CREATOR PIRATE SHIP: Build & Review

This pirate ship has been on my watch list for a long time now. I am very happy to have it as part of my Pirate themes area in the basement. I am really hoping LEGO continues sets along this theme.

The 31109 set is the most epic of all the pirate ships released by Lego, starting with the iconic Barracuda 1989. The color combination is almost perfect, the size is great - not too big, not too small. It seems that many fans of the Lego pirate line only care about the size of the ship. And no one appreciates how many awesome things have been crammed into such a small set as 31109. Sails made of bricks are awesome for two reasons! 1: Over time, they will not be damaged like fabric sails, 2 You can build/place any logo or inscription on these sails, also change their texture, shape, size, etc. And fabric sails ... well, they turn yellow, they deteriorate and will still look the same. Please note that in such a small ship, the lower deck is made for guns, which is not present in many iconic Pirate ships from previous years. An additional platform was also added under the first sail, which was also not done in many previous models. The shape, size and finish of the ship as well as the proportions of length to height and width are PERFECT. The texture and amount of detail blew my mind. Compared to the new barracuda, it looks much better and more interesting. The construction entirely of small blocks makes it look like a sculpture. The barracuda next to it just looks dull - it's flat and featureless and its square angular front of the upper deck looks just plain ugly. Barracuda is a bigger model, but it's simply simple and doesn't really bring anything new to the Lego Pirates line. I can't understand why brick fans don't see the genius and perfection of 31109. For me, it's the best-looking Lego Pirates ship ever made. Adding that you can build the other 2 options from it is great. The tiny minuses are the steering wheel, only two cannons and a small number of crew but these are really details that we can change ourselves. I could write a lot about this small but brilliant set. I bought it for Christmas (I couldn't believe how cheap it is!) Now I look at it every day, touch it and play with it every day. I predict that after its withdrawal from the official sale, its price will jump really very high. And I will repeat again - those who admire the Barracuda and often ridicule this smaller ship. Look at him and take a closer look at him and appreciate how this baby is baked and brilliantly built. This set is a dream come true for many AFOLs including mine. I've been waiting for this set for 30 years! :D

I love this set very much, I bought 4 sets (sorry people). I used 2 sets to make my ship a larger ship, with 3 masts and 4 canons, to put along the Ideas set (Is on my wanted list) and I did build the 2 other builds, in my new (temporary) saillingboat / pirate shelf with my good old "Queen Ann" ship. Love the pirate theme under your layout.

I actually much prefer the lego built sails. Paper sails and flags in sets always felt like cheating to me. Maybe they don't scale quite as well but with this small ship it is great I think.

Looking forward to building my ship now. Wife and I got two boxes so we plan to build the ship and the house. Guess we have to draw straws or flip a coin on who gets to build what... (I know we can build and rebuid, but that takes time away from other fun future builds).

Congrats for showing it next to the Barracuda Bay ship !!! I would've never contemplated buying the creator 3 in 1 pirateship...but I just bought the Barracuda Bay pirateship and this smaller creator set would just look so good on my shelving next to the Barracuda.

7:06 My guess is that the crew was way larger, but as the ship was getting closer to the port the Captain started feeling worse and worse about dividing the treasure into so many shares. I'm amazed how good of a set this ends up being with the use of more genuine building techniques. Newer pieces really help to achieve all this shaping. As for the name, I thought about borrowing from Assassin's Creed IV's Jackdaw and naming it after the bird. Although the one in the set looks like a Blue Jay, a "Red Jay" could be fitting for the ship's size and color scheme.

sounds nice, but it is not a caravel. It is technically more like a brig. So should it be Bucaneer´s Brig? :-)

I call mine the Bounty Bouncing Brig. It isn't very Lego but sounds to me very playful and fitting. Pirates have bounties, small ship is agile or bouncy and it is close to a brig.

Great review as always. Not too short and not too long. If you do get the set again for the alternate build, I will look forward to that. As for the pirate ship's name, I thought of the Alexander or Joshalex to name a few.

First of all that is the first and only large Pirate theme set and Pirate ship set too in last years, for this reason, I immediately decided to purchase it as soon as I saw it first time. And it was the first set, where my daughter 4.8 y.o. take a part in assembling: she made entire sails -) For some reason I think it should be nice investment set, what's your opinion?

What is even the point of this ship with plastic sails? I would only get it for the pirate house build but even that is not that great.

The point of Creator sets is .... to be creative. The sails being actual pieces allow you to use it in the alternate builds or use them for your own creative builds.
