How did they keep them from moving around? Didn’t have denture cream back then.

I keep hearing they were held in place by springs but have yet to see a display/ diagram of that.

@@101trus Yes according to Mount Vernon who has a set of them the dentures were held in by springs. They were said to be a total nightmare for Washington to deal with because the springs would have to be regularly tightened to painful levels to do the job of securely holding them in place. It would be just awful for him until they loosened up a bit to become more comfortable. In fact George is said to have been dealing with a new set in the very portrait the dollar bill was made from. The severe discomfort he was going through is said to be the very reason his mouth appears clenched and he looks so stern.

They were not made of wood. Made of ivory and real teeth. This is strange.

Better no teeth than this contraption! My grandma lived in the rural side until she was 94 and most of her older years she went without any teeth. She ate fruit, mashed potatoes, tender meats and loved tea. I really don't think I could live with something so metallic in my mouth. By the looks of it, george had really no teeth left... Poor guy, dentistry has really come a very long way.

Derek Rogers That's right, there has been an urban legend for years that his teeth were made of wood, but scientists have concluded that his teeth were made of real teeth. There has been a rumour that they were slave teeth.
