Building the basic scenery shell around my new lumber mill on my HO Scale Model Railroad. Making simple rock moulds and casting rocks out of plaster. Painting the ground cover and the rocks. Adding track and sidings to service the Walther's lumber mill.

It’s simple, cheap, and works pretty well for the look I want.

I just wanted to get “something” on all of the areas. Also, now stuff will stop falling through the gaps to the lower deck.

@@achb-railway yup, hear ya, have constantly stuff falling thru in tunnel, but not done electrical all the way yet, so cant close up yet, same reason not ballasted yet, but no more " plywood city" in sight, all brown/ green/ grey basic painted. Your layout looks nice

Great job on your layout. I've got a couple of Silver Streak wooden kits to build. One is a boxcar and the other is a caboose. Got several kits to build before I even get to them. Cheers from eastern TN

Thanks! I also have a few old wood/metal Walther's passenger car kits to build that I picked up at a train show last winter (along with a large stack of plastic cars and structures). I'll get to them all eventually!

Going back through you building of your layout, I was looking for the height between the three levels. Accessing your staging yard must be a bit of a pain, also the height of each section of the helix looks like 3.5 inches. Always looking for new ideas to incorporate in to my rebuild.

The lower staging yard is a bit tight - but my hand does fit in there. My lower deck is pretty much level at 43 1/2" from the floor. The upper deck (the lower track) is 60" from the floor. The upper staging is 66" from the floor. The helix is about 3 1/2" of rise per revolution. Some people told me it was too steep/radius too tight (22"), but it works fine with all of my locomotives and rolling stock. My biggest diesels are SD40s, and my biggest steamer is a 2-10-2 Mehano. They are all fine with it. My longest cars are the 85' passenger coaches. Everything else is 55' or less.

Not enough of a run for me to finish my bowl of popcorn. Maybe think about putting in a gravel road going across the main and siding to give the illusion of a larger operation. At the saw mill I worked at in my younger days one track was for unloading log cars the other was for loading wood chips and saw dust. So what you have created is a side operation for a switcher which then runs around to the finished siding and picks up loaded flat cars and leaves them on the siding for collection.

I was thinking of locating an old switcher at the mill.

We had a little critter which was replaced with a rail mover. Both of which moved cars into position ,the log boom as it was a royal pain to operate, was replaced with a old loader with 2 forks that lifted the logs up then tilted forward allowing the logs to roll down a loading ramp to the log feeder. The chip and sawdust conveyors feed material into open hoppers and and to be moved every 30min and 1.5hrs for each.
