I forgot to ask. Do you normally sand the top to 150, 180, 220 with whitewashing?. I want it to soak in, but also LOVE a good buttery smooth surface. I’ve been sanding with a 229 sponge lightly after I whitewash, too before my topcoat.

I love your videos, they are so clear to understand and help me so much, I’m relatively new to furniture painting, I’ve done about 5 pieces so far. I want to try a paint was with fusion paints that looks like the pottery barn weathered gray. I am doing this on an oak tabletop that is completely stripped to bare wood. Have you ever done this? If so, do you have any advice before I start? Thanks!
@BorninaBarnBoutique

Thank you so much! I have many many times. That’s a vey perfectly imperfect look. I have another video on here creating that weathered restoration hardware look. It can be achieved with many different products, paints, ga ones and stains. So just choose your product of choice and have fun

Thank you, I just did this on a mahogany piece, no issues. Sanded to bare wood and did this exact same process, the taupe color helped neutralize the tone of the wood. Had no bleed through.

@borninabarnboutique I love this painting technique, does the General Finishes top coat have a strong odor? I have used another one of their top coats in the past and it was very strong. I’m sensitive to scents.

Their water based does not to me, but I do wear a respirator when applying. Their oil based does have a strong smell, but his one is not bad in my opinion.

I've been trying toearn how to do this for almost 8 hours online and was just about to give up, BUT THEN I came across YOUR videos!! Quick question...in order to make sure I see ALL of the furnitures original grain pattern, how much sanding and with which grit do I use (and do I use more than one or)? Again, I cannot thank YOU ENOUGH for the videos!! They are to the point and actually helpful, unlike most that leave me even more confused and questioning what to do!! Lol

Love this look! I have a veneer oak table which I accidentally blew through the veneer when sanding - nickel size spot- what do you recommend filling this with so I can then use this staining technique?
@BorninaBarnBoutique
@BorninaBarnBoutique 3 жыл бұрын
This is pretty sheer like stain, unless you build it up and do many layers then you would not see the filled area, so it just depends on how heavy you go and how many layers - I would recommend less water more paint in your wash if you are trying to cover up!

Love your video and style. I want to work this on a dark-wood with finish. So, I will have to sand down to wood, yes? Should I invest in a sander, then? Would hand sand just not get it up well enough? None of my pieces I want to make over are bare wood, unfortunately. I am not the strongest (or youngest) person in the world, and I wonder if I can do the job of sanding without some kind of mechanized sander. Any suggestions? So glad I found your channel !!

It's best to do this look on a bare wood piece for the best results. So yes and I would invest in an orbital sander (Dewalt Orbital - you can find them between $59-69). I think you could hand sand, but it will be a lot more work and take much longer and more effort. I am so glad you found me too! Thank you for watching!

Would you do this type of finish always w paint vs layering with stains, i.e Fusion stains or General Finishes Gel Stain?
@BorninaBarnBoutique
@BorninaBarnBoutique 3 жыл бұрын
Layering a wash Is easier to work with. Stains set really fast and be hard to achieve the same look. Gel stain doesn’t penetrate the wood like regular stain and is thicker. Fusion stain and finishing oil layers and blends nicely, I have a video on here using it - just a different t look.
