Getting online can give people access to science, technology, and the world of ideas. Over a billion people in the world have some kind of disability-but we’re still putting barriers in front of them in the online world. Inclusive design allows us to design better technologies that everyone can use.
Judy Brewer works on accessibility of the digital world at the World Wide Web Consortium’s Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI). The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines provide accessibility guidance for the web, on descriptions for images and video, captions for audio, interoperability for speech recognition, and sites that are easier to learn for people with cognitive disabilities. Accessibility is also important for mobile phones, digital books, online games, telepresence robots, virtual reality and more.
An international community of people working on digital accessibility is improving awareness, rights, and resources for accessibility. Accessibility is now recognized as part of corporate social responsibility and as an innovation driver; and these changes are contributing to improvements in products and services.
But we need many more hands at the table, on everything from accessibility of town websites to leveraging machine learning. Learn more about this talk, and join us in building an accessible digital future at w3.org/WAI/ Director of the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. This is a wonderful presentation with a speaker full of passion about accessibility in tech. TEDx, why is this video and many of your videos not closed captioned? This is exactly the issue that Ms. Brewer is speaking about.

You mean other than the auto-generated captions? Because the video has those, at least for me, but it would be nice to have better captions, the auto-generated ones aren't the best.

The video now has closed captions other than the auto-generated ones, but the punctuation is missing and the separation into subtitle blocks could be much improved.

Captions? Without them this isn’t an accessible video. Auto generated are bad.

TED has captions and transcripts in multiple languages on their website. KZbin not always allows for it and I am unsure if the TEDx Talks channel is managed the same as the TED Talks channel

@@sanxi34 KZbin certainly has the ability to display closed captions. It's up to the channel owner (TEDx) to upload the captions.

Since I'm old enough to know things before the internet this should already happen but the same people that always promote this with the corporations or Technologies are the same people that will deny you! These type of Technologies are never meant to help the user it's only in the benefit of the abuser!

Tools and technology is made accessible to everyone regardless of their abilities. It opens up possibilities to become successful without the sting of being inconvenienced.

I don't understand the awareness problem. I've been a developer for 15 years and I was taught about accessibility rules from my first day at work. It's built into the laws of every EU country. It doesn't matter is the average layman knows the rules as long as the developers building the websites know them.

It's kind of opposite in my country. In Indonesia, there are no accessibility rules for digital platform. So in the end, it depends on whether the company or stakeholders of the product want to implement the rules or not (which, sadly, not many of them have interest to make it mandatory).

@@tsukishiro31 I'm sure in some places they aren't taken seriously. Many western countries barely care. Some don't even really reach the legal limit. Just well enough to pretend they care. But my issue isn't with pushing for this standards. I do it myself a lot. It's just that awareness isn't usually the issue. It's the age old issue of spending a big portion of budget on a small proportion of users. We need to find a way around that
