Good morning, and just wanted to say that I have just watched Old Red series again. I just so love that piece of amazing machinery, have you any thoughts on if you are going to some more videos on Old Red soon?

I got a van Norman duplex mill for free, cause the quill was stuck. I've fixed up a lot of old machining equipment, and for me, 9x out of 10, some well meaning person saw what looked like a grease fitting, and pumped it full of grease, when those tight tolerances want a nice thin oil. I like to hose it down with something that will cut the now old petrified grease, like marvels or diesel. I can't remember the name, but they sell this little tool you fill up with lube, then put it on a petrified grease fitting and whack it with a hammer, it forces the fresh lube in past the crusty grease, and helps start getting it thinned out so you can flush it out. My duplex mill has the monster 5c taper head that can do vertical or horizontal milling, and then it's got a west german knockoff of a j head Bridgeport that attaches to the ram that supports the far end of the horizontal mill cutter spindle. I really like it since I don't have a ton of shop space. I mostly just do engine machining for a guy who restors 1930's ford's, and early willys, bore dirtbike cylinders for the neighbor kids, and work on my own junk. Oh, a slick trick on those van norman mills, they were available with a power feed that ran an indexing dividing head, so you can cut helical gears manually, without cnc! I found a small 10x45" lathe that can fit on my big mill table, you can do some whacky stuff with that combo too.

I'm 67 and I have to say that one of the things I get from your channel is that it gets me off my ass and gets me out fixing my own stuff that's been sitting around for years. You're good! I like the way you work.

Instead of modifying the smaller muffler, why not seal the existing exhaust hole and cut a new hole to work with the small muffler?

You can stack hole saws into eachother, and use the inside smaller one as the center, to center the bigger outer one. Thats how we make 3/4 or 1" etc punch outs on electrical boxes the next size up.

Should brace the muffler to the engine that way it moves when the engine is vibrating while running

You should never wear a hood shirt with string on, it could get hook in to motor and put your face in to the motor!

For safety reasons the 240v outlet should have a double pole breaker. If only one of those breakers trips the other side of the line will be hot making for a safety hazard. Very nice restoration!

You should have fitted resilient rubber engine mounts with earth bonding to the frame on one mount., you may find that manifold may crack through engine vibration with the silencer being mounted solid . But you have done a great job well done 👍
@csnelling42 күн бұрын
Have you done earth/ground bonding tests ? Engine and generator to frame and panels after all that panting of panels and frame?

Decades ago, I got my hands on some aluminum roofing that had been in contact with the ground. In some places, it crumbled into white powder. When you said aluminum I remembered that white powder.

to answer your question as to why you had to hold the start button for an extended period of time is because of the lower voltage. you did not have enough voltage to hold in the run contact. running at 240 vac 3 ph will naturaly give you the voltage to hold in the contact.

I know this may seem weird, but i think ya should do it. Put this video on a flash drive and put it in a little keybox on the inside. In 20 or 30 years when someone repeats this process that would be a cool time capsule for them to find and may help them in the process
