I think many have come across the phrase: "There are three things you can watch forever: fire, water, and other people's work." Usually this phrase is used in a bad context, like those who watch from the outside are lazy people :/ In my case, the context is extremely positive, since I would use this phrase with a slight change: "...fire, water, and the creativity of other people." Truly, the creativity of people who dedicate themselves to creating something that touches the strings of our souls to the depths is incomparable! I am very grateful to you for this little journey, thank you!

There's a good trick for clean traditional lettering from Soviet poster artists (and probably a bunch of other people, it's just where I personally know about it). Instead of going with ink and a flat nib from the very beginning, you can tie two pencils to each other with a rubber band and use the resulting instrument as if it was a flat nib pen for nice clean eraseable outlines of the letter. It maybe a little too big with pencils of average thickness though, but still, I think it's a neat trick that could be helpful.
@JGVIllustrations2 ай бұрын
Wow what a neat trick!!! I will have to try it even for drawing parallel lines in the comic. Thanks so much for watching and for the tip!

I really enjoyed watching this and I love your drawings. Everyone has their own process that they get comfortable with I guess but I couldn't help thinking that you've made it really hard for yourself. What I mean is, have you considered reversing your process? Do all of the laborious stuff digitally (The design, the rough drawings the corrections) print it at low opacity on to a good quality paper. Do finished pencils over the top and then paint it traditionally with watercolor and gouache. I just find that working that way is not just faster, it's actually fun, and best of all you have a physical piece of original art at the end of the day. I'd do the same with the lettering, use a computer font and then draw over it for a more organic feel.
@JGVIllustrations22 күн бұрын
You're totally right! The process can be changed :) My strengths are draftsmanship and they excel best drawing by hand on real paper. It's just not the same to sketch on a digital tablet. I tried sketching and drawing this comic digitally first and the panels and even thumbnails came out stiff and lifeless. As for painting with real watercolor and gouache, I really want to but I'm absolutely terrified. However, it is on my to do list I just haven't figured out a way to incorporate a habitual practice of painting, that's why I lean on coloring things digitally, that undo button is my crutch. As for the lettering, even if you use a computer font, trying to draw over it with real ink and a calligraphy pen...it won't come out clean--if you don't understand how ink pools with each stroke, that there is a specific order each letter is drawn in, they won't come out nice and you'll still need to edit digitally. Ultimately, I do what I do in terms of how much "practice" and hours I've put into each discipline, and I correct where my skills aren't as good (coloring and editing). But I think it's really good to assess one's process every once in a while and also push oneself to try things beyond comfort zones. I will take your suggestions in mind, I would love to have an original, colored art piece too I need to work my courage up. ❤️ Thank you for your thoughts and encouragement!

Nice work. I'm prob a bit too late in the process, and perhaps this is something you considered and just decided against for one reason or another, but one small critique that came to mind was the shape of your breastplate armor. If you notice in your reference book, a lot of the armor would have very exaggerated chests, with thin waist regions etc. Essentially what they were doing with medieval armor was creating very round armor with acute, sloping angles, in order to maximized the deflection of the force of the weapons striking them. Where as your armor designs feature relatively flat chest plates that wouldn't provide much protection in this manner, whatsoever. Its not a huge deal as youre far from the first artist to do this. Its quite ubiquitous and usually one of the things designers either get wrong or decide to change for x or y reason. But I figured I'd point it out anyways just in case you were going for some level of historical accuracy.
@JGVIllustrations2 ай бұрын
Not at all! I can definitely go in and make that adjustment---I completely agree and it was a detail that just fell through in the process. Next time I use this illustration I will go in and adjust their chests. Thank you for noticing that and for taking the time to let me know. As a fellow history nerd, I highly appreciate it, haha

this looks amazing!!!! as a person who draws myself and as everybody can see, even if it is just a page takes forever when you really care about what you are doing!!!!!! great job!!!!!!! a little observation tho, most characters are walking with the left leg forward and it looks too even, robotic in some kinda weird way in my mind. Next time you have a bunch of characters make them slightly different doing the actions they are doing at that moment. I know there are a lot of things in your head you are focusing on, and this looks like a trivial thing that anybody can miss, but it will make it more pleasant to the eye i think. hope i did explain this properly. lol
