Creating Sustainable Temples: Banashankari Temple Survey Findings

In January 2024, Solid Waste Management Round Table in collaboration with the Banashankari temple authorities and staff, BBMP team, and several volunteers got together to transform Banashankari temple into an eco-friendly and low-waste temple. During the last five months, we observed several changes at the temple including segregation at source, composting, and waste recovery. Great initiative. If this movement can go Viral (todays Terminology) across all Temples in India, this can be a Gamechanger of a Majority of Indians Mindset towards - Waste, Cleanliness and Sustainability of Home Surroundings and Nation.

Some Ideas: A) Declare Temple Premises Plastic Free Zone (Prominent Board). Including Pooja Item Vendors. B) Prasadam: 1)Ensure Every visitor (>90%) bring own Steel Prasadam Box. Wash at Home. For unprepared visitors (

Outside the temple plenty of vendors selling various items for 10 rupees in thin plastic bags. It is because of the number of devotees visiting the temple. This selling spree in wrong manner needs to be curbed. Else what is the use of we buy 10 rupees brinjal and 10 rupees onion in two things plastic bags ?

Buying offerings is done in plastic bags. If buying is done, the plastic garbage is created. Whether it is carried inside or not. . Need some more work to make it more meaningful. Anyway, appreciate whatever great work has already been done.
