In this video, I explain the basics of how to make your own talkback microphone. I go through the basic materials, the process of building it, exactly how to wire it up as well as the practical applications.
The video is very light on the technical side and should be easy for even a beginner to build

Sorry. Less than ideal, I'll stop short of saying wrong because it sorta worked. Here's why. On your first try, you've taken a balanced audio cabled and are shorting the signal (+) onto the signal (-) by using the switch (the pedal state is normal closed ie. has continuity) thereby you've defeated the intended design of the balanced circuit. When you pushed to talk, the circuit resumed its straight-through design and the vocalist could hear you properly on a balanced line. The reason your first iteration picked up lots of noise was because to dampen the signal you shorted + to - it didn't really work, it just created a very noisy mute condition. Your second iteration, where you've "jumpered" (read: shorted) signal (+) to ground means the cable is now completely shorted out. Signal (+), Signal (-) and ground are all tied together, therefore no sound is possible. A dead short is what it's called. Luckily it's low voltage and low current. When the switch is activated (opened) you've momentarily created an unbalance circuit by allowing half the circuit, signal (-), to flow along its line. Let's fix this! Dump the mAudio foot pedal which is a singled poled normally closed switch. Get a momentary dual-poled switch (dpst dual pole, single throw) and rewire it properly, just drill a hole for the new switch on top of the project box you already have. Fundamentally you have a good idea by using a foot switch, but you're running the risk of damaging equipment with this design.

I'm just seeing this, but you are why this virtual world can be AWESOME! Sorry my response is so delayed. I appreciate your vary tactful and respectful response. You obviously know your stuff! I've known that it coulee be better but just never put the time aside to figure it out. I'll follow these steps carefully and upload another video. Hopefully, sooner than later! Your comment entry made my day! Thanks
