Thanks for sharing your knowledge Tiffany. Could you put the stencil against the clay body and apply the slip directly to it?
@celiagreenaway7253 жыл бұрын
I’ve done that with same coloured slip (porcelain) as the bowl, then glazed with celadon. Works a treat! I use my own stencils cut on a silhouette cutter in thin plastic that moulds to the bowl shape. Am going to try this too!
@tiffanybailey58923 жыл бұрын
Hello T&K Smith, You're very welcome. Yes, you could do that, but I have found that the slip doesn't transfer as evenly and neatly if you try to apply the slip through the stencil directly onto the clay. Also, it is harder to build the slip up thickly when you transfer directly through the stencil onto the clay form.

Can you use underglaze rather than slip?
@hilaryjones3423 жыл бұрын
Yes - I’ve seen there are plenty of videos on underglaze transfers - pretty much the same process 😁
@tiffanybailey58923 жыл бұрын
Hello Donna, Yes, you could use underglaze, but your design will not be raised off the surface- it will be flush to your surface as colored slip is clay so it leaves a raised design. Also, you may find that the underglaze may run (blur) a bit more in the glaze firing when covered with a clear glaze. The look of the transfer with underglaze is also bit different. Underglaze will give you a more distressed screen print look. I hope this helps!

If your design has dried too far could you spray it with water to rehydrate it?
@tiffanybailey58923 жыл бұрын
Hello Jeremy, You can certainly try that, but because the clay is so thin it will usually start to crack and disintegrate as you add water. Also, you may find that if you do get it to adhere to your form, as the clay form starts to dry the slipped stencil design may be more likely to crack off before or even after the bisque firing. I hope this helps!
