I bought an R88 years ago after watching those one mic videos by John Cuniberti, it was so revealing and sounded incredible. This may sound strange but I ended up selling to free up cash as it actually revealed limitations in my room that I couldn't change at the time. I have a much better room now and might consider picking up one of these new ones. That being said, the Stager SR-2 stereo pair is working for me quite well right now...

R88A sounded killer. Would like to see how these mics compare with, say, the Coles 4040

I have the R88 with the RPQ2 pre and they are a game changer combination. I cannot express how happy I am with that combo used on a drum kit.

First listened on my phone speakers as I didn’t have headphones on me. When it went from the N8 to R88A on guitar, I actually said “Whoa”. I could actually hear depth, more low end, and a nice image. Then listened on headphones and heard even more low end, obviously, and it wasn’t too much. It also sounded like my head was right in front of the guitar.

I'd love to hear these on piano. I actually kind of liked the passive R88 best. I liked the mellowness of it.

What's your take on the Soyuz 023 in comparison to the AEA R88? Mostly interested in vocals. Thanks for another awesome review!!!
@JBSound-x3p Жыл бұрын
Awesome comparison! I'm curious what the R88A sounds like with a different pre like a warm-412 since it doesn't necessarily need to be paired with the AEA pre like the passive R88.

I wish you'd put the two r88 mics next to each other in the video!

Hi, thank you for making this extremely helpful video! I now own an AEA R88A, partially thanks to this video. I now revisited the video, and have to ask: what is that acoustic guitar? Looks like a Taylor, is it? Which model is it? Very curious because it pairs beautifully with this microphone. Thanks!

Always great to see what you're putting out. I heard the 88s as VERY similar with maybe a touch of pre-EQ in the A. I especially noticed it on the acoustic part. It was more tailored as I would treat a ribbon in the mix - a little more top end and the bottom controlled a bit. The N8 sounded VERY different from the other 2. I liked them all. I'm a huge fan of ribbons. The only AEA I own right now is an R92. I have a pair of Lundhal Fatheads and an RCA77D. This video really made me want to consider buying a pair of N8s! I'd like an 88A too, but I think the N8 would be more different from what I already have. Thanks Ryan!

Great video as always. Did you recently move a computer and monitors into the live room? Keep the videos coming!

do you feel you could get the same 3D-ish sound by combining two mics, using the old fashioned 1 cardiod front facing, 1 fig. 8 side facing as R88A?

Uuuh, they all produce really alive and full sounding overheads! Love it! I might be blinded by the "crystal clear sound" syndrome, but I love the N8 sound on both the drums and the acoustic. Feels like the guitar is whispering in your ear. :D Low end warmth definitely a notch better on the original R88 though!

I’ve been saving up coupons for the r88a. Thanks for this video. 👍 Sounds so good.

The R88A would definitely require less EQ for most sources. I'm sure it has a lower noise floor, too. They all sound great.
@relaxmax68084 жыл бұрын
I hear the same , lower noise level too .

do you think some of the difference is how hard signal is hitting your preamp? what was the gain like between the old and active versions?
@RS-pp7ng4 жыл бұрын
very cool sounding. I just wish you'd do a video with both the kick and snare center aligned :) cheers

What is a good beginner ribbon mic for rock guitar other than the Cascade Fat Head?
@sebastienrichard59654 жыл бұрын
Does the u47 like microphone on the kick is on? If yes, maybe check the phase between the R88 and the R88A. If everything is in phase, its fair to say that the R88A have way more sub frequency compare the R88!
@creativesoundlab4 жыл бұрын
I think I left if out so all you are hearing is the ribbons.

2 questions here : 1 . You say you have the R88 first version , so this is not the MKII . Have you try the MKII ? 2. You have one mic in front of the kick , it is your way to record drums ? Cause i would like to record like this : one stereo overhead and one in front of the kick . it seems to be a condensator mic you use ? Do you have a LOVE ONE MIC FOR RECORDING KICK DRUMS ? Thank you. ( because i think we love the same sound ;) )

Nicely done, Ryan. Thank you for the fine review/comparison. Not whining when I say this kind of $ is out of the range of practicality for my needs. Still Cool to dream though...

Should use the R88A as a center mic with the pair

I hear most "breath" noise on the old model . The new one is cleanest .With R88A the kick has AIR !! when the firt R88 just a little !! So big difference on drums much than on guitar i fell.

R88A all the way.

I think the R88A sounds a lot like the R88 with Royer dBooster in this video review- the volume bump (using either the booster or the active mic) seems to add more definition. The N8 pair is nice on the guitar with the midrange bump adding clarity. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqvNl3Zjr52fpZY

Really better than the passive version. Very defined and soft in the same time. Dynamics are impressive too.
