I still have one of my underglaze references from my ceramics degree! I chose to lay them all out on a sofa that I had slipcast. It turned out to be one of my favourite pieces

Another tip I'd add is add a groove into your slab because some glazes when pooled look much different, so it's always nice to see what it would look like if there was texture!
@birdietamАй бұрын
That's a great tip! I'll have to do that next time
@evrenviggiano2969Ай бұрын
at the ceramics school where my mom teaches they have all their colors in different jars and each jar has a swatch tied to it with what the color looks like once baked. half the swatch is matte and half is glazed so you can just look at the little tab hanging around it and know immediately. it's really really useful
@akitoyaname7897Ай бұрын
Yup! Had a glaze that looked yellow and came out blue with green specks! Luckily i knew, since the pottery studio had those swatches too, otherwise it would've really thrown me off

Oh glazes can be absolutely wild! My pink glaze turns blue 😂

Honestly the slight red/pink to the fox makes it endearing

Great idea. Mr Wedgwood did something similar to this as he was developing his own glazes and enamels. There are hundreds of small numbered pieces. It’s fascinating to see his progression with the ones he deemed successful for his requirements. You can view the collection online I believe.

I always did this with new colored pencils from shading light to heavy. That way I know exactly what I was using/needing and this is a great way to use this trick!

thats what was going on in my art class too. my favorite ones were the ones that had little crystals of colors that would “bloom” out when fired. i miss that class. ive been meaning to get back into ceramic work but i dont have the money to go to a workshop to do it and i live in a studio apartment so theres NO way i could get a kiln

Had a “purple” underglaze turn blue and it was heart breaking. I painted two things with it and now I really don’t wanna put the second thing in the kiln bc it’ll completely ruin it
