... I can tell you in ORDER things that DISAPEAR ALMOST OVERNIGHT, I DO MEAN THIS ORDER... I MAY FORGET SOME THINGS, BUT THESE ONES ARE THE TOP... 1. COOKING OIL AND SUGAR 2. BABY FORMULA AND DIAPERS (PEOPLE WILL KILL FOR THOSE, WILL FIGHT FOR THOSE, WILL GET YOU/DRAG YOU INTO HELL TO GET THOSE, SPECIALLY THE ONES FOR PREMATURE, SOY BASE ONE, ETC.) 3. BUTTER COFFEE AND TOILET PAPER 4. ANTIBIOTICS 5. ANTIACIDS AND ANTIALLERGY MEDICATION (I STILL HAVE HARD TIME GETTING THOSE) 6. BOTTLE WATER AND SODAS (COKE, PEPSI, ETC.) ALONG WITH DENTAL FLOSS (THIS ONE I HAVE NOT SEEN IN MONTHS) AND TOOTHPASTE 7. LAUNDRY SOAP. JUST LAUNDRY AND FABRIC SOFTENER 8. GAS FOR COOKING. 9. OIL FOR THE CARS (ALL KINDS) 10. BATTERIES FOR THE CARS (THIS ONE WILL BE STOLEN AT ALL TIMES UNDER ALL CIRCUMSTANCE) 11. SUTURE KITS (EVEN IN PRIVATE CLINICS, YOU WILL DIE BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING TO CLOSE THE WOUNDS WITH!!!!) SO BEFORE BUYING ANYTHING MEDICAL, GET THOSE!!!!! 12. PAIN MEDICATION (BUT THIS ONE, MOST PEOPLE WILL GET NATURAL MEDICINE THAT WORKS, YOU MAY NOT NEED THIS ONE) 13. EMERGENCY GENERATORS (THE SMALL ONE HERE SELLS FOR MINIMUN 1000 DOLLARS AND SOMETIMES EVEN MORE....!!!!) 14. SANITARY PADS AND WATER PURIFICATION TABLETS 15. BATTERIES, FLASHLIGHTS, EXTERNAL BATTERIES FOR CELL PHONES... STUFF LIKE THAT.. this one will NOT matter at first, but when there is the first blackout, you either got it before, or you will have to pay 20 times more to get one now... 16. medical pads and bandaids... and the needle for injections and stuff like that... It took me nearly 2 years to see a pill cutter again... those things will go quite bad when one person gets sick in the family and then EVERYONE WILL PANICK and get ALL of those ANYWHERE they go... THIS INCLUDES DISPOSABLE GLOVES, YOU NEED TO GET AT LEAST 200 PAIRS BECAUSE NO DOCTOR WILL TAKE A LOOK AT YOU IF YOU DO NOT BRING THOSE TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM. SORRY, THEY WILL NOT EXPOSE THEMSELVES FOR ANYONE AND THAT ONE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ITEM YOU HAVE TO CARRY WITH YOU IN YOUR WALLET AT ALL TIMES... Again, this one will take a bit longer to happen, but IT WILL HAPPEN... SO GET THEM!!! After a while, then you can start looking for all the other stuff... like vinegars, mayo, bread, flours, etc... You WILL be able to get those and even can food... There is TOO MANY people that will make a business selling stuff and getting it from other countries or whatever... But those I mentioned... hell, those are the biggest ones that I can think of... MOST PEOPLE will NOT buy deodorant or whatever... That one, REALITY, it does matter, but people will overlook that one and would prefer sugar, salt, certain spices, OIL and butter above those things). Mostly because if you are going to use soap and deodorant and stuff like that, you have to SHOWER and quite honestly, THERE IS NOT ENOUGH WATER FOR COOKING OR DRINKING, LET ALONE SHOWER... SORRY... 90 % OF THE PEOPLE WILL BE DIRTY AT ALL TIMES... AND WOULD RATHER just clean themselves a little bit more with a small towel or whatever... if you did not get TOOLS BEFORE this happened... SORRY, THERE IS ALMOST NO WAY IN HELL YOU CAN GET ONE NOW. If you want to get clothing... You either have to be rich or... die naked. If you want to drink coffee.. Either plant it or... get rich trying to get that one... If you want gas for cooking... SORRY, GET WOOD OUTSIDE AND GET A NEW KITCHEN WHILE YOU ARE AT IT (MOST PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE BARBECUE STUFF ESPECIALLY BECAUSE THEY LIVE IN APARTMENTS)

When hurricane Sandy hit I was watching TV and saw a line of people waiting to get gasoline. It suddenly dawned on me if I needed to get 1-2 gallons of gas in a rationing situation I didn't have a jerry can. So I went out and bought two 1 gallon cans and leave on in my car at all times and the other in the garage. Moral of the story is everytime there is a natural disaster watch the news and see if there is something your missing or didnt think about.

ClearSmashDrop you could also make a habit to always top up your tank when it reaches half full so if you can't fill up you cans - I would keep the home full (5gallon would be better) and then fill up the one in car when needed. You may want to have two sets, one set for gas - Red - the other set - Yellow - for water. What do you think, just my opinion.

I bought two gallon containers, five of them, and filled them with gasoline, 10 gallons worth, the first season after our area was hit with several huge tornados. I rotated it out. When they had sat for three months, I would use the gasoline in one of our cars and refill the cans with fresh gasoline.I have let that system lapse with time because everyone who needed gasoline and was low on money would use it without refilling the can. Gasoline was almost $3.00 per gallon, so it became really expensive to keep up. This taught me another lesson, don’t let anyone know what your preps are or where you keep them. I have filled emergency grocery sacks for many people over the years but with family members, who are always broke, it gets to be a crutch. It only takes one extra family using without replacing to deplete a supply in a hurry! One lesson learned twice! Keep your supple secret, but keep prepping!

What I know from my parents and grandparents, it is always handy to get something you need +1. Because, in 1991 soviet union stopped existing and my country, Georgia, wasn't fully established yet, so basic stuff like soap, toilet paper, shampoo ect. simply vanished, because nothing was coming into the newly created republic. Everyone who had bulk of anything, were living way better than anyone else. Well, than that bulk dissapeared as well because one war and one civil war followed it, so 90s were disaster in general, but such bulked-up items came in very handy and they teach me to get something extra every time I buy anything. Plus there was panic about supplies as well in 2008 during the 5 day war.

Yes, that was something that helped us too in Venezuela, while in good times we could buy in bulk, made last that for year: toilet paper, shampoo, liquid soap (can be much better dosified and last much longer than bar soaps), candles, pasta, flour, cornmeal, sugar and cooking oil. But communist mess lasted longer than what we expected (still is!) and corrupted mafias seized the production means.

I take a lot of medications and I keep extras as much as possible. Ask you doctor to let you get extra by increasing your dosage. Don't let it get out of date. Rotate it carefully but do have extra. It is one of the first things people run out of. In case of desperation when you know you can't live without a medication, tell the pharmacist you are going on vacation so you can get extras. If we can use cloth nappies for babies we can use pieces of cloth for adults to wipe their bums. Cut up pieces of cotton material like old t-shirts or worn out flannelette sheets, any material that is soft and absorbent. Then rinse them off after use then boil them up in water at the end of the day. Place in the pot a small cotton bag of pine needles or pine bark or lavender flowers or lemon peel or orange peel or eucalyptus leaves etc into the pot as well to help sanitise the pieces of cloth. Hang them out dry and then reuse. Along with having a water bottle beside the toilet to put water on the pieces of cloth which is like using a baby wipe on your bum. It is cost effective and will last way longer than toilet paper and you don't need all the storage space as you would for lots of toilet paper. ;-)

It's crazy that people think we're crazy. Debt can't keep climbing and every expert says the economy is going to crash and it'll be the worst crash. Now it's hitting Turkey, then Canada will follow shortly behind. The snow ball had started rolling and it will pick up speed. The heart breaking thing for us is we know there's not much time and we'll never have enough supplies. People will look to us for supplies and it'll be hard to turn them away.

Start a small garden to supplement your food supply and its also self regenerating with the food waste turned to compost to be used to enrich your soil. You will notice most of these food issues happened gradually and not just over night so building a garden allows you to buffer the shortage that will come when the dollar dies which will usher shortages.

I keep fabuloso around. Not only for cleaning, but you can do laundry with it, and in a pinch, dishes. I get it by the gallon. Same with vinegar and baking soda, both of which have multiple uses. I keep multiples of everything, although I’m not as far ahead as I’d like to be. Mail order pharmacies are good for getting several months ahead on meds. Then reorder every time they say you can, and soon you can have a stock built up, because they let you reorder a 3 month supply a month ahead. There are also a lot of supplements that can augment, or even replace to a certain extent some meds, but get off all the meds you possibly can-they are terrible for you.

I was surprised at how unprepared some of them were - and what was in some kits. What to do first - shelter of fire - some didn't have a plan set in their head what to do. Some of the equipment wasn't suited for the environment which was BC with snow on the ground. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5OXhnujidueq9E For food, get started building a pantry and stocking it, for a survival kit think about what is needed - what seanon, build it and test it out in as real a situation as you can and see how you do. I am not gong to sit here and say 'Huh, I could survive that with what I have', not unless I have tried it out first.

In regards to the buy antibiotics and stuff to heal infections etc. A good piece of advice is to constantly expose yourself to stuff ... don't disinfect as soon as you get a cut or something, let it fester a little then treat it. What you need to do is build up your body's natural immune system !! If you're made of glass and have never been exposed to stones, you're bound to break from the first one that get's thrown. Let fevers run their course, just don't hang around other people while you're sick, but let your body become naturally more resistant to infections. I'm in the building industry, I get cuts and stuff, never wash my hands before eating at lunch time ... and guess what, I'm never on sick leave. I always fall sick, but it never affects me like it does everyone else, I'll feel bad or weak for a day then be perfectly fine the next, because I'm not made of glass. Obviously, don't be retarded, treat yourself if you know it's gonna seriously fuck you up or if you've never encountered it.

Agree on that. The antibiotics are more for life threatening stuff, not your average bug as I am the same way, if I get a cold I just keep on going and by the next day I am fine. Fels naptha is a really great item to stock. As a personal choice I use a hand crank washing machine from the laundry alternative and a small spin dryer before line drying, to clean our clothes. It's been two years and I'm still using the five gallon bucket of laundry soap I made using the fels naptha. For those interested the recipe I used to make the soap is: one bar fels naptha grated, 1cup borax and 1 cup washing soda. Melted together on the stove with one gallon of water at low heat and poured into the bucket that's been filled 3/4 of the way with warm water. Stir until mixed and let sit overnight. It's a silly looking gel when ready but it gets clothes clean for pennies. :) I use two tbsp. per load of washing.

Stock up on traps for small animals that devour one's food crops. But, if you catch a pair (1 male and 1 female), especially rabbits. Given enough time, you will have a source of protein. Plus, their skin and fur can be fashioned into ear muffs and other clothing to stave off harsh winter weather. Also, two birds in a cage might be worth future eggs in a skillet. If you plan on capturing any, make sure you grow the type of food they will eat and that will grow in your zone. And remember that egg shells are very beneficial for any living thing that needs calcium.
