The trailers old winch broke off, and that just WON'T do!
I decided to build the ULTIMATE TRAILER WINCH SETUP for this trailer! I custom build a heavy duty stand for the winch and added the ability to quickly install or remove an electric winch when the need arises. I upgraded a few of the winch parts, and added a few more places to tie things down at the front of the trailer
I also added a basket under the trailers A-frame to allow for storage of chains, binders, straps, or whatever else! The jack was also squeeking to be replaced, so I upgraded that while I was at it!
Once everything was built, painted, and installed, you'll see how nice this little hand crank winch really is, because we used it to remove an old broken forklift off the trailer by hand!
This entire project was a big thank you to my friend who owns this trailer! He let's me use it whenever I need it, and when I saw the broken winch, I immediately knew that it was time for an upgrade!
Have you done anything similar to a trailer or off-road rig? If so I'd love to hear about it in the comments!
As always your opinion is always valued, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on this project in the comments!

Kudos to you for taking the time and expense to improve your buddies trailer. He let you borrow it and you returned the favor by making it better. these days when someone borrows your equipment it usually comes back broken and your lucky if you even get a thank you. I can only say you are a rare find these days. .

You, Sir are the kind of guy that will help those who help themselves. As they say a good turn deserves another. Great respect to you. By the way, my Dad worked on heavy equipment for 60 years. He was a master mechanic and always used a method for bolts like I seen you do. Bolt Flat washer Lock Washer and a nut he would be delighted to see you doing that.

First time I saw some else use an idea that I developed 5 years ago to augment winch use. My use is in Australia on a modified bullbar with hitch built into the normal position on the bullbar where the winch would mount. Then if you got bogged and had a trailer on you could do a double winch or conversely you could move it to the rear hitch and pull yourself backwards out of the situation. Just requires some electrics to be added and jobs done! Thanks for sharing..

Nice fab project, and I gotta echo Mike Murray about giving other peoples' stuff back to them in better shape than when you got it. I have a friend and neighbor who has a tractor, and can borrow it at will; it goes back home clean and full of fuel every time. Awhile back I had a coworker I could borrow his boat from, and he asked me more times if I wanted to borrow it than I asked him if I could. And so what if I bought twice as much gas as I used, that's gotta be the cheapest way to be able to go boating.

After I got done rubbing dirt on the ankle, it was fine thanks to a good pair of boots! Not a bad idea at ALL! That would be great to add to my crates of rigging that I always take on my adventures! I also think I might add a 2" receiver at the BACK of the trailer to put the winch into so I can PULL things TO the trailer! I can see that being quite useful as well!

Seems like you made it a lot more complicated than it could have been. Understand wanting both winches as sometimes you don't have a good battery. And the 2-speed hand winch is handy for loads up to about 1500#'s or so. More maybe on level ground. And the universal square hitch mount can be very handy. But why the plastic rope and so much metal construction. Could have been done simpler I think. The dogs are great and of course right in the way. Good to see you primed and painted everything and the tool tray while complicated is very handy. Terry

My brother has an equipment trailer he bought last year that could easily use a similar setup. I'll send him the link and see if he watches it or not. Already did something very similar to this to my trailer years ago. Having an electric winch is nice on a trailer. Mine can also PULL yard debris and garbage out of the back of my trailer. Call it a poor man's dump-truck. I have a cable and pulley that runs underneath the trailer so it can pull stuff out.

Be sure to double check that the synthetic winch line is UV rated. Many are not. They are also prone to accumulation of grit which will greatly shorten its life, at least when compared to steel wire rope. As other commenters have suggested, a weather cover would be very beneficial. Just something to be mindful of since it will see a great deal of road spray while being towed. Nice build overall, as always👍

That was kind of you to build your friend that winch mount. It was an excellent skilled job. You're very skilled at welding and working with metal. I'd be careful with that wood floor and hauling forklifts. The forklift is a heavy piece of equipment. I had one fall through on the way back from Muskogee, Oklahoma heading back to Grand Prairie, Texas. Just make sure the floor wood isn't rotted and there's plenty of metal support for such weight. I use to haul tractor/ trailer tires with a trailer just like that. They're rugged but weight will wear a utility trailers bearings out and the tires. Also looks like that ramp needs modified for a smoother load and unload. I'd blown a few tires with to much weight on the tires, too. Just thought I'd let you know.

Great Build!! Looks very sturdy. Two points........ (1) Another youtuber said you shouldn't allow your dogs to be around when your welding because they don't know any better than to look at the bright arc. I had never considered it, but it made sense, so now I put my dog in the shop when I'm welding to protect his eyes. (2) I'd go back to the steel cable, you don't have the problem of a sharp edge severing it. You never see a Wrecker, or a Flatbed with a poly cable. Just food for thought. Overall, that was a hell of a nice job. At the end of the day, it's your winch & your decision. Best of luck.................................

Of course the metal work added almost exceeds the weight limit of the trailer. Maybe a third winch should be extended out the back of the trailer so that you can pull items off and down the ramps. Thanks for the good laughs. I did subscribe.

That, really looks nice, many good ideas-all put together. The re-used breaker-bar idea is so-smart, there are many old jobless b-bars out there for cheap! Good job.

That's a super job, the reason I like to watch you work. I never know when you're going to BEAT on yourself and I don't want to miss it. I'm sorry, I know it hurts. I've told you before when you build something you make it look good, plus overbuilt. This time way over, I have the same problem always have. I do like it, slow down with the taps, done that to. I don't know how many blades I've broken trying to get it out of a pinch. I've started taking the saw off and get another blade and saw at another place to free the 1st blade. Stay safe and Merry Christmas to the family.

Thank you Gene! I always try to show the REAL side of projects like this, and sometimes I get BEAT ON! Overbuilding something that's going to be pulling beautiful old machines up onto the trailer is WELL worth it for me! Last thing I want is for it to break right when I need it and ruin a one of a kind piece of cast iron! I totally agree on the taps! Thanks for watching and commenting! I truly appreciate the support! Lots more to come!

Finally someone that struggles with a band saw. I bought a Milwaukee corded saw and keep damaging the blades. I tried 14, 18 and 21 TPI on 1/4" steel.

Forklifts are a pita to move. But a great tool to have available. I have a little 3000 lb capacity Toyota electric forklift for my home shop, it gets a lot of use.

My friend! I see you have completely changed your videos conception. I think its became better and more interesting. And of course without control and assitance of your little helpers everything could be failed. Waiting your next video. Best wishes!

I haven't COMPLETELY changed the channel videos, I just added videos about OTHER projects that I have going around the shop to see if people would enjoy watching them! I'm glad you enjoy them, that is great to know! Definitely expect to see more restorations as well! Without the dogs helping, I'm not sure HOW I'd get everything done! As always Lexx, thanks for watching and commenting! I truly appreciate the support! Lots more to come!

@@SalvageWorkshop My friend, please don't be so humble. New projects have changed the concept of your channel. I especially want to note the quality of your videos. They have become more dramatic with unexpected final. Remember dramtic scene when you have broken 2 bolts. Or when you threaded using a cordless drill. It was like in a horror movie. I wanted to shout: "Now you’ll break the tap!" And Toby was distracted and did not follow. Wish you a Merry Christmas!

Great video and ingenious build. I'm wishing it was my trailer you were borrowing because I'd very much like to have that very setup on my car hauler trailer.
