What I like about these tutorials is that they are all about the camera. There are some great photographers on KZbin but they all focus on how they do post production. Nobody talks about how they expose and what equipment they use apart from Bryan. Thank you so much!!

Great stuff. Need to read his book to better understand all the technical and practical sides of flash photgraphy. Stiil it remains great to see what Bryan can achieve here. Would the background be even blacker with a higher speed say 1/500 th sec? Cheers, Bruno

Awesome job as always Bryan. You are cool. Could you make video to show how to get colorful (only green, yellow) or two color background please.

@DCuerpoJr13 жыл бұрын
@Exupery1976 You're not directly metering through the lens (TTL), so the infrared metering system on the flash itself can inform you the appropriate exposure based on the distance and power setting you set.

@BrunoCoutant They would, but then you get into flash sync speed (which is how long it takes for the signal that the shutter is released to reach the flash) problems which means that your flash doesn't go off in time.

Nice photo technique, but can’t seem to duplicate with my SB600…..no matter the settings! Unfortunately, the SB900 has been discontinued by Nikon and their replacement is way off the charts in costs. Is there another way to achived this affect sir?

Bryan didn't mention maximum flash sync. Not all cameras will go to 1/250. Therefore, to obtain maximum effect on some bodies you may need to find a background that is in shade (darker), use an ND filter (along with max sync), or shoot later in the day when the light is lower. Simply depends on the situation. And agree about the video quality. Don't know who shot this, but they needed to probably reposition to loose the lens flare, as well as clean the lens.
@AlmightyUniden12 жыл бұрын
ISO you choose doesn't really matter here, just don't put it in auto so the camera doesn't compensate automatically. It was pretty sunny outside so I guess it was set between 100-300.
@pjos11113 жыл бұрын
Why does he use F22? Surely that setting would be to get foreground to background in focus?
11 жыл бұрын
The closer you get... The shallower the DOF is... it Is a macro lens... he is very close, so even at small apertures, is going to blow the background.
@anzaeria8 жыл бұрын
I tried the same thing with a cactus recently (using off camera flash) - prior to watching your video. I too was aiming to get a black background. Unfortunately, my background was too close to the subject. Even though I placed black card on the background, I didn't get a deep black. More of a very light black probably due to spillage from the flash. Unfortunately, all the cacti around here have other plants and things in close proximity so hard to get more distance. Will have to try and darken the background with Photoshop.

@pjos111 he's not doing it for the background to be in focus, but to force the ambient light out of the photo. By manually selecting (in manual mode) a small aperture (F22) and relatively small exposure time (1/250) only the objects lit by the stronger light from the flash get captured. As Bryan said,if you are using Aperture priority on your camera instead of Manual mode and select F22,the camera will compute a long exposure time for you,resulting a "normal" image with ambient light on it
@GleoLidiaFarmer443413 жыл бұрын

I'm in manual mode with F22 and I have my SB600 flash using a wire and connected to my Nikon D800E. However, my camera won't let me set my shutter speed faster than 250 of a second :( Is there a setting I need to change in my camera or flash?
@Banderas5x10 жыл бұрын
You need ti turn on the HSS - high speed sync - function. I don`t know how does it work on Nikon system, maybe you have to read the manual of you flash.
@spystyle8 жыл бұрын
Some Nikon cameras can sync with a manual flash at 1/2000th of a second LOL. If I recall it was the D70, D70S, and D40 ??? It has to be a manual flash though, like a $20 Sunpak.

Here is an easier way to explain manual flash - "aperture controls flash exposure", "shutter speed controls ambient exposure". Any manual flash can be used in this scenario, even one that cost a mere $20 :)
