Important Note: I forgot to mention to use SOLO SAFE on the "Tone track"! - If you solo a track, it doesn't disable the whole set up.

OH man, i hate to break the news after all the effort but Sound Radix have a free plugin called Muteomatic which auto mutes on playback/record. Can also be setup in reverse to mute reverbs etc to make talking to a vocalist easier. I usually have a duplicated room track with input monitoring on smashed with a compressor with Muteomatic on it to make it easier to talk to a bunch of musicians in a room too. p.s super creative way to rig up the auto muting, i never woulda thought of that.

Get Cubase - it has TalkBack mic setting built into the "Control Room" along with other great features like multiple reference setup that bypasses the project and auto dim switches as well as huge RMS meter so you don't need an extra plugin. Cubase is the shit.

This is... a fantastic idea. Thank you for this inspiration. You could, if the mixer supports it, send the output to sidechains on a digital mixer, so that the talkbacks don't even depend on the DAW being loaded up.

In the pre-DAW era we used a Drawmer gate in duck-mode sidechained to the SMPTE-timecode signal to accomplish this. But nowadays the free Muteomatic plugin is the way to go.

In Ableton, each track has three input settings: Input, Auto, and Off. With Auto, the track output will be on monitors only while recording or playback is paused. That gets us right to the point. If you wanted to review playback with the group and keep TB on air, you may choose Input to keep TB always on.

Took me a minute. The tone track only plays and triggers the side chain of the compressor when you hit play/record.

Thank you for the tip. This is a good advice, but there is a much, much easier way. There is a free plugin that does it all. Just put it on the talkback mic's channel and you are done. The plugin is called Muteomatic and comes from SoundRadix: www.soundradix.com/products/muteomatic/
