there is another way to do this without changing geometry. go to texture bump map, under bump map select edges and adjust according to your preferred parameters. ^_^

Good point Justin! But be careful because round corners can mess up your geometry on more complex builds. Also it is often not reversible so your stuck with it. (Hope this makes sense to you) Also, lots of round corners means lots of extra geometry so choose carefully which corners to round and which not.

It definitely makes sense - I think there is also a workaround you can use with displacement mapping, but I believe that can really slow down your renderings. I haven't done a ton of testing with this yet, but honestly I liked the result I got with the bevel tool better in this case, and it creates much less geometry, so that might also be a good workaround. Thanks Willem!

I prefer to use V-Ray`s Edges. You get the same effect without changing your geometry.

The Rendering Essentials Cool tutorial. More like this: docs.chaosgroup.com/display/VRAYSKETCHUP/Edges This saved me lots of time. I use it as bump map.

Do you use V-Ray 3.6 or 3.4? My material turns all black if I use Edges. No matter if I add it as a diffuse or bump. lol, V-Ray is fucking with me, it worked as soon as I posted that comment...

The problem with textures with beveled edges was driving me crazy! and i tried to fix it manually, which was horrible! thanks for this one click fix, just need to get vray now

Is there a way to edit the material after you UV mapping? as you can see, the bricks from side to side just don't match up, and I feel like that takes away from the realism. With the shark edges you can at least edit the texture placement of each side and make it match up more, yet (obviously) the sharp edge looks stupid. It just feels like either way, we have to sacrifice something. Wondering if there's a way to get the best of both worlds.

Hi! I'm not sure if my question is related to this topic, but I'm wondering if you can help me with material problems when uploading my sketchup model to sketchfab. I noticed that on sketchfab, there are an insanely number of materials created for each face of my model, meaning that each face has a material of its own. I was wondering if that is because of the rounded corners? When I toggle on hidden geometry, those extra faces that make up the curved corner show. Could it be the way I applied the VRay texture? I have tried painting each face vs painting the group. Nothing worked. It almost seems like its reading those individual faces that make up the curve as individual groups. Thank you! Sorry this is so long.
@TheRenderingEssentials6 жыл бұрын
Not 100% sure, but it sounds like you're having a UV mapping error, meaning the materials are not mapped properly to the faces in your model. That said, I haven't really used SketchFab, so I don't know exactly how to fix it...
@icecreamish26 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the response! I played around with the textures a bit more. I noticed that its very different between painting each face vs painting the whole group/component. When I paint a group, I don't get the option to reposition the texture images on the faces. Im assuming the textures are "projected" onto the faces by the bounding box of the group? However, when I go in to edit group and select one of the faces and I do VRay UV Tool->Tri-Planar Projection, this then gives me the option to position the texture. My question is by doing that tri-planar projection, am I accidentally making a new "material", meaning is this face's material no longer the same one as the rest?

Hey, I am Sorry if i was rude! The technique you used, its in SU (except texturing) it will work for every other Rendering engine. From your Title i expect something inside Vray, Something like Lumion's edge. Btw, You videos helps me learning new things. Thanks a lot for that :)
