Aw I'm so glad the clips of Kashi, Streudel, and Carob made you smile! 😊 Tax's mix really is amazing and it smells SO good - like a dried vegetable soup mix or something! I would be tempted to sample it if it didn't have crickets and mealworms mixed in haha! 😂 Tax might see your comment and choose to clarify or not, but I believe there are specific reasons why she doesn't sell her mix. I do know that it's likely very expensive and time consuming to put together all of the components. 💕

Hi HammyLux! That's so sweet of you to say. I do not have plans to sell my mix anywhere at this time (today I learned people sell pet food on Etsy...I did not know that was a thing!). Cost is a big part of the reason - what I would have to charge to simply break even would be way more than most people would be willing to pay. Dried veggies are very, very expensive, and they make up a big part of my mix. The other thing is liability aka "Tax doesn't need that kind of stress in her life." :P Inevitably, some hamster would pass while eating my mix and the owner would decide to blame me for it and then it becomes a whole mess. :(

HammyLux I agree! If taxonomist ever decided to sell her mix online, I would buy it in a heartbeat. I already go out of my way to buy the best commercially available hamster food and treats for my babies, as well as buying various additions to their food mixes in bulk from the grocery store--so cost isn't really an issue for me and I'm sure many other ham parents would agree. That being said, I did read taxonomist's reply to this comment thread and her reasons are absolutely valid and I respect her decision. But if she ever changed her mind, I would be the first in line to buy her food mix :) Regardless, the insane time and energy she put into researching the topic and posting about it on hamster forums is invaluable and I wish there was some way to thank her with more than just words. (A gofundme? Idk) Thanks a million times over, @Taxonomist!

I use the Mazuri and Sunburst too :D I have 10 Syrians lol. I give one blueberry and one tiny piece of veggie a day, they love cauliflower a lot! And then little treats like nuts or dried fruit when they have run around time so they come say hi to me, it's a bribe haha my hamster Rupert is actually crawling on the keyboard as I type XD I just recently found you and am so excited to get to see your journey with Kashi, she's so cute

Loved the diet video! I took your advice and called around pet stores to see if they had any hamsters available for adoption. On my 11th called store, I finally found a PetSmart who had a Russian Dwarf that cannot be sold due missing toes on her front right paw from injury. What a great food mix. I wish those brands/foods were available to me where i live.. the best food i can find where i live is versele laga hamster nature and versele laga complete hamster and gerbil pellets. Those 2 mixed together. Haha you probably dont realize how lucky you actually are to have that stuff available to you. 😂 i also hope kaytee comes to europe with their bedding. I have the blocks of dried out food but as my hamster is getting older he finds it harder to chew things down so I just add in a small amount of water and it turns into mush (lovely🤮) but. If you're referring to my homemade food - most of it is human-grade, actually! The vast majority of it is meant for people to eat (the seeds and grains come from health foods stores, the veggies are meant to be re-hydrated and used in recipes etc.). The only parts that aren't are the insects, the freeze-dried meats, and some of the millet.

This looks like a great diet with a good variety of food. I make my own hammy food mix, I have done so for a few years. My hams also get fresh veggies daily and fruit twice a week. As treats they get baby puffs and I also make my own treats. It was lovely to see clips of Kashi (her fur looks amazing - really thick) as well as Carob and little Strudel. I hope Kashi is doing well with taming.

I also feed the Mazuri+Higgins mix. I couldn't find these in pet stores near me, but luckily chewy dot com carries them. You can get a bag of organic toasted flax seed pretty inexpensively at Aldi. Not only is flax seed good for your hamster, it's good for you, too. I also feed my hamster things like rice, uncooked plain instant oatmeal, steamed vegetables, and puffed rice or puffed kamut from Arrowhead Mills. Basically, lots of foods good for humans are good for hammies, too!

Hey there I love these videos… I feed Cici and Thumbelina my dwarves a variety of things: A mixture of Higgins and Burgess with added meal worms, the Mazuri lab blocks, selective science pellets, hempseed's for training, flaxseed, oatmeal, and a variety of fresh foods and vegetables. No fruit or sugary treats and I try to keep it low on the fats. I also make sure my hamsters eat the whole bowl before I refill with that huge variety again. The great thing is my son doesn't mind going through the hamster food and picking out all of those little extruded pellets so I can see easily when my hammy's are truly done with their food. Do any hamsters at all eat those things? I have never had a hamster that has eaten those little green tubular things in the mixes... you would be shocked at how much of the bags they actually compose, darn filler! Anyway I'm loving the Kashi videos💕💝

I walked down the row where the rodent food was to get to the animals and I saw the bag of Higgins there. I was so excited. I had contacted Global Pet Foods because I have heard that they will bring both foods in, but they never responded...

Hi! I use a delicious formula for my hamster that contains seeds, nuts, corn, and other things i dont know. I also mix in some Oxbow food too. The brands i use are "bonanza hamster diet and Oxbow" they have omega. 3, omega 6 and fibre and ofcourse treats! Is that what a hamster,s diet should look like?

I need help. The only food that is sold where I live is living world seed mix and living world extrusion pellets. I have been feeding my hamster this as it’s the only one available. The protein is too low, and I need to switch, but the only way I can get a good foo is through ordering, and it’s like $50 per bag!

Yes, I try to record clips of her when possible. :) She is quite a shy hamster though and prefers to wait until the lights are out to make an appearance. Sometimes I'm able to get some clips of her exploring, but I never want to stress her out to make videos.

I need advice! I have a hamster that sometimes will let me pet, hold, and play with her without any problems but then other times bite me even when not trying to pet her. Once she even broke the skin and ever since I've been scared to handle her. Should I keep trying to interact with her or let her do her own thing?

phebe york keep trying. Very gently and slow though. Basically start taming from beginning. Let her sniff you, hold treats out for her, encourage her to climb in to your hands. Hold her inside her cage or close to the floor in case she jumps. You can even wear gloves if you are extra nervous (put the gloves down your top/under your armpits for a while first, so they smell like you.) Just be very patient. Good luck.

I have a question for anyone who is willing to/ able to answer! I have a male Syrian hamster, that’s about 1yr an 3 months old. I feed him higgins sunburst, mazuri lab blocks, and I add a few things in as well. Lately he hasn’t really been eating as much. He would normally eat 2 tablespoons of his food plus a lab block or two a night. Lately that’s been lasting him 2 or three nights. I’ve given him some small pieces of fruit to see if he was just bored with his food and he just set it in his food bowl and went back to playing. He’s still as active as he always has been, and his teeth are fine. Is this just due to old age, or does anyone have any ideas of what it could be? If he starts losing weight I will definitely be bringing him to the vet. Thanks!

I once gave my hamsters (I have a russian dwarf and a syrian, both in seperate cages don't worry) a little piece of cheese as a treat. But then someone told me they're not supposed to eat cheese (and yoghurt drops or any dairy)... What's your opinion on that?

Hi! :) This is something I've heard too, but I have to disagree. Personally I've never had a hamster who has shown any form of dairy sensitivity with having cheese or yogurt. Keep in mind that I feed only a few strings of cheese like you see in the photo, and on rare occasion. It's something that my elder hamsters especially enjoy as it's soft to chew, tasty, and contains some protein. For yogurt, this is something I specifically use for hamsters who are on antibiotics as the probiotics in yogurt are beneficial at protecting their good gut flora so it isn't destroyed. As far as yogurt drops go, the main concern with those is that they are so high in sugar and essentially junk food. Again a rare treat is fine if you want to spoil your hamster, but I don't recommend yogurt drops as part of their routine diet.

There is a hint of truth to this, but the idea that they should never ever have it is exaggerated. As with most adult mammals, hamsters are lactose intolerant (lactose is a type of sugar found in milk). Most mammals do not consume milk past babyhood, so they have no need to be able to digest lactose. Lactose is not poisonous or deadly, it's just that it can cause stomach upset if fed in large amounts. The key is moderation, as HoppingHammy said - very small amounts are fine and are unlikely to cause any issues. It also helps that cheese has much less lactose than straight-up milk does. Yogurt drops are a little different. Commercial yogurt drops generally have little to no yogurt - they're literally just globs of fat and sugar. Not poisonous or deadly, but very, very unhealthy (it would be like you eating ~10+ chocolate bars at once).

Hello! Hamsters naturally hoard food to bring to their nest, so this is completely normal. When your daughter cleans her hamster's nest out, have her take note at how much food is left. You always want a hamster to have a small stash of food available, but it should not be excessive. She can adjust the amount of food she's feeding based on observation of the food stash.

I have a question open to anyone who has the answer. I’m rescuing a super obese hamster who had been over fed with no wheel and kept in a small 10 gallon tank and will be getting him tomorrow. I was already planning on feeding the Mazuri with the Higgins Sunburst but will he be okay just eating that right away? Will he need a transition into the food?

Hi there! He should be just fine switching over. :) Sometimes I have chosen to transition (over the course of 2-3 days) my adopted hamsters if they are a healthy weight or have been on the same diet for most of their life, but from what I've heard it really isn't necessary to do so. I think that once he starts exercising and has a larger cage / better diet, you should see a reduction of his weight. If he's a dwarf, you may want to monitor his water intake and pee to ensure he isn't diabetic. Good luck with him!

HoppingHammy thanks very much! He’s a black and white Syrian and is about 6 months old. At the pet store they didn’t have the Higgins Sunburst and mazuri or any quality foods that I’ve heard of. I ended up settling for the better food out of all the crappy ones they had which is the Kaytee Fiesta as a seed mix and the carefresh complete for added protein. I do plan on ordering the Higgins and mazuri once he’s done with these foods as they are pretty small bags and shouldn’t take him long to finish. It’s definitely better than what he was eating before though. He seems to be adjusting well, I have him in a 110 qt bin for now until I can get something bigger as this was very short notice. He’s been running on his wheel a lot since I brought him home a few hours ago and has eaten a little bit so I’m glad he’s settling in okay. In a few days, probably Saturday, I’ll start the taming process, he seems like such a sweetheart.

Omg so he’s been home for a few hours and he’s just started burrowing under the substrate and he got in there and hit the bottom of the cage. Then he started making this screaming noise so I ran to the cage and kind of dug him out a little and once he got out he went on his merry way fine and started eating in his dish. What just happened????

I have a question, when I got my first hamster from petsmart they told me that syrian hamsters cannot have any type of seeds and to only feed them seedless food. They also told my friend that when she got her 2nd hamster from there. They said that they can back the hamsters up and even suggested to my friend that her first hamsters cause of death was probably from feeding him seeds. Mean while I have found no evidence of this and always see hamster owners feeding seeds- I still have yet to feed my hamsters seeds just in case I but am conflicted because i want to give them more variety!! I started giving him millet but im worried if thats even safe. Im being told two different things, can someone please enlighten me?

That sounds very odd to me, but it's hard to really present a counterargument because the PetSmart employee's advice was so vague without much explanation. One thing to keep in mind is that ALL hamster food, pelleted or seed mix...is technically made of seeds. Pellets are literally just ground-up, processed seeds (usually wheat, corn, and oats). If seeds are that deadly to hamsters, then pretty much all hamster food would be just as deadly. Seeds are a natural food for hamsters. It's what they eat in the wild and its what their bodies are designed to consume. On thinking about this, I'm wondering if the employee was confused between hamsters and guinea pigs (a lot of people do this)? Guinea pigs are grazers and feed almost exclusively on grassy and fibrous parts of plants, which is why they are fed hay and hay-based pellets in captivity. And guinea pigs should not have seeds in their diet, because it's not what their bodies need. But hamsters are different animals with different digestive systems. Not all seeds are safe, of course (fruit pits, apple seeds, etc. are poisonous). If you want to enhance your hamster's diet, I recommend getting a good-quality mix such as Higgins Sunburst or National Geographic Hamster. Mazuri discontinued their hamster blocks awhile back, so they recommended using the rat / mouse diet as it's a very similar formula and works for hamsters too. :)
