@PotteryCrafters2 ай бұрын
Sure! Oxides are naturally occurring minerals that contain metal oxides, such as iron oxide or cobalt oxide that react to heat and are more unpredictable. Stains are pre-mixed, synthetic colorants made from a combination of metal oxides and other chemicals. Stains are designed to produce consistent, vibrant colors that are less dependent on firing conditions.

What's the difference between making it from bone dry clay and pre-made slip with the right consistency? Also since it's still clay would this need to be covered with glaze? I'm guessing some sort of clear if possible since the color would probably change with a colored glaze?
@PotteryCrafters Жыл бұрын
Hi Izzy. Good questions. Yes, you can make the colored slip from both premade slip and bone-dry clay. I was showing the way you can make plain slip first because some potters may not have premade slip, and it is hard to make slip from moist clay. Yes, you are right. I have both ^5-6 porcelain and laguna B-mix bone dry "scrap," which I would like to use for decorating slip(s). When "reformulating" these as a slip for decorating (either textured or painting) do they need to be matched to the same clay? Or as long as they are the same firing range (^5-6), can they be used on either the porcelain or the B-mix? (I'm experimenting with greenware.) What problems might I run into? I saw the comment regarding deflocculant, but wonder if I want to adjust the viscosity to allow for painting or dipping the greenware, if that would be the best approach for thinning to minimize the water content to better manage fitting the slip to the clay? TIA!
@PotteryCrafters Жыл бұрын
Hi Bob. Just making sure if it's the porcelain Five, you can not use it as a slip because it is touchy and will start to melt over cone 5. You can use a different clay body for a slip but it is best to use the same slip on your clay because the clay and slip will expand and contract together, and they will marry well in the kiln. I don't use a deflocculate in my decorating slip. It is used more with slip-casting molds. Here is a post with a video that may also help with slip questions. Just recently found your videos and have been enjoying them. On the one making colored slip, is there a reason you couldn’t start with liquid slip just from throwing clay? I save slip out of my wheel pan after throwing and then I use an immersion blender to get it well blended and smooth. Is there a reason why I couldn’t use this and add the powdered mason stain to that and mix it in rather than drying the clay and making it into tiny a particles and then adding Mason stain? Could I measure the uncolored slip as you did and then just measure the mason stain into it?
@PotteryCrafters2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Lee. Good question. Yes, there are different ways to do it. I found this way to work best for me. I like to get the clay nice and smooth first. If there are any clumps or debris, I like to rid of those before adding the color. Some potters add water to the mason stains first, then add it to the slip. If I don't use all the liquid mason stain in that batch, I have to store it in another container until I make more. 😊

Hi, there! How much water are you adding? Is it just covering the 10 oz of clay crumbles or is up to 12 oz? I can't quite see the measurements on the cup. Thanks!
@PotteryCrafters2 жыл бұрын
Very good question. I add around a cup of water. If the slip is too thick, it's easier to add a little more water. If I added too much water, I will crumble up some more clay and add a little. It is hard to get the exact amount of water because the clay bits can be broken up a little smaller or larger, affecting the amount of water you need to get the right consistency that you want your Slip to be. 😊

Hi there, I just followed your video to make colored slip with black mason stain. Easy. However, you say in your video that 2 T mason stain = 1 ounce. I weighed AND used a Tablespoon and when I put the first T in, it weighed 1 ounce already. Should I have gone with 2T or 1 oz? I went with the weight measurement but could always add another spoonful. I looked elsewhere and people say it depends on the color you're using. Thoughts?

You're welcome. Good questions. It's best to use the same clay you are working with, because some clays don't get along or fire at different temperatures. @PotteryCrafters3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Very good question 😍 I still have slip that I made over a year ago and it is still good. I use freezer baggies and keep the air out. So I would say as long as you take the air out when you seal it back up again it can last over a year for sure.😊

Have you tried adding mica powders to slip?
@PotteryCrafters4 жыл бұрын
That's a really good question. The mica colors are awesome. You have to be aware that not all mica colors work in kilns. Many can be used in the Kiln at lower temperatures like cone 017 and 018. 😊 If you come across any that you can high or mid-fire please let me know. Thank you 😍

What size of mesh for straining are you using?
@PotteryCrafters4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, I do not know the size, but it is a fine-mesh strainer. It is a kitchen aid if that will help. I noticed with some strainers the mesh is too big. 😊

Marie, do you apply these slip colors to greenware or bisque ware? If greenware does the pot retain most of the color ? Thanks
@PotteryCrafters3 жыл бұрын
Great question Bob. 😊 Slip should be applied to Greenware so the clay and slip can shrink together. The slip will retain its color beautifully. For me, it has always turned out a bit darker and more vibrant.

Hopefully this isn't a stupid question... Checking on food safety for the mason stain... Planning on trying this idea on the greenware and then using food safe clear glaze for the final firing. Can anyone see any reason this would be undesirable?

Hi Brandy. No, it is not a stupid Question. You just want to be sure. Yes, you are right. As long as you apply clear glaze, it will be food safe. Just make sure the glaze is food safe. My piece I'm doing is red clay and I used white underglaze,but the clay keep washing off with the extra under glaze. Can you help me or tell what I'm doing wrong.

Hi Heidi. I'm doing well thank you. If I understand right you may not be allowing the underglaze and clay to dry enough before wiping it off. Hope that helps.

I can replace the mason stain with acrylic paint?
@PotteryCrafters3 жыл бұрын
That is a very good and important question. 😊 No, you can not use acrylic paint because the composition of the paint is different from the mason stains. The paint can not withstand the heat and will burn off the clay.

@PotteryCrafters3 жыл бұрын
Well, I'm glad you asked. 😊 That is another good question. Mica powder has such pretty colors. Mica powder is mainly used with air dry clay that is not fired in the kiln. Unfortunately, you can only fire mica powder to 1382°F or 750°C (cone 017).

Seria barbotina com courante?
@PotteryCrafters4 жыл бұрын

I just got mason stains. Mazerine blue, Bermuda green, pansy purple, blackberry wine, prysad yellow and black. Any suggestions on the quantity needed for making colored slip? You needed 2 tbsp of blue but 1 of the green. Is there a rule of thumb for colors. IE darker stains need more (or less) then lighter colors. Also, what size of mesh was your strainer? Nothing fancy? Can I just get from the dollar or second hand store? Thanks!
@PotteryCrafters4 жыл бұрын
WOW!!! That is great!😍 With the mason stains, You don't need to add as much stain to the darker colors and the lighter colors need more. The amount you add depends on how dark you want your colors. Keep in mind they do fire darker. That's why I measure it out so I know how many teaspoons or tablespoons created that color in 2 cups of clay. The strainer I use is a kitchen aid with a small mesh. You can use any strainer. The size of the mesh depends on how smooth you want your slip to be. The amount you make depends on how much and often you use your slip. I would make a batch of at least 2 cups and store them in a plastic freezer bag. it lasts the longest that way and stops the mold from growing. Enjoy your stains 😃
@TDaily-vl7kw4 жыл бұрын
Pottery Crafters thank you for the quick response! I would probably make only 1 cup but I do love underglaze and slip better then glazing (but I love it all) and am just discovering underglaze so will use on every piece from now on. Currently in college part time visual arts this term starting next week and glaze technology, decals, lusters are all upcoming. Went back as an adult student 🤗 it’s been awesome. I like your channel!

@@PotteryCrafters It might be useful to weigh-out a portion of the slip then dry to bone dry and weigh again. This will allow more easily adding of colorants by percentage of dry weight to make consistent colors.
@PotteryCrafters Жыл бұрын
Yes, Bob, you can do it that way also. But as long as you have the weight of the dry clay and water, you can still adjust the amount of colorant you want to use.

You made a point to talk about how important it is to measure, but if you ever mentioned how much water, I completely missed it.
@PotteryCrafters6 ай бұрын
That is an excellent question. You will need to keep track of the amount you use because the amount of water will be determined by how thick you want your slip to be. Some potters like it a little thicker then others depending on the decorating technique. You will want 10oz. of slip to 1 or 2 tablespoons of stain depending on the shade of color you want to produce. 😊
