Creating UNLOCKABLE SKINS, DIALOGUE, and COMBAT for my indie game - Devlog 4

In this #devlog I create unlockable skins or costumes, branching dialogue trees with custom UI, and melee combat to my indie game. It's a 3D platformer with a creepy, scary psychological thriller dynamic added on top.
As a solo game developer with no experience with coding, the process is slow going but steady. While I like Unreal Engine, I've been making this game in Unity using Playmaker. I also use Blender 3D and Krita to make the art for my game. While it's not a tutorial or how-to series, I do go into quite a bit of detail in ever devlog so that you understand the work that went into this as a solo game dev.

I think adding blinking animations to Tillie and the snowman head would help the characters feel more "alive '. I'm impressed with how this is turning out and I thank you for the frequent updates.

Maybe this isn't the route you're going but I have 2 peculiar ideas. Like when you're character dies he crumbles into rigidbody pieces like "how the cookie crumbles" and checkpoints can be ovens you respawn from

I've been thinking about whether or not I want to add in checkpoints and what they'd look like actually. Ovens are a really cool idea actually but I don't know if they'd work solely because there's an entire level that takes place in an oven in the game

For things like the hit bloody screen effect, you could try make it so it fades away instead of instantly disappearing, and for the corpses, you could also make them dither away, or maybe shrink and create some kind of smoke particle once it's fully shrunk and gone, or make a shader that makes it "disintegrate"

I feel that the NPCs should only comment on Tillie’s death if you’ve reloaded the scene. This would be pretty easy. Just save the state of whether Tillie is dead, then check that state on your Start() method and set whatever bool you’ve used to true. Amazing progress on your game so far! I wish I could support it further.

I'd speed up the run animation for your character, or decrease the speed in which it moves. As is, it looks like its sliding. Also, maybe Tilly should flash red for a frame or so whenever she takes damage. That would help the hit animation read a lot better.

Oh it definitely would and some enemies will do that but for my purposes I'm just designating anything that you are able to kill as an enemy- even if they don't actually pose any threat to you. It plays into the idea of your morality as a player
