Thank you Bryan, video was very informative, and helped me in doing my early morning portraits that I love to do in the summer. I always shoot in manual, for the most part, and sometimes it took several shots to get it right. But now it takes a lot fewer and I am finding I am not wasting that precious morning light, trying to get it right, but instead, 90% of my shots are now usable.

Bryan up until a week or to ago i did not know of you... I stumbled across this video on you tube and I must say I was inspired by your informative and frank video... Let me start off by saying I'm not a morning person but after watching this video, you inspired me to get off my backside and get out of bed early for a first light photo session...

Don't forget to under expose by 2/3 even when using a spot meter which is also metering the reflective light like your camera's meter does. Your spot meter will still try to expose the dusky blue sky as 18% grey which will overexpose it.

thats all valid, however i am a young pro 2 years in the field not long I know but i shoot alot of formats, but i feel alot of older photographers need to move into the 21 century and learn the fact that being good at post production is just as important as the actual shoot it's self. please don't take this the wrong way i totally agree that getting a good shot to start with helps however post processing is just as important :D

Very useful information. I love your series & watch every episode. i'd like tips on night photography of action or sports, such as auto racing, where you can't use a tripod & have constantly changing / relatively low light. once the sun goes down, the track lights are pretty consistent, but i find myself experimenting a lot with different settings to catch the action. i have a nikon d90 with a 50mm prime lens (f1.4) & crank up the iso, but any other tips you can give would be appreciated. thx

Thanks a lot, Bryan. I have a quick question. In the book "Understand Exposure", you never mentioned about metering at "-2/3" off of the dusty sky, when you discussed the "Sky Brothers". You only mentioned "-2/3" for metering off of Green. Can you confirm his?
@otr1otr2
@otr1otr2 10 жыл бұрын
I may be wrong, but I'm making my own interpretation. I think he is metering off the blue sky to 0, then when he recomposes, the meter is then reading a - 2/3. Maybe?

I have been shooting professionally since the 80's. Since digital cameras are the main source of cameras sold people just use the LCD screen to judge their photos. When we shot film we did not have an LCD screen. We had Polaroid but that was never a true example to exposure and color balance. I still think it is important to understand metering and light temp balance to create a good raw file and not to rely on post processing.

Learning how to read lighting values with an exposure meter is very important when setting up strobe, Diva or LCD lights. Please do not rely on your LCD screen for judgement.

great tips! but does this really matter if you shoot in raw?
@BrianPex
@BrianPex 9 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. RAW shooting let's you have total control of white balance AFTER the fact. JPEG does not. Try it. Totally different in regards white balance more than anything else. Remember, a JPEG roughly contains about 1/8th the digital information that a RAW file does.

just point your camera to the sky as mentioned and adjust your meter to a correct exposure...thats all you have to do. The camera meter will read the sky for you. Very simple process.

@burple65
@burple65 12 жыл бұрын
He's just trying to demonstrate how to get the exposure as close as possible to what you want in the first shot. I agree that with digital, you can just take your shot then check your histogram or LCD. If the exposure is a little off, you can adjust as needed for the next shot. For film, not so easy, so you may want to use this technique to get it right the first time. Or you could just bracket your photos and you'd have a nice HDR image.

+just me just an educated guess, but he probably was using iso 1OO, when doing long exposures their is no point in raising ISO, as you just compensate with more exposure time. and get less noise
