I was homeless, living in my car. The safest place I found to spend the night, was the LDS Church, parking lot. I spent a few days there when the Bishop and missionaries came to my rescue and put me up for a month in a safe motel. That gave me time to get a social worker and get approved for housing. I had lost everything and they gave me food when I was hungry. Two weeks after I had to leave the motel, I had my own apartment and Social Security. Because they helped me, I was able to help myself. I'll always be grateful. Just saying, there's help out there for the homeless. If you swallow your pride and ask for it. No Senior Citizen needs to be homeless!

My brother was a manager at Walmart. He said that he didn’t have a problem with overnighters until his parking lot crew kept having to clean up trash and wash away urine. He said he hated to change the policy, but it became necessary to do so.

WOW!! Since I subscribe this episode just popped up. First thing I noticed was that it was 3 years ago;-) Good for you sis! Second: GREAT information! Third: SMALL WORLD! The Salida Walmart is great and happens to be where my parents shop. The manager there is great and it's an outside of town Walmart so I'm guessing it's still a place where RVs are welcome.

Thank you for this! My daughter works for a security company that patrols a Walmart fresh market which shares a limited parking lot with a strip mall of stores. She knocked on the door of an RV that was camped there directly under a sign prohibiting overnight camping. She was very polite and explained the situation & was met with horrible people shouting F bombs at her and they went so far as to throw scalding hot coffee all over her middle and pants. Thankfully she had good tactical pants on and wasn’t injured. And she said their RV was disgustingly filthy. The door barely opened and shut due to garbage all over the inside which spilled overflow outside. They had their camp table and stover, also all set up. She called for backup and police officers had to come to settle a ridiculous situation. And guess who needed up moving their RV? It’s bad apples like this who ruin it for the rest of polite and classy RV’ers.

Like one Walmart manager told me, "If I can't tell whether you're inside your rig or inside my store, I'm not gonna bother you. If you make it obvious you've set up shop, I'm gonna shoo you off."

Agree with all of that. Walmart parking is not a right, it's a privilege. So be considerate of other patrons and Walmart. Another thing I don't like is when a rig pulls up and 5 dogs jump out and run all over the place pooping and peeing and owners don't clean up.

One catch. $100 a year is extremely affordable by many versus $12,000+ a year for a single bedroom apartment. If many becomes a member, good luck finding a spot to sleep overnight. I don't think Walmart want their parking lot full of RVs and they'll limit how many may park there.

@@thomasottvideos - Well, that's true that there are self-entitlement attitude involved but I am pretty certain EVERYONE wants to save money, including you. You may have a place to stay but not everyone has a luxury like you do. I'll admit, I have that luxury but chose to live in the van. I lived in the house for 21 years renting. When my landlord decided to sell the house, I had to move out after paying over $160,000 in rents to my landlord. I looked for an apartment and finding a single bedroom "box" costing $1200 average while I paid $1025 a month for a house. It's ridiculous. Nowadays it's harder to rent an apartment on Fast Food income than it was 30 years ago. Granted, my income is not that bad. - You want to talk about entitlement? Greed had gone rampant in housing market. On top of that, those damn entitled housing investors hog up low cost homes, fix them and flip them to a point unaffordable to those in need of a place who once could afford yet complains about homeless problems. Those entitled landlords try squeezing as much money from you by raising rent and not all of them are properly caring for their property. I am certain you are entitled to some degree. We all are. We're just damn tired of giving money to landlords while we get stuck in the box to watch that damn tv. I made my choice start traveling instead of letting my landlord do all the "traveling for me".

Problem with those that write/vote "certain" city ordinances into law... they often react in a irrational/knee jerk fashion. (eg) Instead of punishing INNOCENT RV travelers, etc... (that are supporting the local economy and NOT abusing Walmart's overnight RV policy)... city ordinance writers should INSTEAD be writing the ordinance in such a way that ONLY punishes SQUATTERS (wait for it...) with a $Ticket/Fine$ (and a TOW if necessary) which you would think cities would be all in favor of, seeing how it would not only solve the main problem but would also generate $EXTRA REVENUE$ for the city...

It is easier to outlaw all overnight RV's than to require police or private security investigation of the circumstances surrounding each RV.

One or two people can ruin a good thing for thousands. I noticed we are beginning to get panhandlers that have a huge RV parked in another part of the parking lot. I followed a woman the other day in a van, she was dropping off guys with signs at WalMart/at two interstate exits and convenience stores.(total 6 guys) I followed her as she picked them up, she pulled up behind an expensive RV parked in WalMart. It was traveling panhandlers.

Jenny it is that way for a lot of things I would say 95% of people try to live a responsible life (maybe that number is a little high). We pay higher car insurance because of drunk drivers and people having their eyes on the phone instead of the road. Certain stories have to pay high insurance because of theft we pay more for the 3 to 5%.

Robin, two thumbs up -- but not for the obvious reason (that this is a good video). Nope - the reason I'm giving you big kudos is how you ALWAYS consider being a GOOD CITIZEN in whatever you do, and you urge others to do the same. This is hugely more important than most people think about, mainly because many (most?) problems in any society are caused by people who selfishly do not consider others - such as the pee-bottle-leavers or trash-dumpers or free-parking-abusers ... they only want what's easy and convenient for THEM and forget anyone else who has to deal with what they do. You nailed it! Up until last year, I use to be a overnight manager for a Walmart that was quite known for being a great place for RV's to stay over for a night or two. Up until everything you showed kept happening. People were literally treating the parking lot as their personal camp site for as long as they could, making messes, hanging cloths out to air dry and all the other stuff you mentioned. It's never any good when you have people who abuse a privilege, then we all suffer Worst of all. Being a manager, I had to be in the ackward position of telling some of those people in the morning to leave before going home. That's a story in itself. Thanks for bringing awareness!

@@Simmons64 -Drug addiction and chronic alcoholism coupled to the new way states are legally mandated to deal with mental illness after the ACLU made it impossible to institutionalize the most vulnerable of patients. The new treatment for the mentally ill is "Bridge Therapy". Bridge Therapy is where they go live under the bridge, off their medication and left to their own devices. Add that to opportunistic liberal politicians of the ilk who see homeless people as a new identity group and potential voting block... you get the deterioration of our cities as we now are experiencing. Not to mention over 300 drug overdose deaths every day, and epidemic level violence and property crimes. This is where we wind up when we elect the wrong people to run the show. You have every right to kick them out. First, it's the store's property not the city's. Second, they're taking space a trucker might need when parking a rig so he/she can go shopping. At least in my town, the truckers aren't rude and almost never have anything hitched when parking. They only bring the rig and some don't have the sleeper section so I can tell they aren't abusing the parking space.

As a trucker, I understand your frustrations. I try to stop at Walmart once a week to buy groceries and other things. It can be challenging to find a location that allows for it in some areas. Sadly, too many have abused the privilege. Truckers, RVers, etc… Tossing out human waste and trash in the parking lot is just nasty, and pure laziness. Parking at the edge of the lot helps to be tolerated. I always buy a good amount of stuff when parked there. The prices at truck stops for anything are high! On the topic of truck stops, it’s one of the very few places where we can park, so PLEASE don’t take truck parking spaces if you’re not driving a semi. After driving for 10-11 hours a day, we NEED to sleep, or we cannot safely operate that 80,000 pound vehicle, which places everyone at risk.

Ask. I always ask. Follow the rules. I am always so impressed with how nice and helpful most people are. If no, there is a underlying reason not controlled by the people I talk too. Be nice to them. I always shop no mater what. It seems 24 hour Walmarts are easier - anecdotal. I try to pick up one piece of trash, or bring in a cart - something. I got to make up for the ones that dump their black water tanks on the lawn - and realize, those bad apples are not embarrassed or shamed by anything nor do they value following rules, so be careful challenging them.

I have been a nomad for around 10 years give or take and I have parked at many many Walmarts I've seen pretty much everything you've seen people running generators all night and so on one thing I do do before I pull out is walk around the parking lot if I see trash I pick it up and once in a while I'll even push a few carts up front and of course I spend about $100 a week at Walmart so if everybody pitches in and picks up a couple pieces of garbage when they're parked at Walmart maybe Walmart wouldn't be so hard on us.

A Walmart where I'm at currently has signs that say "Current Customer Parking Only". I've actually seen cars booted there that had apparently been left for days, so i was nervous. But I noticed that I was still seeing some RV's and trailers parked around the edge of th elot. I was getting some propane and when the manager was helping me I asked her if they did indeed allow parking. She said yes, they just ask that we park near the perimeter, AND in the back parking lot. I thought, "what back parking lot?" So I asked her. This WM is on the side of a hill and it was completely not apparent that a side street went to a 'hidden' BACK parking lot. It was huge and nearly empty. She said that parking back there was preferential but I would have never known if I hadn't asked.

I'll add that Wal-marts are FULL of managers. As a result, you may have four and five different "Managers" working in a typical work day, and could have one manager say, "Sure! park all you want" and another tell you that you can only park overnight, and a third threaten to call the police. In the larger cities, if one tells you no parking, you can generally find another store in that vicinity that will let you stay overnight, just ask.

This reminds me of couponing. I loved doing this a few years ago and then that stupid couponing show hit the airwaves. More people got into it and they got greedier and greedier. First they started wiping out entire stores of products and then they started using fake coupons. To make matters worse many of them had terrible attitudes and screamed at cashiers for even questioning any coupon. The result- about 95% of all couponing deals are now gone.

Great info, thank you! We have spent the nite in several Wal-Mart's around the country. We traveled with 3-5 RVs and "huddled" on the edges of their parking lots with our generators going for air conditioning, because it was August by the way. No one complained about us. We do try to "aim" our generator noise away from the lot toward the street, and only ran it while sleeping. Several years ago we stayed for a few nites at a Wal-Mart near Ashville NC and the security guard said they would keep an eye on our rig while we were out visiting local sites (we travel with a motorcycle in a trailer) as well as while we were sleeping. As long as you are respectful, don't take advantage, are neat, and leave the area as clean or cleaner than it was when you got there, there shouldn't be any problem staying (not camping) at Wal-Mart.

In San Diego the supreme court judge just ordered that it is unconstitutional to ticket someone for sleeping/living in their vehicle. They are also working to get the no rv parking between 2 and 6am lifted due to the huge homeless and displaced disabled residents we have here.

Driving on a road is a priviledge but that vehicle is my property and if I want to sleep in it that is my right. Governments think they can make up any laws they want. If I told you that you can't sleep in your house you would tell me to go fly a kite. Well, the van is my house so I can sleep in it if I want. i went on a 4 week car dwelling trip in May & this video explains so much. I was frustrated & shocked by how inhospitable cities were to travelers. And I thought I was relatively prepared for this! Even the Walmarts couldn't always be counted on! ESPECIALLY on the west coast; restricted or no public bathrooms or parking, even electrical outlets were purposely not placed in lobbies or dining areas to prevent people from lingering. I thought CA was the most strict in not allowing people to function there without a permanent address. I kinda felt like the state was passive aggressively directing me to get the **** out. All I wanted was a spot to park & sleep for a few hours! Thank u for this info and cant wait to hear about more friendly spots!

Its finding somewhere that you can be at night that is the bigger issue. Also, i was not prepped for boondocking. I was mainly referring to populated areas. Even so, there's not just free blm land or national parks at every corner everywhere you go. Most land is owned by somebody or some company so unless you have connections or people just seem to like you easily and will make exceptions for you, it can be quite challenging.

Yeah, I agree with John except as to slideouts. As Frank correctly pointed out, they're designed to be out when not traveling -- in most cases, when the slideouts are in, there's no room inside the RV. When they're in, you often can't access the kitchen, bathroom, etc. I think that as long as you're parked on the outskirts of the parking lot, slideouts are not a problem. It's the other stuff -- bad behavior -- that causes problems. Things like, as John said, making noise, making a mess, "spreading out" with lawn chairs, cooking outside, etc. Ya just gotta be cool and keep a low profile. :-)

Yes. As I said, it is often impossible *_not_* to use one's slideouts. But if you're parked at the outer edge of the parking lot where most people _don't_ park, it shouldn't be a problem. Slideouts, by themselves, are not unduly intrusive or distracting. They're just a modest expansion of the outer edge of the RV. They just sit there quietly. And again, you're parked in a remote part of the parking lot where few other people are parking, walking, etc. But yes, keep a low profile in every _other_ respect -- don't put out lawn chairs and a barbecue grill, don't play loud music, etc.

After a few years of driving a 18 wheel trac-trlr rig, I developed the trucker way-of-life of driving all night and sleeping during the day. Years later, when living in a Class A, I used the same technique. All the restrictions are on 'OVERNIGHT PARKING". No-one bothers you when you park 10 - 12 hours during the day and sleep.. No camp set-up, eat at a restaurant and park in a shady spot.

As a 20 year Walmart employee I can tell you that management at most 24 hour supercenters will not make you leave their parking lot even if the city has a no overnight parking ordinance but you do run the risk that the police may come by and knock on your door and tell you to leave. If you ask management if you can stay they have to say no because of the ordinance but if you stay anyway they will not tell you to leave unless that store has a problem with crime in their parking lot and they don’t want you to stay for safety reasons. There are five Walmarts in my county three of them are in the city limits the one I work at sits just outside the city limits and there isn’t an overnight parking ordinance for the Walmarts in the county. Even though the city has a no overnight parking ordinance they only enforce it at one Walmart because it is a hop skip and a jump from a “high crime neighborhood “ therefore not safe for overnight campers. Until recently the Walmart where I work has never had a problem with overnight “Parking“ we just had respectful RVer’s. Starting last fall we had a huge problem with homeless people living in their cars in our outer parking lot we also have a problem with homeless people living in camps in the woods around our store and they have built several value motels that rent rooms by the month along the same highway as our store now we have a huge problem with shoplifting and people taking our shopping carts and electric martcarts to haul their “loot” back to their motel. It got so bad that our store had to buy special shopping carts and electric carts with locking wheels and we now have sensors embedded in the parking lot so when they try to leave with the carts it locks the wheels so they will not roll. After there was a stabbing in the outer parking lot this spring the police finally ran off the “Squatters” and we left the crime scene tape up for a little over two months to keep the squatters from coming back and when RVer’s came to ask us if it was blocked off so they couldn’t use it we told them no that they were welcome and they could park over by the garden center (which is where we were sending the actual RVer’s before the stabbing) but we were leaving the crime scene tape up to try to keep the people living in their cars from moving back into the outer parking lot. Thankfully the police have been regularly patrolling it for homeless people and making them leave so it is now safe again. Also after a murder suspect was found living in the woods on Walnart property we paid to have the under brush in the woods around our store cleared out so you can see into the woods now. But that only pushed the homeless camps further away .This is not a problem just at our Walmart but it’s a problem at many Walmarts across the country so please pay attention to the crime rates and the part of town that these Walmarts are in to make sure it is safe for overnight stays. This is the first video of yours I have seen so I don’t know much about you or your feelings on guns for self defense but being female and having grown up camping I know it’s a completely different world out there now. I highly recommend anybody who is camping wether in an RV or a tent a campground or a Walmart parking lot to take a gun safety class and to own a handgun for self defense.

As armed RVers that periodically spend substantial amounts [surveys indicate in excess of $70 average per each night stay] and 'camp' overnight in Walmart during trips to destinations, for a number of years, we have noted a strong uptick in the problems you describe, over the last ten years. Society, with modern education, has degraded to a notable amount, lacking in personal responsibility and decreasing morals. What great information you provide. I have been amazed at some of the things I've seen in the Walmart parking lot in my town. Once there was a RV with slides deployed, grill and chairs set up outside and the TV antenna up - at 1pm in the afternoon. It's no wonder why some Walmarts are no longer allowing overnighting.

I absolutely dread seeing those panhandlers approach me at Walmart and I have stopped shopping when they are in abundance, for fear my vehicle will be broken into. Hi, I just discovered your videos and wow, I love them. Regarding Walmart ~ I've been full time for the past 9 years just so you know. You had excellent info regarding Walmarts. But the sad thing is that most of the worst of the offenders (garbage, peeing, living, etc.)will never watch a video or seek info as to how to be a good citizen. Thanks for posting this. I sleep in my camping decked out hatchback when I travel. I’m usually arriving at 3AM or so and leaving at dawn so it just doesn’t make sense for me to go to a campground. I hope I can continue to find Walmart’s. BTW, since I arrive so late I turn off my lights and don’t drive too close to the other campers (just close enough to feel safe). I’m very careful not to slam doors and not accidentally set off car alarm like I did one time. And like you said, I go buy a good $10 worth of something

I have stayed in numerous Wal Mart parking lots, the negatives are noisy big rigs running all night, bright lights that make it hard to sleep, and the positives are security and a store nearby with restrooms and essential items. In every place I've stayed I have bought something, blankets, pillows, food, medication, shoes, and numerous other things. In Ontario, Oregon we got kicked out and I almost fell asleep driving to a rest stop 1 hour away. Thank you Wal Mart for providing over night stays. I am now I looking for other places since many parking lots are becoming over crowded - industrial areas often work well. I drive an SUV so I try to stay below the radar and not take too much room, be noisy or leave garbage. If you do go to Wal Mart for over nighters bring ear plugs, covers for windows, and as the lady said, have patience with thoughtful neighbors.

I'm not an RV'er...but...sometimes I have to sleep in a parking lot. This, mind you, is due to Parkinson's induced fatigue- in other words, sometimes, I have no choice. The last time I found myself dealing with fatigue, I happened to be inside a Walmart. I asked to speak to the manager...who was very understanding, and not only did he, during store hours, allow me to have a nap in one of the changing rooms, but he had security set up a coned off area for me in the parking lot at dusk- I parked inside that area, and was undisturbed , except for when security changed shifts and came by to make sure I was okay. Mind you, I have a medium-sized SUV- nothing even remotely fancy- in other words, no beds, kitchen, or pretty much anything else. In the morning of my impromptu stay, the day shift manager rapped on my window, offered me some hot tea, and regretfully told me that I would have to leave. Not a problem, the fatigue attack was over...and away I went.

Some of the problem lies those that write/vote "certain" city ordinances into law by over-reacting in a irrational/knee jerk fashion. (eg) Instead of punishing INNOCENT RV travelers, etc... GREAT INFO! On the subject of slideouts -- we have a fifth wheel that has two slideouts. For the particular floorplan we have, you have to open one slideout to get to our bedroom, and then to get 'in' our room, you have to open the other slideout so we can go to bed. So, if you see us boondocking, which we just did for the first time last week, you're going to see both slideouts extended. That being said, we asked permission, told the manager out situation, and parked so our slideouts extended over the grass. They were very understanding and kind about it and we also had a wonderful meal in their establishment. Common sense and courtesy prevail!! 😉

I stopped the video at 2:25 to say this is my experience in Goshen, IN. There are signs all across the perimeter of the parking lot. I’m not an RV’er/nomad, yet, but I didn’t rely on the trucker park not far from me. I went in the Walmart to see the manager. The customer service person said it would be okay, but I told her I would be back shortly. I did and she said he said it was okay. I started transporting RV’s as an extra stream of income. The question becomes; are nomads with a stealth vehicle less prone to detection and problems. I'm converting a small box truck (22 feet bumper to bumper)designed for in-town deliveries. Much like an all white Fed-Ex truck. The only tell will be roof vent fan. No windows, no solar. Regardless of city ordinances how will anyone know if that truck parked in a plaza with a Planet Fitness or Anytime Fitness at 3AM is a patron or associated with a business - or if someone is snoozing inside. Didn't want a pick-up with a slide on camper or RV since they attract attention.

But I would think it would still be suspicious seeing a box truck parked in places were a box truck would not normally be parked. Maybe you could spend money and get some fake business logos painted on it, but still, it would still look out of place, I think. Also, box trucks have been used in the past to carry out terrorist attacks, like filling it with explosive fertilizer, so a box truck could raise red flags in that respect as well.

At the eclipse last year a few of us decided to meet up at an out of business Walmart in Rexburg, Idaho. When we arrived the manager of the Albertson's was stapling up "no parking" signs. We asked him if he might change his mind, and after 30 seconds of thought he removed the signs, asked us to stay in the old Walmart side and please ask people to park within the lines, which proved to be an impossible task. Some parked right in front of the Albertson's, right across the spaces. A lot of RVs refused to park within the lines, one guy with a huge toy hauler and truck managed to take 20 spaces, parking in the center. Until then I wasn't aware that Walmart managers get a lot of complaints about the RVs. A lot of people don't follow the rules, they put out the slides, put down jacks, unhook trailers, run generators, and, people with composting toilets, or no toilet, empty the liquid in their planters (sorry, it's true). I'd love to see Walmart require self contained vehicles, charge a nominal fee, and not let people who abuse it stay. Nomadic Fantastic will tell you he always takes 4 spaces, if not 6, for a 26 footer by parking down the center. It makes it easier for him to leave. No fair parking in the end spaces. This summer's trip, up the west coast, California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Canada, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona, I stayed at quite a few Walmart's, most of which said initially no, then would say its ok, and thanks for asking. In Taos, New Mexico, they said no, then changed that to ok. Then a nice older couple pulled in, didn't ask, parked across as many spaces as they wished, had liquids leaking out on the ground, (it was water but looked really bad), made a mess trying to fix the leak with spray foam and ran their generator the entire time. "We need the AC." There was an RV park around the corner, they should have stayed there. I have to add, it's not up to you who can put out slides just because you have one. DON'T DO IT.

Many rvs have to putvslides out in order to get to sofabed or bedroom or bathroom. The mfgs need to make opening the slides optional insread of mandatory.. So many rvers do not think over how the rv will be used for a quick stay or nap before buying an rv.

When I see one of those huge toy haulers on the road I wonder just where they think they will put it. And, it can cost $300+ for a night in an RV park for a max length spot, if they have one. You certainly are limiting yourself if you have one.

A really nice presentation, thanks. My Mother, an ornithologist, used to travel long distances and would ask the police to let her & me, stay in the parking lot & we'd leave in the morning. I never forgot that. A few years back around 3AM, I was driving on Rt. 80 in the Poconos and suddenly got too tired to drive any further. I stopped at the State police station and asked the officer at the desk if I could stay in my car till morning and he told me no, find a motel. Left a bad taste in my mouth. I just bought an Aliner and will remember this option for overnighting at Walmart. I will also check out the apps you mentioned. Thanks!

In Bend, Oregon Walmart has had ongoing issues with homeless people living in old dilapidated rvs in their parking lot. They pan handle with signs at every entrance and exit. Leave garbage everywhere despite Walmart providing many garbage cans throughout the parking lot. Those bottles of urine along with "doggy' poop bags full of feces and used toilet paper seen often despite the fact that the store has restrooms. This Walmart used to allow rv overnight parking but ended it a few years back because of these issues. Despite the signs that say no overnight rv parking, they are doing rv tow away sweeps every month after posting notices on offending rvs. Yet, despite their constant battle with the local homeless, when my rv broke down on the road and I went and talked to the manager they happily agreed to let me stay for 2 days while I did the repairs myself. They also gave me a spot to park which was far away from all the rvs they had planned to have towed off the next morning.

ps I just wanted to mention that the spot they gave me was close to the store by the auto repair and tire department. The manager stated that this area had regular security drive bys throughout the night. He did this without my having to ask...why? Because he knew I was a single female traveling alone and he was concerned about my safety if I was to park near their parking lot homeless encampment. I thought this was very considerate of this manager and wanted to be sure and give him props :)

I found the same at a Walmart n Yakima WA. Security person told me that they kicked everyone off the parking lot. Then it took a crew 5 days to clear and steam clean the lot. Steam clean to remove feces and urine and whatever else was stuck on the asphalt. WTH? No wonder they won't let any overnight camping there anymore!

I was born & raised in Bend Or. I remember when the kmart mall was the big mall. When I returned after being gone for 15 years, I saw wall to wall Hispanics. You never saw one when I was growing up -even after I was grown up. What in the world does Bend have to offer ALL of these people? Saw more Hispanic people doing the jobs. Doesn't surprise me that there's a problem at Walmart. I sure wouldn't live in Bend again for any reason. Heartbreaking to even say that.

Wow we just found you wonderful video and we are just getting back into traveling with a Trailer again. This is wonderful info. It's good to know if you present yourself in a proper manner and are in a pinch that Walmart and some others are willing to help. Sorry to hear about the local municipality factor...but changing circumstances have led to that!! I park in Walmart lots in TX, OK, & MO in my little Saturn as I've driven from New Mexico to Indiana without staying in a hotel. You've probably noticed that 24 hr Walmarts are also disappearing fast.

sorry but in the states we travel in during the summer months you have to have air so generator is a must if you dont you would die from heat stroke that is just the way it is

Overnight parking was banned at my local Walmart when commercial trucks knocked over three parking lot light poles in one week while backing up and turning around. It costed thousands of dollars to replace those poles. Truck drivers also used our parking lot as a toilet leaving feces, toilet paper, and other trash behind. Sleeping and leaving was not a problem but trashing and destroying property can't be tolerated anymore.

When I was driving a semi, I discovered a set of books that make Drivers lives so much easier. The first is the the truck stop directory. Most truck stops have RV parking that does not interfere with truck driver parking. Truckers need their sleep. Another is called The Next Exit. This directory tells what is at every exit on the highway system. Think outside the box. A truck drivers goal is to maximize his hours and travel the most distance possible. So knowing every possible parking place is a must. There is also a directory for strip clubs. They don't mind truck parking and welcome RVs.

*exit off the Interstate system, but yes a big help when planning mileage too. Truck stops are filling up faster now than they used to. More of them on the road too, so now more spaces are needed. You could easily have 3 places planned now, and not find parking in any if you stop after 8pm.

i was always looking for parking for the next time i was in the area. the trend is with so many new drivers, is to park at pilots, flying hooks, loves, etc. so i watched for mom and pops, empty warehouses and factories, anything that took freight, or i could belly a big rig into. lots of trucks at a factory mean lots of wait time. blend in. dead end roads, and cut offs. are open territory. pretty much anywhere a terminal is, there will be parking. i never had a problem finding parking and i trained drivers and trainers for the last 10 years i was a driver. I never parked on an interstate exit. its illegal for one, if an exiting vehicle, drunk driver, mother of four, or a combination of both, ( it happens), hits the back of your truck at highway speeds, it's the truck drivers fault for being there. wouldn't park on an entrance ramp either. how good is the sleep when your at an angle, with cars driving by every few minutes? customary visit by the police to make sure you are okay, nobody is really sleeping. trip planning is crucial whether your in a truck or in an RV. Shepherd or sheep. no one wants to drive all day without a place to sleep. planning destinations and contingency plans saves hours. after 20 years and a couple million miles, you see how small the country really is, and your just figuring your trip plan in your head as you go. and you can always count on strip clubs and mega porn stores. before I retired, i could tell you the exit for every walmart and porn shop with truck parking on the eisenhower interstate system. here's a piece of driver trivia, old hands knowledge. When you're driving down the interstate and you see signs for gas stations and diesel pumps, the really tall signs will have truck parking, the shorter signs are for cars. Good luck.

Nice video with good information. Speaking of other RV friendly retailers, I found a Cracker Barrel in Nashville, TN which was very accommodating. Very clean and nice bus and RV lot behind the store. Management just emphasized that while we could stay there, they accepted no responsibility for any damage or loss to our vehicle while we were there.

This is what happens when people take advantage of a company's or person's hospitality. I have a very positive view of RVers. Before and during the time I was a City of San Bruno Councilmember, I fought and successfully turned back a City of San Bruno ordinance that prohibited people from parking RVs and boats on their driveway. This was back in the 1990s. Today, in San Bruno, people can still park RVs and boats on their driveway because of me and a few folks who helped me. That being said, many cities and businesses have very negative views of RVers. City councils in many cities have passed stringent laws prohibiting or severely limiting RVs from being parked on city streets and/or private property. When a city, company or town/city resident allows one or more RVs on their property, they don't expect that their hospitality is going to be abused. When it is, they stop allowing RVs to park on their property. Most RVers are good, decent people. However, there are just enough bad actors in the RV community to give the rest of the RVers a bad name and trigger RV restrictions. Finally, it is difficult for the RV community to police itself because RVers are usually on the move. Also, RVers are very independent people who are probably not likely to allow a group to dictate rules to them. It's up to each RVer to keep their site clean and leave the space where they parked, as clean or cleaner than it was when they arrived :-)

Thanks for all your videos. We aren't full timers, don't even have an RV yet, we're pop-up campers, but are planning on purchasing a travel trailer in the next year or two. I've been watching videos and soaking up all the knowledge I can before our purchase and your videos are so helpful and entertaining. I was wondering about potable water, Wal-Marts and truck stops and you were a one stop wealth of information. Thanks for putting it out there. Enjoy your nomad life!

As a store cleaning supervisor at Walmart, I can say that semi-trucks are a much bigger issue than RVs. Trucks tend to not buy anything, leave piss-bombs everywhere, throw their trash on the ground, and use the bathroom sinks as a shower. Plus they knock over cart corrals & back into a lot of parked vehicles. And almost all of them have their generators running all night. But the thing with trucks that I haven't noticed with RVs is the crime. Having 20 to 40 trucks parked in your parking lot every night attacks prostitutes & drug dealers.

@@heartlandranchtv4943 You're wrong with that, if we didn't have a WalMart we would have to drive 40 miles to a pharmacy/grocery etc. We are working people that live in rural areas, we work just like anyone else. There is no reasonable housing in so many areas that have let their cities become crime/drug areas if you can't afford a gated community and the apts are gated but still full of crime you have to move further and further out, but the employment are in the large cities. My small town''s 24 hour WalMart is on an interstate exit, we in our little town are not the dregs...

Great review. You can also find in a Walmart purchased Rand Mcnally which will show you where and what parking is available inside. They use a map key you'll find in the index and yes, it is highly recommended to ask the store manager. I drove 15 years over the road across 48 states and Canada, some truckers and RV'ers have ruined it for the rest by #1 dumping human waste and trashing the parking lot. However, plan your routes ahead of time and be courteous!

Great video!! If only more people thought like you. I always feel safe at Walmart and goodness knows I’ve dumped enough money in that store to justify using the parking lot overnight. People just don’t seem to quite get that it’s an overnight parking spot - not for “camping”. Some just ruin it for everyone.

I don’t RV I just started to get home sick where I lived most of my life. So I have looked at quite a few camper van n RV videos. Hoping to find a work around for the San Francisco area!
