Reminds me of the old "Rambo" movies where Rambo never runs out of ammunition, those troopers with a machine gun with a never ending supply of ammo, bit far fetched. Bring on the flame throwing Beetle's, my favourites in that series. Love it when the cameraman got his towards the end...

Still to this day I can’t understand how they have interstellar travel and show up to fight with machine guns.

They underestimated the bugs. Full auto .308 isn't very effective against those warrior bugs, you could blow off a limb and they can still fight with 86% combat effectiveness. They're over 16 feet long and nearly 10 feet tall for crying out loud. I'd feel more confident with a 12 gauge shotgun using 3 inch 000 buckshot and 3 inch 1 Oz. slugs than those rifles.

Fair enough, Out of the limited times the shotgun is used in the film they seem a hell of alot more useful/effective than the standard firing mode

wouldn't be more reasonable if they airstike first before sending ground units!? surprisingly they have spacecrafts but no armor vehicle

They actually did just that in their next try during the movie. They mention that as being part of their strategy. But it's something they could have done since the beginning. I guess it's one of those things that are done to make the film more dramatic.
