There are so many options! You can wrap the entire bottles with a hemp twine, you can use paint and apply it with brush...it's up to you!

I didn't do anything special. I spray painted the bottles and left them for 3-4 hours to dry, and that's it! I'm not sure what happened in your case, maybe the spray paint wasn't appropriate.
