We went fulltime in early 2014 in an older motor home. He was 67, I was 60. Our budget was tight and a planned job, selling advertising on those campground maps, didn't work out. After about a year, repair costs on the Dolphin had eaten up our savings, so we returned to Arkansas and sold the beast. We went into an apartment. We've been here 2 years now and have had a change of fortune. We had to decide between buying a small house and buying a new truck and 5th wheel. Our monthly budget is now quite comfortable so that didn't figure in. We followed our hearts and, on Friday, purchased a 3/4 ton pickup and a 30' 5th wheel. It's just enough for us. In six weeks, we're off on our dream. Loving life in The Back Third...2.0! Your videos, along with a few others, have given us so much more information than we had five years ago. Thank you!

I too want to thank you for your very honest comments. At 72, I’m wondering if a solo full-time nomadic life is for me. As you know it’s a big decision. Your story is pushing me further toward either a manufactured camper van or having one built out. Safe and happy traveling!
@georgefenrich41195 жыл бұрын
@@janicemckinnie6965 If I may... I would get USED and the smaller one so you can get in-n-out of areas. There are some nice built-out vans online but shop for a while. New are junk and used can be too, but they may be fixed by then and better to just try out what you like. Building one you own (or by a shop) is going to cost a lot! again, look on Craigslist.com Best of luck.

Thank you SO MUCH for your candor, honesty, humor and grit! I bought a '99 Honda Odyssey a few years ago, pulled out all but the front seats, and used it to haul my elderly mom and her walker around to appointments, haul groceries and antiques, and a rare overnight camping trip away, etc..but she passed away in March, and there went my income (as her live-in caregiver, it was all hers). I emptied the 3 bd/2 ba apartment, sold what I could, donated a ton, put the rest into storage, put my cot bed in the van (I was already sleeping on a camp cot with a 4" pad in hopes of a Tiny House future!!), along with a 5 gal bucket toilet, an Inergy Kodiak solar generator that is still dependent on shore power (for now), more stuff than I needed in the way of foodstuffs and odds and ends, (which gets offloaded into the storage unit), and my 2 adorable cats!! We've been staying at the homes of friends/family, using their electric, shower, washer/dryer, etc, and two full months into it, I'm kinda over it...but only because it's such a small space!! I need a place in which I can at least stand up, and possibly cook a bit. I'm hoping to teach ESL/speech coach/accent reduction online, but have to find clients! (Working on that) Currently looking at a 90s Ford E-350 bus with the seats already removed, and a funky/cosmic paint job on the outside-- I am cautiously excited at the chance to personalize it, vs. the motor homes I've looked at with their hideous color schemes and narrow passages. I have officially boondocked one night on a street in San Francisco --felt perfectly safe, had no problems, and it was quite exhilarating/validating :D Now, off to watch more of your videos!!

Hi Robin. A wonderful series! So much good info. I have had multiple RVs but could never go full time til I got my current 2000 Bounder 36s MH in 2005. Even though I was a full timer at last, I used it mostly for business travel. I had debt and the work kept me in one area. Finally in 2014 I was able to retire and leave for Key West where I was on a lot for 4 years. I did take some good trips in 2017. Now my lot has been sold and at the age of 87 I am actually on the road full time in Florida using Thousand Trails and state parks and Walmarts for my camping needs. A little late to the game but really enjoying it. Just wish I could have made it happen on this level many years ago.

I have been planning my nomadic lifestyle for about a a year now, and like most people, have had things to deal with before leaving, along with deciding on a rig, figuring out money, disposing of my bricks and sticks "things", etc etc. I have to tell you this - I have watched literally hundreds and hundreds of nomadic vids in that time, learning as I go, and among all those other vids, there are 3 people I keep coming back to for REAL information, and you are one of those 3. I have watched all of your Be A Nomad vids from day one, and have to say that you have given me so MUCH useful info that I totally plan on incorporating into my (hopefully) soon to be nomadic life. I literally CANNOT thank you enough for this dedicated, investigated, and down-to-earth info. I hope to meet you some day in order to shake your hand and say THANK YOU!!!

Hi Robin ~ I love your wonderful clear, positive, informative Videos! I'm a 'classic retired RV full-timer' who came into this lifestyle in 2006, at a time when I saw mostly older RV travelers. It's incredible how much has changed in 13 years! I'll be 70 next year and I still love this lifestyle and I enjoy meeting so many people of different ages with various stories and goals. And one thing remains true - expenses continue and inflation is a fact. It's sometimes a puzzle, no matter 'age', to keep going. So these videos are very helpful even for those of us who have been nomads a long while . :)

Robin, your series is excellent and so is the extraordinary research. With the popularity and increase of many becoming nomadic, eventually more than hinder the probability of accommodating this life, various businesses and opportunities might expand in ways to accommodate nomads. Hopefully, abusers won't change the positive. I've heard many choose...if they decide to settle from their travels...in finding an ideal spot where they buy property accommodating parking their rigs as a home base, then continue to travel as desirable. Some even set up communities. I think it's an ideal situation and look forward to when I'm able as well. Safe travels.

I just love you! You are doing such a great service to all of us contemplating this life or living the life. You are inspiring! I am continuing to prepare for my departure and I'm living in my travel trailer now in the driveway of my house as I prepare. This morning when I awoke it was freezing in here and I realized I was out of propane! It was cold and dark and I didn't want to go outside to change tanks. So I'm learning how long the propane lasts and need back up for heat. I have been living in my current home for 8 years, prior to this I was always moving around. I have moved over 40 times in my life. After seeing these videos I realize I am a nomad and need to get out an explore, meet new people, and realize my life purpose more fully. I believe being a nomad and having that kind of freedom will allow me to do it. I am a breast cancer survivor and know the importance of moving through fear to live a full and meaningful life. I know one day our paths will cross and I look forward to meeting you!! Happy travels!!

I am really enjoying your videos, I would like you to do one about the long-term planning of becoming a nomad as well as long-term RV costs or the real costs of replacing your RV as it gets old or what it costs to go back to an apartment etc. Eventually, maintenance will catch up with your RV or parks will consider it too old. I would think you will need a significant repair or emergency fund down the road. A lot of young people are heading out without any real idea of long-term costs or how they are going to pay for them or saving for the day you can no longer do this.

Very talented lady. I’m a part timer with a stix and bricks. I think most of the KZbin videos get people in trouble. Road life is far from perfect and far from low cost! Plenty of cost and problems come up. Proceed with caution! Houses and taxes aren’t that bad if you buy and more to areas that are within your budget! Mortgages are very low interest unlike living on credit cards and such. Rigs will drop in value like a rock! Finding parking in unknown areas can be a very big hassle and could be dangerous! What happens should you get sick on the road? Do your research big time before you jump in! I found there’s no way that I can spend much longer than a couple weeks in a dog house on wheels...

I started TOO small. My "rig" is a T@B 320S, which is a teardrop. My new dream includes UP sizing a foot or two.... Great stuff! You have one of the most informative channels on KZbin. I have about 1/2 dozen I watch that have original content. I do disagree with one point, (politely of course). This is not the first time in history where Nomadic life was popular, although during the Depression years it was not always by choice. Read "The Grapes of Wrath" while sitting by a campfire :) The folks being "tractored off their land" was not a misnomer. Many families lived in their cars and the ones with trailers were the lucky ones.

I agree, and thank you. I meant that this is the first time in history that we can be Nomads and work from inside of our rigs. It allows us to travel freely and make a living, which is absolutely new. Other nomadic tribes and in the depression and covered wagons, were stationary or going from place to place an order to find food or fresh pastures, we don't have to do that we can go wherever we want because we can make a living from inside of our rig. That's all I meant! I love your comment thank you very much

This is what I believe I will be doing when I retire . I am so tired of working to pay so much for basic needs and the up keep of a house! Electric, gas, water Etc. I want to read books again, I want to know the lyrics to all the music I like again, I want to see all of the country that I haven't seen. In 6 years when I'm of retirement age my house will be paid for... see ya 💕 I myself was kind of worried about all the people who are taking to the road and hoping that laws don't change ruining my plan to become a nomad.

Things will change ...less people will own cars as driverless cars become an option. Get out there sooner ...,,

I have 6 years to go too, Eve. (And actually my van's name is Eva!) Things may change but we can still do it.

Soon as the house is paid for could be a little less than 6 years, it will be on the market. That's my money to buy a rig and add to savings. I don't have much debt in I don't create much that either so I'm good there.

Before I would go full time mobile, I would make sure that I could bring in money prior to going mobile. You could do that by seeing if you can be successful working from home or remotely prior to getting an RV. It can be pretty difficult to develop new income streams after you become mobile if you haven’t developed income streams prior to going mobile.

I have a full time job I don't plan to give up anytime soon, but I've been thinking very strongly of living in a stealth van so I can park almost anywhere. My problem is making it happen because I will get no support from my family to help if I convert a cargo van. I live in a two bedroom apartment for $475 per month and to live closer to work would cost me more. I would love to do what you do, but my talents to make a living while traveling is not very good. Love your videos.
