Not to mention all of the LONG 2x4s from the ceiling that he hacked 4 feet from the end. Just cut the nails at each end and you have usable salvaged wood to help with the budget.

You can take the wall out and have a flat ceiling. Get an engineer to tell you size of 😊beam needed. Here’s what you do build temporary walls on both sides. Cut the ceiling joists to have opening the size of width of beam. Put jack studs at either end if no space in attic for beam to rest. Use Simpson joist hangers on ceiling joists and boom you have a flat ceiling. We did it a lot in remodels. It’s coming along great. Retire the whole house, your kitchen alone should have 7 individual breakers

I came here to type this. Even if the beam has to be on the larger side, recess as much as possible and have what's left protrude out of the ceiling. It can then be used in the design as a feature, but I'm pretty certain that wall can go.

Yeah he seems to accomplish a lot but as projects get bigger nice to have a clear plan so that when unforeseen happens you can adjust. It just made me cringe when he had to pull off newly painted trim on the outside of the house. All is well though. Still entertaining.

Put a column at the top of the stairs to the basement and maybe one more along the span and you can still get rid of that wall and the columns will support the weight of the roof. Great video!!

I've done some home building and a bunch of old building renovations back in the day, not sure we ever went from the outside in though.... I get it that sponsors and weather are important, but when you have to get your exterior paint to match perfectly after the fact, well....

There's a chance to remove that load bearing wall without a massive beam cuting into your head space. Instead of resting joists ontop of the beam you can put it flush with the ceiling into the attic and use joist hangers off of the beam. Plus a beam or steal post on other side of the beam to hold it up. The beam will then be hidden in the attic while opening up the whole area.

Yeah hidden or not why not add the beam? Still was wondering if he did knock out that wall how he was gonna do the staircase but I did an exposed beam in one spot and a non exposed beam in another when I remodeled my house. Love my open floor plan now!

I am curious if they saw that you stacked the ceiling joints on a 2x4 double top plate that you ripped the wall out from under it? That is technically load bearing and not sure that would pass code. That ceiling may sag over time since you didn't header the opening or anything.

I have been watching for years. This is the most exciting video about this old house lol demo is always so exciting to me. Once I open one wall, can't help but open another lol can't wait for the kitchen. But from a girls prospective, if you have the budget, please no white kitchen or black hardwares. Incorporate silver or gold with beige or olive green cabinets are so much more high end looking. Of course if you really have the budget, go dark walnut tone with antique gold handles, and insert cabinet doors lol

Tip for the future, i try to take off trim and anything holding back the drywall and score the drywall at the corners you can get big chunks out and not have as much mess. don't be like chip

The structural wall aside, which many have commented on that you could remove. Why do all the exterior work only to come back and take windows out and trim and fill in holes with more new boards? That seems like a lot of extra work and money to do? A bit of planning before hand and extra demo would have saved you.

You mentioned the lack of headers. Just note that Headers above windows/doors are only needed on load bearing walls. No need to waste bigger 2x material for a non-load bearing wall (not saying that those walls weren't load bearing, just saying that you don't need them unless it's load bearing)

Nice I love the video as always. As a German I am fully aware that you can build prooper homes with wood - still the american cost effective way is against my mind. If we build a home it "should last a lifetime" - American homes will do that too ofc, still for me it feels like they will last only 30-50 years. German wooden houses are built with massive beams, one layer of OSB on both side and then drywall on top both sides. But here just Drywall on the wooden frames, you can literally shake the walls with your hands.

A true header as you imagine it isn’t necessary on all the non load bearing walls you pointed out. It WAS on the one you found because it was likely the outside gable end wall of the house hence the exterior siding. Stop calling the “other guy” an idiot, someone’s gonna rip your work down and say the same exact thing, it’s just what us contractors love doing.

Anything is pretty much possible. But if it's a budgetary constraint you are moot. That wall can sensibly be removed with a flush beam (PSL or LVL) or a packed out H or I beam. Obviously just pay an engineer to size it and stamp the plans for it. I am sure you can do it skill-wise, but its a question of money (as every remodel is!)

The reason they didn't put plywood or OSB on the outside walls is because it's not required in some areas. Also, it only really serves as bracing for sheer strength on walls. You would typically find cross bracing from corner to corner on homes without exterior sheathing. I built 2 houses in 2022 with plywood every 8 feet and foam panels in between.

Please don’t use screws with any joists or joist hangers. Screws lack the tensile strength that proper nails provide. Screws will likely fail under dead/live loads. Also a dab of glue or construction adhesive on the bottom of hangers will prevent shifting and/or squeaking. Great videos and series!
