SmashuGamer Girl Harley Quinn did not originate from the comics. She originated from The Batman Animated Series. Every comic incarnation is based off of that. Harley created herself. She fell in love with the Joker and decided to be his follower in hopes of winning his heart over. Everything she does as a villain is for the Joker. She has no villainess desires of her own.

She nailed that part about codependency. One of the main reasons I hated the SQ movie (apart from its basically nonexistent plot) was due to the fact that the creators painted that "mad love" relationshit between J and Harley in an overly romanticized way. I grew up as a codependent due to my narcissistic father and just went through a really rough breakup with my BPD ex - I can tell you: There's NOTHING romantic about letting your own life fall apart for another person. I literally became a hollow shell filled up with the self hatred my ex reverberated on me and I'll need therapeutical support to find out what is left of my own personality. Anyway - Margot Robbie is the best Harley Quinn ever!

In fact, in the director's version of it he tried to kill her with pushing her out of a plane, but the studio decided to change it as if J was saving her. Maybe he became jealous of Deadshot or something. Harley by the way was a victim of an abuse yet a sweet girl who had darkness in her from the start. I mean, she became a bit nicer after Joker's death, that says a lot. So my point is, it could be much better if we saw the director's cut, but it's already not completely bad

I'm fully convinced that most people hating on Robbie's Harley is just doing it to be a hipster.
