At first it may seem that the Greatest Show is really returning to hunt down that one child who escaped the first time... but. With every chorus they remind you how the protagonist wakes up from a nightmare. The dark carnival is not coming back, it's just him and his demons. The experience gave him a psicological trauma that will never truly leave him alone. The first seconds sound like a broken record player, repeating a distorted version of a once cheerful melody again, again and again...

Now, it may be that it is not trauma, but in fact this fearful fair presenting it's notice. The ringmaster is not back yet, but he is coming. Just, another theory. The backwards music could also just be another homage to the book that the Greatest Show On Earth is based off of, specifically the merry-go-round that plays its calliope backwards when it spins backwards and also turns its occupants younger by a year for every backward turn

@@pandoraslick1922 the music at the beginning of the song sounds like music played in reverse, and the merry-go-round in _Something Wicked This Way Comes_ plays its music backwards when it spins the wrong way. Because the carousel ages its occupants back when it spins backwards, the song could be using this to exemplify how the boy is remembering his traumatic experience from several years ago.

I like to theorize that originally the song was about someone who barely survived "The Greatest Show Unearthed" dealing with the psychological torment of their traumatic memories of that place, finally lured in to going back in reality of their full accord, perhaps this is even how the Greatest Show Unearthed got it's employees/monsters.

I love love love this! My only critique is that I wish the song was a bit louder and more unrestrained. The vocals are fantastic but I feel like they could have gotten more chaotic, maybe to drive home the narrative that this carnival is far far darker than you could have ever imagined. The whole song just feels a little bit too polished for a circus from Hell. It's still a deliciously creepy song though!

I gotta say that after many years since the first album came out and I had got my copy I have held on to it all this time but have delved so deep into extreme metal music that the album had kinda collected some dust at the back of an ever growing collection. Anyway I recently re listened to the greatest show unearthed for some old nostalgic kicks. I feel this is less "The Greatest Show Unearthed Returns" and more "The Greatest Show Unearthed Is Returning"? It kinda sounds like an employee advertising that the circus is coming? I just don't get the carnival feeling... The original felt like something advertising the circus, and despite the crowd addressing intro this feels more like it's being directed at one person in particular. I wonder if the rest of the album follows this trend of a survivor/s of various songs. I would of loved more lyrics about people they recruited (since the origin mentioned about how they can provide anything at a price) and how better off they are. Maybe some of the attractions they escaped from that're returning that caused heavy casualties (playing on the whole blood on the concrete part of the original)?
