I have had an online business for 15 years, making the same things and every now and then adding a new category. But I shut my online store down over a year ago because I wanna rebrand. It’s not easy to do but I feel like it’s going to be worth it for me, I want to be able to do 2 to 3 things perfectly instead of 100 things where I’m all over the place I enjoyed this video you put me on the right track of which way I want to go watching the pouring process how the wicks were set all of the stuff that goes into it I’m sure didn’t just happen every night. Good luck with your new rebrand or I should say I hope you’re new brand excels for you.

Erica, I would be so, so incredibly grateful if you could make a video about how to identify your target market! That one thing alone has been the only thing holding me back from getting into candlemaking and eventually starting a business, as I have absolutely no idea how to go about doing that. I just graduated college a few months ago, and right before I graduated I made wax melts for the first time following your instructions and sold them at a holiday market on campus (no business license necessary) and they sold really well! I really enjoyed making them too. I have just been so scared to invest all of the time and money into starting a business without knowing how to differentiate myself from every other candlemaker out there. If I had the tools to do that it would give me hope that I could make it as a business! Thank you for reading my ramblings :)

Target market is just a fancy way of talking about the person you imagine buying your products. When you have a specific type of person in mind, it affects the choices you make when building your product. For example, is your target market little ol church ladies? Or earthy crunchy granola types who live in a van down by the river? Each of these people would be attracted to different scents, different packaging, etc. They may be more eco conscious or just really want pretty floral packaging, etc. Picturing this potential customer in your head as you’re sorting out your product line and branding is really all that’s meant by target market. It helps you bring a personality to your brand. It also informs a lot how and where you advertise. Moms groups on Facebook? Eco lifestyle blogs? Etc.

It’s interesting to see this. I’m beginning my candle business and I’ve created 30 different scents to survey people and see what people like the most. It took a lot to make 30 different scents but I believe it’ll be worth it in the long run.

The statement of making or not making certain items of the makers liking… that was my struggle! I don’t like a certain scent, but customers ask for it and it sells out! I had to focus on some of what customers like versus all about me.

i have a question..what if our target market doesn’t necessarily live around us but we plan to sell online and at in person markets? I’m struggling on whether to compromise aesthetics that may off put the average customer where i live. for example, if my target customer is a well traveled hippie but i live around more traditional people. i dont think they will want exotic or foreign inspired scents

You are so right about candle businesses that have fallen off since 2020. One of them is particularly irritating because I want the business name…but alas, I changed my business name

Never think of yourself. Ive made scents that made me want to throw up, doesnt matter, he/she likes it. Secondly, who knows what people like, if you try to guess, 99.9% of the time you are wrong. Thirdly, no matter the scent, the hardest part is the customer cant smell them. Wotking on a scratch and sniff screen. Ok, thats a lie. Lastly, the candle business is expected to grow through 2025.

I just hate candles that are not full. I refuse to buy candles 3/4 full.
@MemoryBoxCandleCo2 ай бұрын
@@SophiaRoseApothecary are you referring to the way we fill our candles?
@SophiaRoseApothecary2 ай бұрын
@ yes, most independent candle makers leave 3/4 open. It is not visually appealing especially next to candles in retail that fill almost to the top. I really noticed this over the last 2 years when I started looking at candles in stores versus candles sold online.
@MemoryBoxCandleCo2 ай бұрын
@ the reason we fill ours to the level we do is to leave room for the wick length and the internal lid. I don’t want to smash everything down.
@MollyDeLong26 күн бұрын
There has to be room at the top in order to create the heat needed to burn a full melt pool across the top so it won't tunnel. Any experienced candlemaker would not fill it to the top. It's not that we're trying to short you. We're trying to facilitate a proper burn.
@SophiaRoseApothecary20 күн бұрын
@ incorrect. I use Amber straight sided jars and there is maybe 1/4th of an inch of space. Plus, I can EASILY post 10-15 candle brands that fill their candles to 1/4”. I am an experienced chandler which is why I know you’re lying!
