Thanks for making this, Sean. Phil has been one of my favourite photographers for a while now, and I'm consistently impressed with and inspired by his work. Wow. Phil's portraits sure have a lot of character. And they do so despite their often super-shallow depth of field, which I would otherwise often dismiss as fashionable or gimmicky - he truly nails them. Love that approach of utilizing the ambient, and yet remaining curious about modifying it with artificial light. But most of all this insistence on taking your time, of letting your sitter get used to the camera, and of letting them use whatever they bring to the studio or location with minimal posing or direction. Thank you so much, Sean, for making this available to a wider public. It is truly inspirational.

Wow, Sean, this video really reonates with me. I'm not at Phil's level as a portrait photographer, but I approach my shoots quite similarly. And I am also looking for the same thing in my portraits. It occurred to me I often don't take enough time to allow for the magical portrait moment to occur. In my dance shoots I do, so really quite silly of me. I'm inspired to take my portraiture to the next level: thank you so much!

This aspect of portrait photography that make people accept and even like features of themselves they’d usually try not to show.. The camera captures the thoughts of the subject. The photographer/director etc creates a space for those thoughts. Both go beyond technical ability or access to technology. Even if those things matter, it’s just as important to access the soul of the work as the clarity of its expression.

I certainly would not Phil Sharp's work as headshot photography mainly because headshots are primarily directed by an industries requirements. His work though is phenomenal portraiture. You absolutely connect with each subject and become intrigued by their stories. His portraiture style is unique and refreshing. Thanks Sean for bringing us closer to his work.

And he’s a shining example of letting go and getting out of the way of the camera… am wondering what the little piece of glass that is attached to the lens… is it one of those filters that softens and blurs in specific parts of the frame? It really hit me when he mentioned that he played music during shoots. I was doing an engagement shoot a few weeks ago and began playing music and ask the couple to dance and have fun to it. he thing is, even after the dancing bit I decided to leave music playing. It changed the entire vibe of the shoot, the couple became more relaxed, fun, and themselves. Music is now going to be a key aspect of what I do.

I so wish, I could fall in love with creating portraits of the human species. I love food photography so much - more so, taking an individual thing i.e. fruit or veggie and bring out its personality, robe and details. I treat fruit, veggies etc., almost like a human as I see how beautiful and unique they are.
