Creating the Pirate Ship's Wheel

How to Haunt Your House & The Mitchell Family bring you a pirate themed Halloween this year! This Hallows Eve the captain steers us through rough waters by way of the mighty ship’s wheel…. Made of hand carved wooden bones for spokes, each topped with a watchful skull, this relic has been weathered by the sea air, and turns true through the cool October nights.
If you desire a custom-made Pirate Ship’s wheel, then watch this video as we take some wood, Styrofoam, some paint and Monster Mud, and create a real working prop… perfect for photos and video!
MATERIALS: ¼-inch wood, ½-inch Styrofoam, Gorilla Glue, hot glue gun & sticks, jute string, Monster Mud, Dryloc (if using outdoors), craft paints (black, brown, red, gray), ½-dowel rods ( 8 rods), 8 medium size Styrofoam skulls, Hollow skull & cross bones (or made of Styrofoam), illustration board (or matte board), Googly eyes, Scrape pieces of wood ( at least 2- 5” x 38” and 2-1/5” x 20 approx.), 1”-PVC pipe (approx. 6-8” long) 1.5”-PVC pipe (approx. 5”), 1” screws, drill, hot tool (for carving Styrofoam), 1 ½” hole cutter drill bit, thin wire, black duct tape, sanding paper, and jigsaw

You should have used a black and gray wash. To stain the creases to show off all that awesome details you worked so hard on.

I saw you cut most of this out of half inch and quart inch plywood so why all the Styrofoam that's just crazy.

This looks great HTHYH! It's always wild to see how different creators approach the same prop and create a piece of art that is unique to their own style! I could smell the styrofoam burning though!! You should try to do some passes with a wire brush to create some texture on the boards real easy and quick and a quick hit with a heat gun makes a really quick and convincing wood grain! Regardless, great build and thanks for sharing :)
