#piecedbacking
Ever find yourself a little short of backing yardage? Just not quite enough?
Or have two, but don't love the look of one harsh connecting seam?
Enter the “zippered" pieced backing. It's a creative way to join two different backing fabrics that softens and blends the transition.
This method is so helpful when:
1) you don't have enough of any one fabric, and you can't find more so you hunt for any two in your stash 😉
2) you have 2 highly contrasting fabrics; this simple pieced solution softens the transition
In my case, the quilt this backing is for, was made in the 90s, and I could NOT find a good color match, so you'll get to see what I came up with on the live show.

I came in at the end of the "Live" episode. I am so glad for all your recordings, this one in particular. I prefer using 108" backing fabric because I do not like sewing large pieces of fabric together. However, I think I could learn to like it more, using the zippered backing method. Thank you for sharing. As always I learned something new from you.

I've made many quilt backs using one piece for the center and "frame" that piece using another complimentary fabric. I love your zippered idea. Will give it a try with my next project!

Nice to see you sewing today; not just longarming. That said, love all your formats. Ordered my Laurastar today-I’ll get it Tuesday 😀. Ordered through my local machine store that has been wonderful to me and a great resource.

I have a quick question that I am hoping you can answer. You showed us how the one side of the backing was not even - how do you make sure that your quilt backing top and bottom are centered on your longarm poles when loading? I was taight that the backing had to be completely straight before loading or you would not find the same centers on your backing. Hope this question makes sense.

It makes sense completely. If you want some of my Live and Unscripted videos where I’m loading you’ll see this in action. My method is to have the front edge straight, and forgo the need for centering or even having the other 3 sides squared up. I do take steps to keep things straight and even, but it’s far easier to watch it than read it here😁

Missed the live I had my grandson this morning. If I have fabric I am not fond of look at the wrong side. It may come closer to looking better than the front side. I've done this several times. So far no one has noticed it. If they have they've not said anything about it.

Why is it called "zipper" backing? I am not a native speaker
@StitchedBySusan
@StitchedBySusan 2 ай бұрын
I think because it looks a bit like a zipper, in how the two fabrics overlap and blend.
