Time. Tax has a very demanding and stressful job and does not have the time, energy, or inclination to take on that kind of task. 2. Liability. If someone's hamster were to die while on this mix, she could get blamed. 3. Cost. It would be very expensive for Tax just to break even. Hi, I know you will probably not read this but I still would like to tell this story. I would like to thank you so much for everything. You Awesome! I had a really bad case of depression, like a bad enough where I wanted to harm myself. And you helped me though it, w aching your adorable hammy videos just made my day and inspired me to get my own little hammy child!!! I asked my mom she said no. I was sad about it, no one there to keep me company I had one pet when I was 9 and he just ran away, I felt like no one loved me, my biological father left, my stepdad is quite rude and negative.... so I did my research I wanted a hammy of my own so badly!! I worked and worked until after around A YEAR of studying the topic I finally convinced my mother. I want to thank you so much for getting me through those rough times.

Lol every time I buy a bag of dried mealworms I can't resist to steal a few 😂 Trust me, they're actually really delicious and provide more protein and nutrients than beef! Super cool! Oh, I've actually been raising Black Soldier Flies as well! I place them into the freezer then bake them! Once they're dried, I do one of few things; Add it into the Mousey or Rattie diet whole, crush them into smaller pieces for the Hermies, or blend them until they're a powder to add into the fish gel food diets! The Goldfish, Bettas, Dwarf Rainbowfish, Shrimp, Snails, Gold Claw Fiddler, and the many others absolutely love it! You should try it! I also eat them myself, since I don't support the consumption of intelligent animals like fish or cows but still need the protein due to my health conditions. I'm basically a vegetarian who eats bugs! :D

Tax's food mix *is* very yummy and I love smelling it because it reminds me of a dried vegetable soup mix, except better! The only thing that is slightly off-putting is leaning down to smell it and then seeing a dried cricket face staring back at you. 😂 But crickets are certainly nutritious for hamsters and great to include in their diet. Yes, oftentimes the colors in commercial mixes tend to be added for human eye appeal! I'm happy to know the food in Kashi's homemade mix is colorful because of the type of food it is (spinach, raspberries, carrots, etc.) rather than because of added dyes. Oh and I love how pretty the flower mixes are when they are sprinkled over bedding! 😍 Thanks for your comment, Uny, and best wishes on your day today!

Are uncooked beans really safe? I don't think my dwarf hamster would eat them and there seem to be some disagreements on the safety of raw beans. I'm looking at maybe some pre-cooked then dried beans (only if they are still crunchy and edible) instead of these rock hard beans. I'm even considering cooking, then freezing them and pulling them out as needed.

@abbyglass45655 жыл бұрын
This mix looks amazing!! Just a couple things I'm wondering though: Why no sunflower seeds? (I apologize if they were added to the mix and I just didn't notice)... I know they are a hamster favorite. Also, you put a lot of protein in there and I always worry about giving my hamster too many meal worms as to not make him obese and I know they don't eat a whole lot of insects in the wild right? I'm assuming you guys know your stuff just want to learn more about your reasoning behind these two things.
@HoppingHammy5 жыл бұрын
Hi Abby! That is actually a very good question to ask. :) Since this mix is not used alone and is combined with 2 commercial mixes, one of which has sunflower seeds already, there are not additional seeds like this added. (Also no peanuts, pumpkin seeds, etc.) Instead it offers different ingredients to add variety. Strangely enough, Kashi much seems to prefer the mealworms, crickets, and dried turkey over the seeds and nuts in her commercial mix! She still eats everything, but she has her favorites. I hope this answers your question and if Tax has anything additional to add, she might comment after me.
@abbyglass45655 жыл бұрын
@@HoppingHammy Thank you for answering my question! But I'm also curious now how much protein a day would it be okay for my hamster to get? Mealworms are his favorite thing but I try not to feed him too many because I didn't think it was good for him to have a whole lot. He is a russian campbells btw
@burntbeansoup Жыл бұрын
Looks great! However I really think there should be mostly grains and seeds, especially for dwarf hamsters as they're prone to diabetes. In the wild, most of their diet is grains, seeds, and insects rather than fruits and vegetables.

Hi Hopping Hammy how are you doing today fine I hope. Thanks so much for sharing this video with us. I'll try some of it with Beauty. It seems a lot though. And those mealworms and crickets they look real. Today I took Ginny to the vet's they didn't see her last Thursday because I didn't have the right benefit letter. And I still forgot it today. I've got to take her back to the vet's tomorrow I have to be there for 8.30 in the morning. I've had a really busy week this week. And I'm absolutely tired. You see they can't examine her when she is awake cos she will bit and scratch them so they have to put it under. I think I've got to leave her there and collect her later. I'm going to have some sleep. Before I pick her up. I really hope that everything is a ok with you and Kashi. I'm going to have my dinner now I'm really hungry well take real good care of yourself and Kashi and lots of love from Jackie Beauty and Ginny bye for now love Jackie xxxx
@HoppingHammy5 жыл бұрын
Hello Jackie! Thank you for watching the video. Yes it is quite a lot of ingredients and also a lot of money to buy too, so it might not be something you want to attempt. That's okay too! For some people it's much easier to just stick with commercial mixes that have all of the vitamins and necessary nutrients that make up a hamster diet. When you start adding other things in, it can get pretty complicated. I hope you can get some rest tonight and that all of Ginny's tests can go well and provide the information you need. Good night! Enjoy your dinner. :)

@HoppingHammy5 жыл бұрын
I definitely understand where you're coming from. What mix do you use, if you don't mind me asking? Definitely check out the articles that are linked in the description and I think they will be of help to you in your research. Kashi absolutely loves her mix from Tax and there's hardly any left behind by the next night I feed her. Your hamster might end up liking something like that too! Now I do still feed 2 commercial diets, just in case that wasn't clear in the video. It isn't really recommended to use a fully homemade diet since the commercial ones have added vitamins and minerals (which oftentimes are added into those pellets that hamsters refuse to eat ha!) but homemade mixes are certainly a wonderful addition to add higher quality of nutrition. Taxonomist certainly knows way more about all of this than I do, so her articles are worth reading. Good luck! 🙂

HoppingHammy yes! That was clear :) I just feel this way they’d be getting more nutrients. I’m feeding a recommended brand, but sometimes I question the fattier seeds that are in there and not sure I want to sort them all out as some do 😂

I miss my hamster hammy. It's been 3 years now. I was thinking of re getting one. I heard no lettus pellets only.
@HoppingHammy5 жыл бұрын
Lettuce and fresh fruit / veggies are perfectly fine (and good!) to feed in moderation along with a dried hamster mix. Feeding pellets alone can cause hard stools and even constipation, not to mention it's an unnatural and boring diet for the hamster. Hamsters love variety, they love foraging for seeds and small things, and they thrive on having a wide variety of healthy foods. :)

Is it ok that this is all freeze dried? I've read that they need fresh fruit and veggies?
@HoppingHammy3 жыл бұрын
Hi! The veggies / fruit in this are incorporated as part of the main diet mix, but I absolutely suggest feeding fresh food alongside it. :) Good question! If you're interested in seeing what I fed my hamster, check out Kashi's Nightly Routine video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5bPlpyOg7t7jMk One reason why it's nice to add freeze dried fruit / veggies into a mix is because some ingredients may be more seasonal to find, or they might require buying a larger amount of at a time. For example, it's easy enough to toss a few salad leaves into a hamster's dish, because most of us buy bagged salad to eat. However something like a zucchini could be harder since many people don't even buy zucchini for themselves. By offering this as a freeze dried option, it gives the hamster additional variety and vitamins they wouldn't get otherwise. But yes, absolutely offer your hamster fresh food too, because the additional water and moisture is beneficial for them. I hope this helps!

Is it okay to use Sunburst Hamster food and Mazuri lab block? To be honest, I don’t the time to make hamster food. I am going to a classical school. I have a puppy, and I arrive early and leave late since I am riding with my dad that works at the school I go to aswell.
@HoppingHammy5 жыл бұрын
That's totally understandable about not having time to make a hamster food. Regarding your question on Sunburst and Mazuri, you will hear completely different opinions on those foods, depending who you talk to. I know of folks in the hamster community who believe Sunburst is too sugary and contains too many "treat" items, while others feed it and have perfectly healthy hamsters. As of now, both Sunburst and Mazuri are listed as good food choices in the Hamster Hideout commercial mix thread. You also get the perfect guaranteed analysis if you buy a bag of each and mix them together. I personally like both of those foods and use them. You can do your own research, though, and come to your own conclusion. :) I never want anyone to do something simply because I do. Hope this helps!

HoppingHammy I’ve briefly researched dietary requirements so far, but Sunburst and Rat & mouse diet mixed seems to pop up a lot, I will be sure to do so!

I don't understand, how much of each one?? Where are the quantities?
@HoppingHammy5 жыл бұрын
Hello! The quantities are intentionally not shown for liability and other reasons, so this video wasn't meant to be a guide on following this mix. :) It was filmed to show the possibilities there are with creating a homemade hamster mix, as well as learning the importance of proper weighing and selection of ingredients. If you're serious about creating your own mix, you can check out the links in the description bar. Hamster Hideout Forum is a very good place to learn and gain knowledge on the topic of homemade mixes. Hamster diets is topic I personally choose not to give specific information on for various reasons, but I do have some tidbits of info sprinkled here and there in my videos.

Would this work for rats?
@HoppingHammy5 жыл бұрын
Hello! I'm going to let Tax answer this question, if she sees it and wants to reply. I do believe she makes a homemade mix for her rats though, but obviously some of the ingredients and GA might be different from what is fed to hamsters.
@TaxonomusDomesticus5 жыл бұрын
I make a similar mix for my rats. I do omit a lot of the high protein things like animal protein and legumes. I also have a much higher ratio of veggies to seeds for them.

Would this work with Gerbils?
@HoppingHammy5 жыл бұрын
Yes, gerbils can have homemade mixes like this one, you just would have to do research to ensure it contains the correct ingredients and ratios that gerbils require. I believe gerbils and hamsters are extremely similar in diets though.
