Hey guys, well done! As a viewer of both here and of "In the Woodyard", Chris found that leaving a gap at the bottom as you did help not only dry the wood but keep the mold off of it. AWESOME use of supplies and a great solution to a problem. Keep up the awesome videos and stay safe!!
@AllenFamilyFirewood11 күн бұрын
I’m also going to try it on pine chunks to see if it molds more or less than stacking . We get less than 5% mold by stacking and the one time I dumped 2 cord on the ground we lost atleast half of it due to that white fuzzy mold . The hard wood is totally different and we don’t get much mold either way .

I think the bin will work good for the chunks . The rest of our wood nope . Takes way to long to load 2 cord on a trailer hand chucking each piece . I can load 2 cord in about 15 min when it’s all on pallets .
@906sisu511 күн бұрын
Good idea. You could also make bins out of the pallets the same size as the totes. That would make them moveable so you could still sell them or bring them home and burn them. I heat one of my shops just with chunks and construction cutoffs
@AllenFamilyFirewood11 күн бұрын
I did build one last winter they just take a lot of lumber an there a pain to make . I definitely could put a lot of time and effort into it but end result is no one really wants the chunks unless ya selling em for $50 for a 1/3 cord . My time is better spent producing $450 cords of hard wood than the $150 ones but I will use a lot of it myself .

Great video, Phil. That was a win-win win in the woodyard. Now everyone will be happy you have a bin like Chris in the wood yard. Lol, I personally like your system better. Your costumers know they are getting exactly the right amount of wood. It definitely drys better in piles. You can use a machine to load the wood rather than throwing it in by hand. When me and my dad and I were doing lots of firewood when i was growing up, we built rebar racks that we would pile the wood in. And when it was time to deliver, my dad would drive the 920 cat loader up to the pile, and i would tip the pile over into the bucket, and he would dump into the dump trailer. You would get about 3/4 of a face cord in the bucket when tipping it. I would rather throw 1/4 of a face cord than a whole face cord, lol. It saved a lot of time and wear on the body. Keep up the great work, my friend.
@AllenFamilyFirewood11 күн бұрын
The bins save a lot of time on the front end not having to stack but stacking on pallets saves just as much time on the back end being able to load 2 cord in 15 min compared to hand chucking 2 cords for a hr an a half . It all works out about the same but them chunks don’t stack so the pallet bin was the perfect solution . Sounds like you guys had it figured out perdy good back in the day .

Good one Phil. I like the bin idea. I made one for our selfs. And maybe gunna build another this spring/summer. That way. Once I start going thru the 16 cords we got last week we will need a place to put the split wood. So I’ll have a drying bin and a seasoned bin and we will alternate each year. But I built my bin 24’ long 8’ deep. So I have two end walls 8’ deep and one 24’ wall at the back. With the front 24’ opening. Easy to load into and out of. Just a thought. Have a great day Phil. 👍🏻👍🏻👋👋🪵🪓🔥🪵🪓🔥🪵🪓🔥

Hi Phil. Just a thought but have you ever considered making those upright brackets out of wood. Using sawmill scrap cut yourself some 1 1/4 in thick pieces and screw it to the pallet in a U shape configuration then just cover it over with a piece of scrap material. The 1/4 in.would give you upright board a little play. Will it be strong when you empty the pallet is questionable. Experiment with it on a coupe of pallets and see if it works out. It might save you a lot of money in the long run which would make Karen very happy. Mike

Holy buckets, I see solar panels in the background! I think there’s a kiln in your future, if only for the kindling and pine! Prolly wasn’t one of your problems today lol
@AllenFamilyFirewood10 күн бұрын
We got them this summer for free and plan to set something up for the shop but just haven’t goten around to it yet . Definitely going to take some research to understand how to set it all up .

You've gone to the dark side of not stacking Phil you'll never go back...haha!
@AllenFamilyFirewood11 күн бұрын
lol well for chunks I have unless I get more totes for free . I like my pallets for reg wood . Just so much faster at delivery time to dump a few pallets an go deliver instead of spending a hr hand bombing wood on a trailer . .
@iffykidmn817011 күн бұрын
Yep, for a guy worrying about not having enough dry wood next season a month of not splitting is a long time. 😉
@AllenFamilyFirewood11 күн бұрын
Well if I didn’t saw lumber I wouldn’t have lumber to build the pallets to put the wood on . I’d like to get more sawed to sell so I can afford to go buy more brackets . I need a few hundred more of them pallets but I did split some the other day
@johnricks163011 күн бұрын
Just take the brackets off of the old pallets and used them.
@AllenFamilyFirewood11 күн бұрын
Yup that’s what I did when Karen said buying new ones wasn’t in the budget .

Great job Phil! Excellent solution to the problems! What is your plan with the chunks? Are you gonna use them to heat the shop?
@AllenFamilyFirewood10 күн бұрын
I have already burnt 2 totes of the hardwood chunks at my house and a tote of pine chunks at the shop . If they don’t sell by this time next yr I will probably just keep burning them myself .
@NeighborlyHomestead10 күн бұрын
@AllenFamilyFirewood sounds like another great solution to the problem! 👍👍

What's will all of the solar panels sitting there? A project that keeps being put off?
@AllenFamilyFirewood11 күн бұрын
This summer we got all of them pannals for free just had to go get em . Some are perfect some have a small crack and a bunch are just plain ole scrap metal but the plan was to rig up something an get em working but I just haven’t had the time to build the rack to put em on and there’s a fair amount of studying I need to do before I try an make it all work .

Totes are good. pallets take up less space when not in use. Totes have their own set of issues as well. I’m sure you’re going to make lemonade out of the lemons in your life.
@AllenFamilyFirewood11 күн бұрын
I’m used to just working with what I have on hand . Lemonade outa lemons is easy if ya remember to add sugar. That’s my down fall I usually forget to add the sugar lol

Nice job, Phil. A bin for chunks and uglies. Get folks to come and get ‘em- xx$ per load or whatever…. A new revenue stream!
@AllenFamilyFirewood10 күн бұрын
Just not sure I want the liability of them climbing on top of that chunk pile to load there truck . Last summer worked good I just set a full tire out for them a they loaded it them selfs for $50 a tote .

@ good point. Don’t want any Darwin Award winners in the wood yard!

Phil I possibly have a bracket dilemma fix. (Maybe) you’re going to have to make them. Remember the custom tank build I rambled on about. I had to buy some material for it. I will have to look at receipt on price. Way!!! Way !!!! cheaper and stronger. Still two bolts.
@AllenFamilyFirewood11 күн бұрын
It’s just way easier to have them build em . I’m way better off doing what I’m good at ie splitting and taking that $ and getting more brackets , hard to beat a man at his own trade .
@BW35bucket11 күн бұрын
Super nice of you. That shows great integrity. I was thinking $1 bracket or less. Have a great holidays ahead to all your family and friends.
@johnricks163011 күн бұрын
Now you can build some more bins with all of the palace you have left over

Cheep hand break and make the brackets your self and all you are out is price of the metal.😊
@AllenFamilyFirewood11 күн бұрын
Dana actually priced it out and doing them myself wouldn’t save all that much . The big metal shops get there metal at about half the cost as me just buying a few sheets . Add in the cost of a break and I can make more by just splitting wood . Hard to beat a man at his own trade . Them metal guys can do in a day what woukd take me a week .

Phil, that is called recycling... You use something you don't need anymore to build something useful...you did a great job on the large wood bin...Karen , Phil is a very intelligent man, but he needs you to make him use his brain.....LOL.....great video...
@AllenFamilyFirewood11 күн бұрын
Well I never thought of it as recycling but ya right . We definitely got full use outa everything . We’re still gona need more of them brackets but it will hold us for a few more weeks . I literally need to build another 200 of them pallets before I have enuf so I can just go split wood every day .
@hotwheelmanraven228911 күн бұрын
It is a temporary good solution just loading them back up as a pain in the butt but for now at work I just sold four bins I make mine I just take one pallet and I put three sides three other pallets groom on my fill them up Ben’s and then people come for 100 bucks and I picked the whole thing up put the whole thing right in your truck I just sold a couple couple pens tonight hundred bucks a pop that what you’re throwing away in Connecticut is worth a lot of money right now people are desperate for wood
@AllenFamilyFirewood11 күн бұрын
Dang I wish people would pay that around here for chunks an short pieces . We get $450 a cord for the good stuff but I’m happy if I can get $50 for a bin of these . Sounds like you have a good thing going .
@asamelia512411 күн бұрын
How bout your old buddy Dana, you think he would use them chunks?
@AllenFamilyFirewood11 күн бұрын
He has taken them before from us but he creates quite a few himself .
@antiochman822210 күн бұрын
Now empty your totes into the bin and sell them - you will be $600 up rather than $1,600 down!

Now empty your totes and sell them and you will be $600 up!
@AllenFamilyFirewood10 күн бұрын
Can’t do that when people come here to pick up a 1/3 cord it’s way safer to have em back up to a tote an let em throw it in . Don’t think I want greenhorns up on top of a chunk bin throwing wood into there truck . My luck they would twist an ankle or break there leg .
@clubdoraoutdoorsandfirewood10 күн бұрын
Hi Phil. You’re trying to find space for your ugly wood. I know it’s more work,but your bladders are just sitting there, use them to hold your uglies. I cut 4.5 holes 6 per side and 9 on the bottom. I use them for stacked wood loose uglies. You can dump the bladders with the fork tin going into one of the 4.5 inch holes. Your bins your building look great. I built a Chris bin last summer. Won’t know how that works until summer. The only problem I see in the big bins is in the north we get snow like you get in Maine. For you it may work better because you don’t empty the bins until your summer bundle business starts. I just don’t see digging wood out of a bin with 1-2 feet of snow on the top. I think you’re on the right track buddy. Stop by and watch a video or two. Later.
@AllenFamilyFirewood10 күн бұрын
I saw them totes you cut holes in and had em full under a roof . I think the video was about what you had on hand for wood . I think I left a comment but I don’t always . The bladders I have all have a few gallons of some nasty stuff in them that I think is flammable but I haven’t tested it yet lol but if I ever get clean ones I’m gona try your set up with the holes in em and just give em to the customer when they come to get a tote full of. Once I get home I will jump over an ck out ya new video .
@jasonpeterson927611 күн бұрын
ya gotta do what ya gotta do phil.. I know that being down here in texas that is what ive been doing is buildimg wood pallets screwing em together to use for everything.. aint got nothing else to use that is free other than picking them up at places..
@AllenFamilyFirewood11 күн бұрын
It definitely solved a bunch of issues . At least now I won’t have to go buy more of them brackets and I have a place to keep putting the chunks .
