Hey! thanks for a great tutorial! I am trying to achieve an extra layer of watercolour realism and I wonder if you could help because I am stuck. I have scenes with multiple objects, all of which have watercolour shaders. I would like for the object colour to blend with another object's colour when one is in front of the other (real-time). In a similar way that an artist paints something red, and makes another pass with blue and the area onto which both red and blue have been painted becomes purple. Do you think it's achievable in Eevee? I have asked this question on blender stack exchange (watercolour shader) with a reference image which I can't post here..
@SinestesiaCo3 жыл бұрын
Hey Demetris, I get what you're saying. I haven't tested this, but it _might_ be possible using a refraction or glass BSDF with a shader-to-rgb node. You probably want to use a fresnel/layer weight node as a mask so it's only in the borders. The glass node would allow you to pick up what's around the object so you can then blend it in. It does sound like something that would be easier to do with OpenGL shaders
@demetrisktorides3 жыл бұрын
@@SinestesiaCo Hi Diego! thanks for the reply:) I have been trying with glass nodes but it was fruitless - but - haven't adopted the shader to rgb node! thanks so much the guidance. I'll try and see:)

@@demetrisktorides Hello! I'm curious whether it worked because I'm facing the same issue as you do? And could you, please, provide how did you solve this? Thank you in advance!
@robertplishka24482 жыл бұрын
I've figured that out just alright. I've included that default grouped PaperTexture into my custom "bubble" shader, which has Transparent and Glass BSDFs in it that are mixed with the RGB node and connected to the Emission node. Just remember to enable the Screen Space Reflections in Render Properties window with Refractiions inside. And the you could play with the sliders to your likening. Switching on the Screen Space Reflections in the Material Properties Settings window is the next most important part. If you happen to find some difficulties with transparency try toggling the Alpha Blend option in the Blend Mode dropbox there. Hope it helped!

Made me think a whole new way.. I wish I could understand what you said at 3:45 'make the colours xxx between dark and bright'? BTW, could be wrong.. noise is expensive... why use the Fac output from 3 Noise nodes, instead of the Color output from 1?
@SinestesiaCo3 жыл бұрын
Ah sorry, I'm still working on my pronunciation. What I said is to make the colors zig-zag between dark and bright. Using a noise for each axis gives you more flexibility. I think 3D noise isn't that expensive but it depends on your GPU. If you were using UVs as texture coordinates you could also drop to 2D noise. Using a single color output would be a nice optimization though

I think this video is one of the best tutorials I have ever seen. However, there are three things I don't understand because I don't understand English very well and my knowledge of Blender is limited. Can anyone give me some advice? 2:18 Why did he use Fresnel instead of Facing in Layer Weight? Is Fresnel a more natural and common expression? 2:30 Why did he connect the Noise Textures as a Vector to the Layer Weight? Is it to change the way the noise looks depending on the angle from which the rose is viewed? 2:30 He has set the XYZ axis in Combine XYZ, but when I changes the scale of each Noise, they seem to expand and contract in the same direction. If I change the scale of Noise for the X axis, doesn't that mean that the texture moves in the X axis direction? I learned about Vectors in math, but how should I interpret the Vector this time? And how is XYZ different from each other? I seem to have a poor understanding of Vector. Sorry for the long post.
@SinestesiaCo2 жыл бұрын
Hi, 1. I can't remember exactly why, but I think it just looked better :) 2. The noise textures distort the normals the layer weight node sees. 3. The vector is going into the normals socket, so it's not the same as plugging into another texture's Vector. Vectors in this context represent points in space. Well actually lots of points, since the node network is run for each point found by the ray tracer. If you want to get a better feel for "cycles math" read up an intro to ray tracers. I'm not sure what you mean by "how is XYZ different from each other"? Cheers!
@SOL-t8h2 жыл бұрын
@@SinestesiaCo Thanks for the quick reply! Thanks to you, I understand the general idea. 2. Layer Weight means that the appearance changes with the normals, right? I learned that the appearance changes depending on the direction of the surface, but I didn't learn enough about how the appearance changes depending on the direction of the normals. 3. As you said, I was wrong in my interpretation of Vector and Combine XYZ. The Noise Texture creates a value for each point in space. Connecting three Noise Textures to Combine XYZ is the same as assigning the values of the three patterns to XYZ. Each point has a normal in the coordinate (X,Y,Z) direction, assuming that its position is at the origin (0,0,0). Is this a correct interpretation? Also, I am going to study "Cycles Math" and "Ray Tracer". Thank you for giving me the opportunity to learn. Don't worry about "how is XYZ different from each other?", it's my mistake.

Excuse me, why can I only use eevee to render, and how can I understand what I can only use eevee to render or cycles
@SinestesiaCo3 жыл бұрын
Hi, we use the "shader-to-rgb node" in this material to modify the output of one of the shaders. This node isn't available to Cycles because it's a ray tracer. It's a little long to explain all of it here, but google "Ray Tracing" and "Raster Engine" to get an idea. Eevee is closer to what game engines do, while Cycles uses a different method that is slower but more physically accurate.

One of my favorite shaders ever!!! It's so pretty! I just have one question, it seems any new material like Principled BDSF just makes them completely black and the only way to change it's color is by moving Emision, but other than that it stays black. Same with transparency, I can't seem to get it right, is this because of the lights?
@SinestesiaCo2 жыл бұрын
Hi, yeah the idea of the shader is to hack around the lighting system. The lightiing is "calculated" in the material, using emission is just a way to put that on the object without it being affected directly by the lights (an emission of 1 works like a flat shader).
@vinjass2 жыл бұрын
@@SinestesiaCo Aah I see! Makes sense! Would it be possible then to put some objects with a different material in the same scene then? Or put a watercolor shader into an object in a different scene, like a character made of watercolor but the rest of the scene is made with realistic materials.

Hi Diego,Is the final watercolor effect of the film also made by Blender? Can you roughly describe how it is done?
@SinestesiaCo4 жыл бұрын
Hi Raymond, yes everything is done in Blender (rendered in Eevee) with no post-processing. I'm guessing by film you mean the paper texture? The paper texture uses the Window coordinates which are a projection of the viewport in 2D, so no matter the object or the world they are always the same. By mixing in that texture with the "paint" part of the shader, you get the illusion that the object is painted on top of the paper and is letting some of that texture show in lighter areas.
