This video is for my Ceramics II students as we are making Lidded Pots for our Raku project. I show different kinds of lids and pots- and if you are interested in the pdf of the handout I made, it is found here: drive.google.com/file/d/1dX3T...
The pots are not yet finished at this point… I will still clean those and attach handles, and will post the finishing video in a few days and add it to the playlist below.
Here is a playlist of all the videos in this pinch lidded pot project:
• Lidded Pinch Pots- (Ce...
We are using Standard 153 stoneware in our class for this project rather than our traditional raku clay body, to simplify the clay bodies they are dealing with should students be working from home while quarantined in fall of '20. We normally use 259 for raku.
For the great tools I used in the video (including the mudtools ribs and needle tools) check out this link to a live Googledoc I continually update with lots of my favorite tools on Amazon using my associate links! docs.google.com/document/d/1X...
I made this video for my Ceramics II students at Mason High School.
I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my KZbin channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!
Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!

This is better than my college course on adding a flange, however, my directions are to add a flange to both the base pot and lid. I am searching for another video now, unless anyone has something to offer in the way of tips for me. Thank you! 😊

I guess the ultimate question is why would you add it to both? If it has a specific function that is served beyond adding it to only one that makes sense. However, if you can achieve the desired outcome with one, it seems like it may be unnecessary?

Thank you so much for showing the different ways of doing this! I just completed my first semester of a ceramics class and don't want to lose my "touch" while I'm on break. Going to buy some air dry clay for the time being and make some jewelry holders with lids using some of these methods :)

Such a wonderful and clear video! Lovely pots! I have a question. You mention waiting until the handle and lid have the same moisture? Before scoring and slipping. How does that work since the lid and the handle keep drying and one is more moist then the other?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 3 жыл бұрын
I normally have my kids store the handle and the lid together so the moisture will even out between them before they attach. It could be within a plastic bag, but we now use plastic boxes with plaster as damp boxes to help keep everything moist.

I loved the idea of using a notched card. Do you have any templates or videos demonstrating for or how to cut these notches?

I do have a video on making notched cards here! kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqvVg4SAar54arc That doesn't show those like the ones in the video, but if you want a still photo to trace, here is a link to a photo of a few in my Googledrive: drive.google.com/file/d/1QC1_zmeYEjEJJAdB744eQ7Vt_2OhMN9O/view?usp=sharing

Hi, really great video! Can I ask about sizing? So if the pot is leather hard & the lid being formed is fairly soft, and it's sized at that point to fit the leather hard pot, when it shrinks through drying will it not be too small? Maybe I missed something in your explanation, sorry. Thanks 🙏
@purkleL
@purkleL 10 ай бұрын
Eg the flanges are sized when soft
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 10 ай бұрын
The moisture of the two are actually close enough not to be an issue for the kids. We use damp boxes- so when the flange is attached- it will be the close enough to same moisture as the lid which should be just about the same for the pot. The sizing hasn’t been an issue for them working with these moistures. That being said- these lids aren’t super snug or precise enough to cause fit issues. I hope that helps!!

How do you deal with the clay you are taking off?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 3 жыл бұрын
At school, I just recycle the clay in a pug mill. If doing it in my home studio, I would gather the scraps in a bucket, dry them out, then eventually add water to recycle. I have a video on recycling clay in my home studio if that would help... kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJ2zcpWJrcaLeLc
