+Cristi Neagu Hoving tries to trap Randi in his juvenile circular argument. He thinks he smart because he thinks he's found a way to trap some scientists in this circular argument, because they believe in the scientific method, but yet there is always some small doubt about being 100%. We can never be 100%, but the evidence can make it almost a certainty. Then he gets the other guy to try to continue the argument in another circular way... Randi obviously didn't know who they were.... What a dishonest person Eric Hovind is.

ghiiitrooper Here it is: "The last gentleman asks James Randi: What is the evidence that your reason is valid? How do you know your reasoning is valid? drum rolls Evidence! If someone uses reason to figure out something they don't know, they will get a certain result. If this result matches up with reality, we can safely assume that the reasoning used to solve the problem is valid. We say we have evidence that the reasoning is valid because what we predicted has actually happened. And it is proven again and again. For example the way objects fall on earth, if you drop an object with a mass of 1 kg from 1 meter height, you can predict exactly how long it would take for the object to hit the ground. You can predict it using the scientific formulas which are derived by reasoning and validated by evidence (evidence being the fact that what is measured/observed matches up exactly with what was predicted). So when the last gentleman in the video asked what the evidence was for Randi's reasoning to be valid, he basically answered his own question: Evidence makes reasoning valid. Oh by the way, is there any evidence for God?"

@@ppatrick1a1 Hey the bible isn't stupid rather it's words are alive. Sir the bible has two testaments the first is the old testament which shows that we are in need of a savior through the ten commandments. For instance, if you lied you're a liar if you've stolen your a thief, if you used Gods name in vain you would be punished by death because you're using the holy name of God as a curse word or as a disgust which will make you a lying, thieving, and a blasphemer. The new testament tells us how we can be saved from the punishment we deserve. 2000 years ago Jesus Christ of Nazareth came into this world to suffer and die for our sins on the cross. Now you might know that, but you might not know this before Jesus died he said three words ''it is finished''. So all you have to do is repent which means to turn away from your sins and confess it to God and you can do that by trusting in Christ alone.

It's only circular reasoning if the source of the text is just from a human, but if it indeed is from a supernatural creator God like the text claims, then it is by definition not circular reasoning. The question is, was the text inspired through human hands by a divine supernatural intelligence? Then you'll know if it is indeed circular reasoning or not.

These same questions can be applied to religious beliefs. How do you know the Bible is inspired or is the word of God? How can you prove it without taking it on its word in hopes that it is God. You can't so you try to use your beliefs, which can also be wrong and most likely is. The scientific method has a process to achieve knowledge and to wash out inaccuracies as best as possible. Religion has no such process and the standards are far weaker than science's standards. Science has a certain confidence in their claims because it's tested or observed to support their claims. Religion is the hope that something is real without the support to back it up.

Also, to any christian out there that buys into sye's bullshit, ask yourself this. How do you know god is actually good? You use reasoning to make that assumption. Or if your preacher told you, he used his reasoning, or if someone told him, whoever told him used reasoning, etc, etc. Even if it goes back to god telling moses himself he was good, there's no reasoning given to justify god's claim he is good. For all moses knew he could have been talking to an advanced alien who mastered telepathy and thought projection to make him think he was seeing a burning bush and make him feel the fire as cold. The fact remains a desert slave wouldn't know any different. And since in the end all you have is someone telling you something and you just being expected to believe it without question, we atheists deconverted from our respective religions, and why we encourage you to do the same.

Ivo This is wrong, you haven't done your homework on Kent Hovind. They broke around 20 laws to put him in jail. This is how the world works, when someone is doing a really good job exposing lies, which actually bilk people out of their money and make them into slaves, they find a way to put them in jail, it is a historical pattern. Galileo and Copernicus, who were bible reading men, who said the earth is not flat, were under threat from the Catholic church and Galileo was put under house arrest. This is usually when these men create their finest literary work as they are highly motivated to really work for truth while in jail.

Adele King Aha! You are BUSTED! 1) I have done my homework on that cheat and there are *many* easily obtained public sources available to you as well. 2) Kent Hovind was convicted on 58 felony counts. He is a criminal and, fortunately, behind bars where he belongs. 3) Judging by your deliberate attempt to deceive, I suspect you are a sock puppet of either Kent Hovind or his son, Eric Hovind (a distant second place to Kent in the shyster-oration skills, but he's trying very hard to carry on the family tradition of dishonesty). 4) He hung himself with his unfettered greed and has no one to blame but his own avaricious self. 5) It is absurd for you to mention Galileo and Copernicus in any of this. Next you will compare it to the Holocaust. Hovind already did that (or should I say "you already did that" or maybe, "your dad did that") in a public statement). 6) When he is finally released, I suspect his following will have dwindled substantially. The remaining adherents shall heretofore be referred to as: Kent Hovind's tax on the very credulous. 7) This is precisely how a just world is supposed to work. It doesn't always, but in this case they have a reprehensible wolf wearing an orange ape suit. Quite appropriate for that charlatan. 8) Kent Hovind is not the martyr he's desperately trying to posture for; he is a criminal who harms young minds.

The best part of this video was Bad Religion playing in the background, cause the rest of it was terrible. If this is the best you creationists can put up, then I think this argument is pretty much over. How can I validate my reasoning? By observing the results of my reasoning. Harassing an 80 year old man with semantic tapdancing isn't exactly the best way to prove anything. Moresoover, I'd like to know what makes a Christian presuppositionalist different from a Muslim presuppositionalist, and why one is right and one is wrong. In fact, presuppositionalism isn't even an argument, since the exact same formula can be argued for the existence of literally anything. Sye Ten Bruggencate regularly gets his ass handed to him on a silver platter when he finds his way into a respectable debate. AronRa, Matt Dillahunty, you name it. James Randi, as much as I respect him, is not a theological debater. He's a skeptic, and trying your philosophical baiting with him is borderline offensive. Again, if presuppositionalism is the best you can offer, then I think we can write you off as grasping at straws now. We've got logic and reason on our side, you've got the denial that logic and reason exist on yours. I'll let that speak for itself.

On multiple occasions in history, it has been asked how we can know for certain what is true and what is not. For example, it is possible that instead of being many billions of years old as the scientific evidence strongly suggests, the universe was actually made last Thursday. It is also possible that the entire world is the creation of your own mind, like a dream it takes you several decades to wake up from. Attempts to attach any objective importance to speculations on this topic may alternatively be called bullshit. doesn't really matter. the real question is: is it logical to believe in any supernatural force?
@Snailman3516
@Snailman3516 10 жыл бұрын
answer: nope, you must prove that a supernatural force(like god) exists, not that one doesn't exist since the burden of proof is on the one making the claim. since every claim of the supernatural was not proved, the only logical conclusion is to not believe in a supernatural force at all.

Sye Ten Bruggengate is really, really irritating with these silly word games. Reason isn't a 'thing'. It isn't a knowledge claim, it isn't an entity, like say... a God. it is something we do with our brains. well... something some of us can do ^_^ If you re-word the question as, "is it circular to use our intellect to come to rational conclusions", then you can see the argument laid bare for the childish nonsense that it is. As Randi correctly pointed out. Qudos for allowing comments BTW.

This 'could you be wrong about everything you know' doesn't work Hovind always says that starting from 'god' he can know with certainty that his reasoning is valid and that god is necessary for all knowledge, but this is monstrously incorrect. To establish god in your mind, you have to have already assumed the validity of subject-predicate language (and thus by extension logic, since language is the product of logic), individual thought, existence of the universe, existence of the self etc. - you cannot have the thought of god before these things. You have to validate your thought before you validate reasoning by your thought of god's necessity. Without validation of the thought, by the same reasoning Hovind employs, you cannot validate the god that you have established _via the thought_. 'God is necessary for all knowledge' is itself a knowledge claim. How do you _know_ that god is necessary for all knowledge? You cannot justify the aforementioned claim by invoking god again since that is tautologous and meaningless. Also if he were to ask me if I could be wrong about everything i know, I would simply say 'no'. I know that I am not omniscient. If I can be wrong about that we descend into paradoxical chaos.

Christians... He literally claim to be all-knowing of the origins of the universe the origins of Earth Origins of life, They literally claim to know the fate of our Consciousness after death, (if we will even have one) The fate of Earth's future and the fate of the entire universe... If a human being could look in a mirror and stare deep into his own eyes and tell himself... "I KNOW with absolute certainty what takes place after I die..." Then he is betraying his home human intellect and successfully Blurred the lines between faith and knowledge surpassing a human's mortal conceptualality

I love how Eric skirted James statement that it's the believers responsibility to provide evidence for a god--it's not an atheist's responsibility to prove a negative. If you make a supposition just be prepared to back it up for pete's sake! You say your version of god exists--then provide the evidence!!

Why is this video used to advertise for Sye and Eric. If you use Sye's reasoning, he couldn't possibly KNOW there's a God because his reasoning could be proven wrong with the vast amount of knowledge we don't have yet. Do religious people really flock to this nonsense as evidence?

James Randi is very patient here, tries his best to explain what logic and proof mean, but the silly and ineffective attempts to trip him up keep on coming. And then the follow up bit with the holy music behind it says that "God exists because God says he does ". Well there is your proof of, erm, sorry but I can't go on. I would be very embarrassed to watch this if I was a Christian.

Based on your conclusion that "God" exists because the "Bible" says he does, Please answer the following: Does this mean that all of the other religious texts on this planet that purport to reveal the existence of a divine or divine beings are also valid? And if not, then why are you assuming that your "God" is valid and all others are not? What is your proof other than the "Bible"? Why can it not also be assumed that the other religious factions on the planet are also valid in their assertion that their religion is the one true religion because it says so in their religious texts? I propose that you are not trying to prove that there is a "God", but rather to validate your belief in the "Bible" that proposes that he exists. Please prove that the following statements are false: 1. The Americas were settled by the world powers as a giant land grab and not for the purposes of religion. There were some colonies started by religious groups but not all of them. The world powers of the day didn't care who went to the Americas, only that they went to stake their countries claim to that continent. 2. The Revolutionary War and the eventual establishment of the United States government was founded on "no taxation without representation" and not on "religion". 3. Based on statements number 1 and 2, the United States is not a "Christian" nation as the religious propaganda would have the masses to believe.

Yes ultimately all knowledge of what is beyond our own minds must be based on the idea that we can trust our senses which we have no way of verifying as accurate without using our senses. Very clever, but Christianity is not exempt from this fact anymore than reason is, so saying that we cannot trust anything includes your god.
